Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2022-05-02 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by jmvidal. In attendance were Student keyholders: cjq, jeffery, jmvidal, jnwagner, kjchen Associate keyholders: '() Members: agrebe, ashay, javsolis, parulsin, ryang2 Guests: '() Administrivia: cjq: what happened with the is&t meeting? jmvidal: inconclusive at this point. we'll talk more about it at an ec meeting and then disperse that information as we find it. Project Reports: ryang2: hyades continues. there has been no progress since last week. markchil: projects database continues! lots of progress on the backend since last week. hoping to get news from is&t to get moira access to scripts soon, because that'll be a bottleneck. if that falls through we can find an alternate solution. jmvidal: hwops continues. last week we had a work party and we removed a bunch of wires nested inside a server rack so we can put the racks in the new position we had planned. we started removing hard drives from servers. agrebe: working on getting the videos from iap uploaded to some sipb youtube account that still needs to be created and working on subtitling them. ashay: what's happening with wisp? jmvidal: proposal is finished, they're resubmitting. there was a stopping period when is&t said they were busy or something because of the pandemic. ashay: i thought it went to city of cambridge? Other: jmvidal: my laptop is at 63%. agrebe: covid cases are rising on campus and admin is now recommending high-quality masks on-campus. ryang2: have people tried the new fancy vending machines? javsolis: i got masks and ethernet cables. agrebe: aren't there also adapters? javsolis: those are for professors and tas. ryang2: assuming it's all free? javsolis: yeah. jmvidal: i got one mask and i wasn't sure it was free or not. like did they charge my techcash or? jeffery: it seems unclear where they would get information about who's a ta and who's not. ashay: wait isn't that super easy? that list exists yeah? ryang2: i'm sure it exists. agrebe: i'm pretty sure it exists for grad tas because it determines funding. and also ipad eligibility. jeffery: i'm basing this off one of my friends who's an undergrad ta but wasn't able to get the adapters in the machine. ryang2: i was unaware that mit did wastewater testing. they spoke about that in the email. agrebe: did they said they did wastewater testing or boston? i thought it was boston. parulsin: there's actually a startup that does that with the water… i'm not sure if mit does it on its water system or if it's cambridge more broadly. agrebe: biobot? they have freely available data on the amount of covid in the wastewater in the greater boston area dating back to two years ago. Other Other: javsolis: finals are sooner than you think. ashay: is the school year ending early? agrebe: i think it's we started early last year. can't remember pre-covid. ryang2: we started last day of january so. cjq: [talks about faculty regulations and why that means it's the same length always] Keyholdership Election for agrebe, ashay, javsolis: cjq: do we have quorum? quorum is seven student keyholders. we have four. jmvidal: i got one absentee ballot. cjq: that still leaves us down by two. kjchen, in chat: in the case of lack of quorum extended secretary halts can be called while keyholders attempt to get other keyholders to join [extended sechalt to get quorum] jmvidal: i vaguely remember how this goes. so will those being elected please step to the front of the room. agrebe: which direction is the front? jmvidal: wherever you decide. ashay: well the front is over there… but maybe the front is over here. agrebe: the camera should see us? jmvidal: now. questions. yes? parulsin: what are your names again? [people say their names] javsolis: i'm javier and i'm a 24. agrebe: i'm a sixth-year phd graduating in august. ashay: i'm a '21 and an meng now. parulsin: what are you working on for your phd? agrebe: says physics stuff parulsin: i major in 6-3, and i'm a junior. jmvidal: please your close eyes. picture the ceiling while closing your eyes. javsolis: wait actually? cjq: yes. jmvidal: without repetition name as many things hanging from the ceiling as you can. javsolis: a cable. a poster maybe? lights. agrebe: shark coming out of a banana peel. nyan cat. a gavel. mystery cube from mario. write-protect rings for magnetic reels. ashay: electronics board. some cube of dollar bills. cjq: what color is the carpet of the room? agrebe: is it not maroon? ashay: without even thinking about it i'd say maroon. javsolis: yeah, reddish. agrebe: i'd guess brown but i am color blind. cjq: apparently the correct answer to this quesiton is they are all correct because no one knows the color of the carpet. you can open your eyes now btw. jmvidal: this may be out of order but please state your name and the work you have done for sipb. agrebe: i'm anthony. i've been one of the coteachers