Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 24 August 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:34 by Jay C. Pattin. In attendance were Barmar, GMP, Naha, RK, RLL, CAH, JSL, DMK, and a user. Late were: LRH, c/, DCP, J9, tzs, Alan, WOS The minutes of the meeting of 17 August 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. LRH came in during this. Treasurer's Report: Multics total: $2631.73 month to date, $6433.99 year to date (approximately how much we spent last year in July). We asked CAH how to find out how much we've spent on the 370. It is weird. c/, DCP came in during this. The IAP project got deleted last week. Bobby has promised not to give the name to anyone else. J9 came in during this. Al Toussaint is interested in becoming a member, and is here participating. TZS came in during this. Chairman's Report: The chairman is not here. There will be frosh running around here next week. Jay got a beeper today, since he is the apprentice Schiller during R/O week. Alan came in during this. The SIPB introduced itself to Al Toussaint (to practice for the many freshpeople who will be floating around). *** User Interrupt *** Mike Schlein - $60 - to finish a paper that he will present before the Democratic National Party et al. Given. Dan Hellman for Epsilon Theta - to use APL database programs during rush week. Wants $150. Moved to reject, on the grounds that they probably should be funding it. Motion rejected. Motion to give, on the grounds that it is new software that needs a chance to run. Given. Stewart Vile - $50 for text editing for a Harvard course that he didn't finish last term. He was cross-registered, so it is for MIT credit. Given. *** End User Interrupt *** Office Report: There was a letter delivered today addressed c/o LRH. It was really for the SIPB. It was a job description. RLL still hasn't looked into the loss of the stuff in the darkroom. Alan believes that in moving stuff there we knew that it was risky, and didn't care if it got lost. We should arrange for 39-530 for next week's meeting because of all the frosh. Jay will arrange. Jay will also arrange for 39-530 for after the Computer tour. HGA will order spinwriter ribbons. Computer Services: Jay got run over by a Xerox 9700 last week, i.e. the 9700 has arrived in Dispatch, and it still doesn't run. There will be software development taking place in the near future. The weekly blew up this week because the IAP project was gone. In order to print things with many escape sequences, use the paper_info command to tell it that the paper is wider than it is. The documentation will be updated to explain. We might want to get rid of the spinwriter when the 9700 is running. There is currently a bug in spell, causing it to think that most words are spelled correctly, or take weird faults. JSL is fixing it and adding lots of bells and whistles. He may get it into the IML. Multics is off the ARPAnet. CAH and DCP are working on a new graphics interface. Telecommunication Report: The LA120 is broken. RLL will call them to straighten out the Service Contract number confusion. CAH has written a letter to MacGregor about the dataset. It will be mailed. Call in the VT100's in the Student Center and the office about replacing the video. RLL should add a baud switch for the other terminal in the Student Center. Next House still doesn't have phones. Publications Report: The runoff wallcharts were picked up today. We may need more than the 100 we got. Are we going to need Lisp Notes for 6.030? barmar will check. We should get many more NUMs, NETs, etc. to accomodate the zillions of frosh. R/O Report: GMP has arranged for the tour to go through bldg. 39. He wants someone to conduct the second floor tour. CAH will. GMP will be on the 3rd floor. DCP is arranged for the tour through the Electronic Music Studio. JCF was ready for us ahead of time. Alan has been working on the blurb. People should get corrections to him. The tour will be on Tuesday, 8 September 1981 (the day after Labor Day and before Registration Day). When DCP talks to JCF, he should try to convince them to do a flashy demo like most of the other sites. They are usually very boring. Naha is getting in touch with CIPG. He is trying to find someone who can do a good demo. Someone should arrange refreshments for after the tour. TZS will do so. We need to work on the Activities Midway. We also need a poster announcing the tour. We also should get a listing in the Daily Cnofusoin for the tour. We have enough Vadics for the Midway. Other: TZS has been nominated for membership in the Student Information Processing Board. It was noted that she is a student and is on the Dean's list. WOS came in during this. CAH would like to have an EC meeting in order to arrange a better member nomination procedure. Noone else seems to be interested. He will try to talk to EC members after the meeting about it. Should we reschedule the Labor Day meeting in order to see "Dark Star"? We will not, in order not to confuse the frosh. There is a Gilman & Rose APL book here again. The Office Manual is in a pretty good state, and prospective members are reminded to read it. Applications: Total appropriations: $890 without Coop Autoed: Student: $630 370: $0 To Meeting: $260, EC: $0, all Student. Coop: $300 Other Other: There is an article in this month's OMNI about the AI Jargon file. The Concourse computer has a new display hack, thanks to DCP. He also had to rewrite their line drawing routine in the process. There is a new puzzle in the office, called Wippet. J9 and ACW are having a housewarming party Saturday after Labor Day. DMK noticed a piece of junk mail addressed to 54 (Kleban) in the Bexley office. We also got something addressed to LAL today. KYM lost a minicube in the office. There is a new Harvard Square theatre schedule in the office. The meeting was adjourned at 21:09. Minutes taken and submitted by Barry Margolin.
