Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2022-04-11 The meeting was called to order at 19:35 by jmvidal. In attendance were Student keyholders: bds, cela, cjq, gshay, huydai, jmvidal, kjchen, mitimmy Associate keyholders: amigdal Members: ashay, markchil, toomas Guests: chrswang Administrivia: huydai: last week i sent out an email about the new office policy. we increased the capacity to 25 instead of 10. we'll revise this policy at end-of-month; hopefully things will be better. it's posted on the door now. Project Reports: cjq: sipbw was a success! do people wanna talk about the events they ran? bds: we indeed toured the server room three times with two large groups and one small group of prefrosh who were very interested in all the objects in the server room. jmvidal: including the applesauce. toomas: applesauce, what? bds: there's a decades-old jar of applesauce in the smr. huydai: i used to think it was a small jar in a glass box, but it's a giant jar on a shelf. mitimmy: trivia night was pretty succesful. no huge point differences, three teams of four to five people. we didn't through all the questions, many people wanted to go to tours at ten, but overall pretty successful. cjq: midway happened. we had fifty prefrosh list their kerbs as interested in getting emails from us so i think that was pretty succesful. toomas: the sipb computer panel! a whole bunch of members showed up and a few prefrosh as well. it was mainly cel talking about the machine room and how the organization works, and a demo of max. huydai: sipb party went pretty well, we ordered ten pizzas, fifteen prefrosh came. across the events a good amount of prefrosh came back repeatedly, so that's a good sign! we also finished building a pc in the back and fixed the cables. cjq: sipbw report over. cela: hwops continues! we have successfully consolidated some things that were in different racks around the room. we made space for tours and did other rearrangements for one of the new racks we're using, where we're putting in the new ups. bds: update hot off the presses, i was just doing homework, the guy from maintenance we told to move one of the server racks showed up completely unplanned, and said "hey do you need to move a server rack?" that server rack is out of the smr now. cela: awesome. huydai: what happens if we need the server rack again? bds: we don't, we have infinitely many server racks more suited than that sad old rack. chrswang: who works on courseroad? gshay: courseroad is not currently meeting, but we have some tasks for this semester. we have a mattermost channel where we talk about development stuff on courseroad, but you don't need any experience with webdev. i would join the mattermost, and if you don't know where that is, i'm sure someone can help you find it. it's also on the sipb website. Other: '() Other Other: bds: we need names for two new computers in the office. the one currently running the zoom meeting is an apple m1 mac, and the other pc we built is an amalgamation. i only have a suggestion for the mac, is that i think we should call it leg, because it runs an arm processor. cela: i recommend a two-word name, so it's less likely to be a collision. bds: arm-and-leg? jmvidal: hypotenuse or something? bds: we'll have to workshop this a bit more. markchil (chat): "The only two hard things in computer science are naming things and cache invalidation." huydai: ec has seen an uptick in the number of cases. the floor above us, 25% of their hall tested positive last week. toomas: which floor do you live on? huydai: tetazoo. this is a bit of a worrying thing. even the ec house manager asked us what we should do. toomas: ours is also experiencing an uptick. jmvidal: there's a recent update saying please do not test poorly, because of the risk of false negatives. chrswang: hello, is this the sipb office? jmvidal: a frat wasn't doing testing correctly, and they kept getting false negatives. cela: this is a good week to test for covid, because there's a much higher chance than previous weeks that you've caught covid! chrswang: what is everyone's names? it's my first meeting here. [people introduce themselves.] huydai: you live in like, simmons or something? yeah thanks for coming. [people struggle to pronounce toomas's name.] huydai: one interesting thing about the sipb website is that we have so many links. chrswang: the website does look a little old. toomas: if it hasn't been updated since the early 2000s, then it hasn't been updated for 20 years. cela: this would be a great time to update it! if we want to recruit new people, especially. the secretary can delegate this to someone who has time, or can do it themselves. cjq: i can indeed delegate it. bds: is that a threat? huydai: i don't think getting it done now, but get a few people together for that? bds: it'd probably be best to have our own thing separate from any other infrastructure. cela: probably good to understand what the current website does before we scrap it entirely. we know how to host it -- we just need to figure out what text and layout we want. cjq: as the secretary i will be recording grievances for the website. toomas: things are hard to find. cjq: your grievances have been recorded. toomas: i knew we have a mattermost, i never use it, had to go look for it again. cjq: you can get a mattermost app so you get notifications on your phone. cela: i heard bitcoin's crashing again. clap to make bitcoin die faster! [everyone applauds.] bds: cryptocurrency dying means cheaper gpus! The meeting was adjourned at 19:54. Minutes taken and submitted by cjq.
