Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2021-03-22 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kjchen. In attendance were Student keyholders: kjchen, asahteck, bds, wmoses, jeffery, jnwagner, maximo, huydai Associate keyholders: quentin Members: mitimmy | amigdal Guests: cjq Administrivia: kjchen: Recently there has been a lot of anti-Asian racism and hatred recently. If you ever need someone to talk about it, my DM is always open. I just want to be sure that anyone who have someone that they come to talk to about this. kjchen: We recently submitted proposals for CP* events (Quantum Computer Cluedump, Game Night, Project Fair, SIPB Server Room Tour). I'll send out the times out when they are officially approved. We also need people to staff the Activity Midway on Saturday, April 17th, from 1-3 PM EST and the Project Fair on the same day 5-7 PM EST. Both of these events would be a great avenue to reach out to pre-frosh and get them to join SIPB. I've already reached out a few specific groups people for the Project Fair, but if you want to come and talk about what you are working feel free to let me know. jnwagner: I think out of al the events Game Night has not had a proposal, though I can get on submitting that for tonight. The deadline for events is tonight so if anyone wants to add an event that is still a thing that you can do. (Note: The official deadline was 5PM but SIPB does have some leeway on the time) Project Reports: wmoses: The great CP* Discord continues. Various memes are in progress. You should feel free to join (either through the mailing list or other bits). There's some some cool stuff going behind the scene that for the sake of #surprise I won't go into more depth for now. asahteck: The SIPB Minecraft-athon had a meeting last night with one person in attendance: me. I was able to get work done with graphic designer for swags and things, but I'll also need some help with website design and publicity. I swear it's not a 24hr commitment; we'll only need a couple of people who can push the project in the right direction and help us keep track of things. I'm just one person doing many things. Other: kjchen: I'm working with some people in UA to push an initiative for more grade transparency (Link: tiny.cc/mitgrades). Right now we're circulating a petition. If you guys are interested, take a look and help us sign the petition. We're hoping to get widespread undergrad support so that the faculty would take notice and be aware that this is something that the student body wants. wmoses: Would it help if we widely-spread among grad students and TAs? kjchen: I see no harm in doing that. If you would like to do so, I think it would be really appreciated. Thanks Billy. wmoses: There is this event happening this summer called Google Summer of Code. Google will literally pay you money to work on open-source software of your choosing (from a number of different categories). I would recommend, because free money + help making open-software better, what is there to lose? Other Other: wmoses: (*tells a very interesting story*) ..The moral of the story is: Don't listen to spam callers and download random software they tell you over the phone. asahteck: Happy long weekend to all the undergrad students. It just feel a day that I can skip lectures and do work and that's it. kjchen: I feel long weekends aren't about doing less work, but just having more freedom and time to divide up the work you would normally do. wmoses: Accurate. asahteck: I recently received a mermaid tail that I ordered in the mail. I wonder how MIT staff would feel if I one day just go to the Z-center pool with these on. Will I be the reason MIT has a no-mermaid policy? The meeting was adjourned at 19:38. Minutes taken and submitted by huydai.
