Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2020-06-01 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by wmoses. In attendance were Student keyholders: wmoses, jnoguera, asahteck, bds, mrittenb, emmabat | kjchen, dbopp Associate keyholders: alvareza, npfoss, quentin, jwd3, kenta, wqian94 Members: agrebe, rdedhia, cmclcas, kcy Guests: '() Administrivia: emmabat: I was on a committee on a new campus learning platform, there will now be a campus wide one. Online learning platforms have become very important. The UA has asked me to help them pick someone, preferably from SIPB, to be the undergrad representative on the committee. Institute committees are actually fairly influential, it's a great opportunity if you are interested. Let me know. wmoses: Usually the committees are mostly faculty and a few undergrads or grads. wqian94: I was on the curriculum committee, new majors, course 6 changes, whether to approve 8-flex, things like that. emmabat: Not super high time commitment, it was a one hour meeting every two weeks when I was on it. wqian94: I highly recommend it, most schools don't even pretend to care about student input, MIT actually tries to take it into account. emmabat; One of the people on the ad-hoc committee wanted a SIPB person. emmabat: Reach out to me, if no one does I'll start asking people. wmoses: We managed to get a pro-card and activate it. If we need to buy things, we can do it with an MIT credit card. emmabat: SIPB has been trying to get one for years. mcyoung: People like to say I'm like a five-year old with a credit card, but that's nothing compared to Billy with a pro-card. wqian94: Teenagers can get soda. emmabat: No soda, at worst low fat chocolate milk. wqian94: How schools have changed. quentin: Do schools no longer have soda machines? emmabat: Mine did. wmoses: Mine did. asahteck: We ordered SIPB shirts for all the students who requested them. If you're an alum we sent out the form. wmoses: Most of the other things that were on the budget have been purchased. We have a little more money to get hard drives, talk to me if you have thoughts. The machine we'll build was less expensive than allocated, we have around $700 left. wqian94: I recommend $750 worth of confetti. quentin: $750 of surgical masks? wqian94: So, half a surgical mask. emmabat: SIPB probably shouldn't be buying them since we don't have a pressing need. wmoses: I see badges could use a smaller button machine? kenta: The ASA sent around its round of derecognition threats. wqian94: You mean the anti-hazing stuff? wmoses: SIPB did the form and had five students, and did not receive any emails. wqian94: Since some of the projects that need to be cooperative need to be pushed off farther, what's the plan for projects run by people who are graduating? Are there plans for if a project can't be worked on for the next few months? wmoses: Right now we're trying to work on the various projects to figure out what they need, where they are at. WISP can do some stuff but of course can't deploy on buildings. Project Reports: wmoses: I made a JupyterHub instance with SIPB's AWS credits, we can set up MIT authentication. If you're interested in this, talk to me. rihn: SIPB badges continues. asahteck: Tech panel did a tour thingy that wasn't terrible. Also, there's a confusingly translated article about Minecraft that was funny. Did someone put this through a word blender? emmabat: Looks like someone who doesn't speak English - it changed green building to inexperienced construction. Even google translate is not that bad. angel: My favorite part was the mangled direct quote from Billy. wmoses: It is true, I can't speak English. jwd3: I want to thank you for the presentation, I thought it went very well. [asahteck and emmabat read quotes from article] emmabat: We're joyful to supply supplies. cmclcas: I understand all the words individually, but not in context. wqian94: It was really cool watching commencement, especially at the start when there was a cutscene going from minecraft mit to the other virtual mit. asahteck: I'm just glad the scale all worked out. Other: wqian94: MIT's nano people did a second round of nano-themed things, I am now somewhere on vasser street. kcy: Did the toaster plates get ordered? wmoses: Yes. emmabat: The most important part of our budget. wmoses: The toaster service is important. wmoses: MIT apparently has a giant supercomputer opening soon. quentin: Commencement happened, congrats if any of you got to not walk. wqian94: Congrats to 2020, welcome to the group of people who will get solicitations from the MIT alumni club. alvareza: I am now cruft. emmabat: I've avoided becoming cruft by getting accepted to a phd program. kjchen: I feel bad for the class of '70, imagine getting kicked off campus, then your reunion is also bad. emmabat: We could be so lucky! kjchen: Probably global warming, MIT will be underwater. Other Other: dbopp: I recommend against buying a house. The washing machine empties into the sink, a rag plugged up the sink. wqian94: Where did you buy a house? dbopp: Long story, my home town. wmoses: I second not living in a house, the air conditioner broke. emmabat: If ours breaks, the landlord has to fix it. asahteck: I've never operated a dishwasher. mcyoung: We use a dishwasher and handwash everything. wqian94: If you want to see something sad, lots of emails going around. quenitn: If you want to stay sane, don't pay attention. emmabat: But you also can't just ignore it. quentin: I hope everyone stays safe. wqian94: Also Hong Kong is becoming part of China. wqian94: SpaceX docked at the ISS the other day. Weather delayed the launch. quentin: Amazing, first time in nine years an American spacecraft with humans has gone to space. wmosess: spacex suits looked sci-fi. quentin: Not space suits, pressure suits, they are not designed to be operated in space.