of the command line fundamentals course over iap. i helped organized a cluedump with mark last fall. i'm not convinced myself this is sufficient to warrant keyholdership but i will leave that to you guys to make the decision. ashay: my name is ashay. i helped publicize iap classes and record them. i worked with cbsu to make materials for the machine learning class and teach that. i also helped out with the wisp project that's still going. javsolis: i'm javier. i helped with anthony with the command line fundamentals course over iap. before that i did hardware operations, and right now i'm sorta working on projects database. jmvidal: i will now open the floor to questions. cjq: what do we do in the event of a fire in the sipb office? agrebe: we open the open in case of fire box, and take the contents out and leave the buildings with the contents. parulsin: what are the contents? ashay: there's three frisbees. parulsin: i thought the answer in the event of fire is that we exit. but there are things that should be saved? agrebe: there are also crypto keys in addition to frisbees. ashay: if we need to take things out really quickly we can take the keys and toss them on frisbees. jmvidal: one of them is open, why? agrebe: that's the one that says open in event of cryptographic emergency? do you know more details? jmvidal: no. does anyone know more details? ashay: i still don't understand all the other stuff in that drawer. that drawer is like five feet deep. kjchen: close your eyes. now open your eyes. please take turns identifying as many unique fuzzballs in the office as possible. ashay: wait what's a fuzzball? agrebe: that is one fuzzball. i went first. ashay: so not the plushie. just balls of fuzz. cause that's not a plushie. jmvidal: any fuzzball counts, including fuzzballs on stickers. ashay: there's a brown fuzzball on the corner of that ledge. agrebe: that's a fuzzball with eyes and legs. javsolis: there's some on the clock? agrebe: there's the one on the door. javsolis: there's the one on the computer. agrebe: *lifts kerberos plushie* that is not a fuzzball. ashay: there's the yellow one next to the thing there, i don't know if that's named already. agrebe: there's a whole cup of them. ashay: i have a weird urge to place a fuzzball at the twelve, three, six and nine markings of that clock. agrebe: there's a fuzzball on the poster on duolith. ashay: there's one. it has eyes. jmvidal: what is your favorite picture on the wall of pictures and/or posters? ashay: pikachu and kirby. agrebe: i'm gonna go with root loops. javsolis: rm is forever. ashay: is kirby hugging pikachu or eating pikachu? jmvidal: it looks like pikachu is eating kirby. kjchen: what should you do if the fbi visits the sipb office? agrebe: ask to see a lawyer. ashay: ask for a warrant. javsolis: close the door. ashay: make sure the door is locked. cjq: okay so the thing you are supposed to do is to call the chair. ryang2: is there a particular reason? cjq: yes. [there's a story about this.] agrebe: there was someone from secret service who tried to arrest someone in mit years ago. they tried to download jstor. parulsin: what's jstor? agrebe: [explains.] cjq: we now need to find a book. jmvidal: are we booking already? what happens if a computer becomes sentient? javsolis: call the chair. ashay: based on the logs concert, sing out of tune and the ai will go offline. agrebe: we have a poster of what to do when there's rogue ai, know your paradoxes. jmvidal: i believe that's the correct answer. agrebe: i would also call a philosopher too. jmvidal: list as many kerberoi as you remember from a to z. agrebe: agrebe. ryang2: can't you just say a name? jeffery: it has to be from sipb members. agrebe: bds. ashay: cela or cjq. agrebe: was davidben a sipb member? cjq: are you thinking of danny? agrebe: i'm thinking of david benjamin. cjq: not sure. agrebe: emmabat! ashay: is there one for every letter? cjq: okay let's skip letters just starting naming kerbs. ashay: gshay. javsolis: huydai. ashay: jmvidal. javsolis: javsolis. agrebe: kjchen. mitimmy. ashay: wmoses. cjq: among the people who attended in the last month there hasn't been an m and an o. ashay: is there a p? cjq: there's one in this room right now! javsolis: parul? parulsin: yeah. agrebe: q is quentin. cjq: *gestures at ryang2* agrebe: what's your kerb? ryang2: ryang2. cjq: t is for toomas. jmvidal: what is this? *holds up the ctrl alt deleter* agrebe: a ctrl alt deleter. ryang2: what?! jmvidal: would you like to? agrebe: *demonstrates* we can do it one-handed. jmvidal: very important to do it one-handed and at a distance. jmvidal: would you rather be attacked by one server-sized raspberry pi or one hundred pi-sized servers? ashay: attacked in a computational or physical sense? jmvidal: both. ashay: i'll go against the big raspberry pi computationally, because it doesn't have lots of compute if it's big. but physically less volume. agrebe: that makes