Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2021-09-27 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kjchen. In attendance were Student keyholders: kjchen, bds, cela, petey, jnwagner, lkdc, huydai Associate keyholders: '() Members: leoy, agrebe, haoxuanl, toomas, jesp1999, rgabriel, athenaw, manaal, jmvidal, tiwa, javsolis, mitimmy Guests: robertvc, kondrich, tiwa Administrivia: kjchen: I would just re-iterate "what is a SIPB meeting" that was mentioned last meeting. SIPB meetings are a time for SIPB members to check-in and hang out and check-in with others. I'm the Chair, my name is Kelly. We have Administrivia - time for office-related things and mentions for funding allocations & nominations for keyholdership. The second section is Project reports, which is .. reports for projects. Other is the misc. section that mentions things that are directly-relevant for SIPB, and finally Other Other is a truly miscellanous category (usually we get pretty interesting/weird things in there). kjchen: Last week Cel mentioned a gray area in our office policy. To clarify, right now the SIPB office is open, and can be opened by anyone who's a keyholder (and has a key to the SIPB office). Anyone can come in to work whenever the office door is opened. I will send out an e-mail about eating out in the office. From what I've discussed in the EC, we agreed that it would be okay for people to eat small snacks in the office but no big meals. cela: HWOPS is the project that operates the server room that SIPB has in W20. We collected a list of items in the junk pile and sent out a document to the SIPB mailing list to make sure that we weren't throwing away important things. Turns out some things indeed were of historical significance and had to be preserved. If you are interested in hardware or other fun supplies, make sure to take a look at the list! You can also claim a lot of items on there (besides some of the hard drives). There was a work session to look over the current UPSes in the SMR and check on their status & see whether they are useful. We had 6 devices that we initially identified to be potentially working UPSes but turns out were not UPSes (they were transformers!). It is likely that in the future we will need to buy more UPSes in the office. If you have input on what we should buy for UPSes or are interested in Hardware Operations, you should come to our meetings on Fridays at 5 PM. bds: For anyone new you can find the SIPB Google calendar for weekly project meetings times you can find the calendar along with the Mattermost link on sipb.mit.edu! *clarification question about Mattermost* kjchen: *Kelly re-explains some of the meeting procedures for new people who had walked up* Project Reports: cela: The Graduate Student Union is happening sooner than you think! I encouraged anyone who is a grad student to consider signing a union card. kjchen: Indeed it was 5 PM More information at mitgsu.org bds: There is also hardware in the SIPB office that is up for grabs for everyone. petey (an admin at the MIT Admissions office). I have no idea what is in it, since I haven't looked inside and they are amongst the boxes in the back which are not labeled (though that can be fixed). cela: Yes please label them so people don't accidentally come out with things that are important to the office petey: *in chat* Hello someone called my name. If anyone finds something interesting in those drives, let me know! rgabriel: I would like to know who's working on the Uplink project. I would like to help. jmvidal: We haven't scheduled a meeting time yet, but I can announce it in the chat. cela: What's the Uplink project? jmvidal: For the Uplink project, we are making an easy to use chat that is associated with a mailing list and that can be easily added to a chat platform like Mattermost. petey: I have a question. Has anyone tried using the new VPN service to go into Athena from off-campus? It seemed to be very slow. agrebe: I have, I think, but not recently. *people mentioned that they have gotten it to work but unsure about performance* leoy: The antenna service is still not working in Stata. huydai: Still?? It's been almost two weeks now kjchen: Also it seems like that a good number of people have been coming for the in-person meeting. I think it would be fair for us to move back inside [for future meetings]. I can send out a consensus e-mail to the normal SIPB mailing list (and also the prospective interest SIPB mailing list as well). If anyone wants to know what the SIPB office looks like, you can go the 5th floor of the Student Center and look for the office with a whiteboard that has a drawing of a fuzzball and titled "SIPB!" There's also a stapler (which has historically been one of our most important projects) that you can feel free to use. leoy: Doesn't the Athena lounge next door to the SIPB office cjq: Yes, but that stapler breaks all the time. SIPB's stapler, however, is always reliable. cjq: Does anyone know who's the lead for SIPB Docs? (Documentation) bds: I think that was me at somepoint. cjq: Well I've just been writing documentation for Athena and AFS, and so I'm looking for people to help on this and also ways to make it more easily accessible by SIPB members. If anyone is interested, talk to me! Other: '() Other Other: leoy: I saw the sign today that says "The sink is out of service because ... it is running. It is expected to be operational ASAP, dated 3 days ago." There have also been other similar writings in other places like stairs with an even older date. cela: There are crickets! *crickets chirping* leoy: We have passed the Autumn Equinox. The amount of day is now less than 12 hours, and so we are being plunged into darkness. *discussion of 2nd-derivatives and sinusoidal relationship of day/night cycles and how it changes relative to longitude* cjq: Can we rename ourselves to be the "Antique Student Integral Processing Group" leoy: There's fewer bugs at the meeting today, so that's good. robertvc: As someone who's for environmentalism, I have to oppose. kjchen: If you are new to the meeting minutes, or have been added as a member to SIPB (e.g. being added to our mailing list and being sent welcome e-mail), just come to the keyholders here *raises hands* and we can induct you in the cult of the fuzzballs. leoy: For how long has the ATM in the Student Center been out of service? cjq: For like a year. agrebe: It must have been at least a couple of months ago based on my observation. The meeting was adjourned at 19:55. Minutes taken and submitted by huydai.