sense. javsolis: i agree. jnwagner: what does sipb stand for? agrebe, ashay, javsolis: student information processing board. cjq: no! agrebe: what else would it stand for? jmvidal: do we have any alternatives? agrebe: system intelligence… javsolis: …deep learning… ashay: silly interesting pea brains. which is actually kinda what the logo looks like. jnwagner: if sipb acquired an aircraft carrier, how should we name that aircraft carrier? agrebe: boaty mcboatface. cjq: how would sipb acquire an aircraft carrier? ryang2: mit has connections to the government. javsolis: ask the federal government very politely. jmvidal: yeah we lost our last one. what would we do with said aircraft carrier other than carrying aircraft? agrebe: the professor i ta'd for had the idea of taking a barge and putting sails on it and having it sail around the ocean and generate electricity and put a supercomputer on it and there's a lot of wind in the ocean. so a wind-powered floating supercomputer. javsolis: wait what was the question ashay: once you have one aircraft carrier it's easier to get another one because you can land in a military airport. so we could acquire more and more aircraft carriers. and then we can ask people what they do with multiple aircraft carriers. jeffery: what is something you like and something you want to change or improve in sipb? ashay: do those two things have to be related? cjq: not really. agrebe: like: i think the people are very friendly. welcoming community. to improve: when i first came to sipb i asked people what sipb do and got the answer sipb does computer projects. i guess the projects database is fixing this project to have a better answer than the one i felt like i first got. javsolis: most members have a good sense of humor as this meeting has shown. to improve, probably fixing the door server. ryang2: i thought that was fixed? cjq: it was. javsolis: i dunno. uh. organizing the room. cjq: would you organize the room? javsolis: i would if people helped me. ashay: i would also be down to help organize the room. i think i've known lots of sipb members since frosh year and i dunno. i'm still really interested in seeing how to get more people to know what goes on with sipb. i think the projects database will help. but there's a lot to do there, lots of people share the culture we have here. and there's still more that can be done there. ryang2: has sipb ever dormspammed? cjq: we dormspammed for iap events and cluedumps. agrebe: i remember having to learn how to dormspam for a sipb event. did we dormspam for cpw? cjq: no. jmvidal: are there any more questions? cjq: we need to do the book. jmvidal: grab your favorite book from that shelf. agrebe: *selects project athena technical plan* ashay: *selects artificial intelligence a modern approach* javsolis: *selects linux kernel development* cjq: please place your hand on the book. jmvidal: do you swear to answer this next question truthfully? agrebe, ashay, javsolis: yes. jmvidal: are you or, or have you ever been, students for a democratic society? agrebe, ashay, javsolis: no. cjq: you can put your hands down. agrebe: and now we no longer have to answer truthfully right? cjq: [tells story] cjq: it is now time for the most interesting keyholder to ask a question. unfortunately we did not agree on the most interesting keyholder beforehand. jmvidal: is anyone feeling interesting today? cjq: i nominate jeffery. jeffery: am i asking the question? cjq: yes. jeffery: why do you want to be a sipb keyholder? ashay: i wanna keep doing cool sipb things and being part of the community. planning to do that for a while. i guess keyholdership is just a thing on the side which might make some things easier. i'll come into this office more. it'll be cool to be in the office more. agrebe: i would say the biggest effect of being a keyholder is that i'm going to be kicked out of this school and i would like to keep my athena account when i graduate? i think most of the other things are kind of independent of whether i'm a keyholder… i can come to meetings, hang out with you guys, do projects regardless of whether i have the physical key or not. javsolis: it's nice to come when the doors closed because you can open it. and you can invite other sipb members to come in. ashay: keyholdership represents commitment to the club. voting rights, other things. in part of wanting to be more part of the club. agrebe: i would want to see if it's possible to boot up those athena stations and keyholders get root? cjq: yeah, we tell you the root password. jmvidal: any more questions? with the candidates and non-keyholders please leave the room for voting. cjq: oh okay. it'll be fast we promise. *closed door meeting* *results of election for agrebe: 7 yes, 0 no, 0 abstain* *results of election for ashay: 7 yes, 0 no, 0 abstain* *results of election for javsolis: 7 yes, 0 no, 0 abstain* The meeting was adjourned at 20:44. Minutes taken and submitted by cjq.
