Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 8 June 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:38 by William M. York. In attendance were GMP, Barmar, RK, RLL, NAHA, WMY, DCP, CWH, JAY, c/, Alan, SAS, OTA, RDM, DMK. Late were: JSL, KYM, JCG The minutes of the meeting of 1 June 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. JSL came in after this. SAS and OTA were introduced to the board. Treasurer's Report: We have spent $112,539.97 so far this year (including 370). This means we should spend about $115,000 this year. People should pay their SIPB bills. Several people owe more than $100. There was a discussion about whether people borrowing money from the cashbox is acceptable. We will keep on doing it, but people should take it more seriously. There is a check from someone named Chang in the cashbox. Does anyone know what it's from? Noone seems to know. There are still $14 in unclaimed phone calls. Chairman's Report: There is a chairman, but he is boring. The chairman sent mail to Corbato' complaining about the new shift 3 rates. The new budget is official: $110K for computer services and $20K for hardware. Office Report: There is a new book signout list. People should turn the lights out when you leave. It's easy now that the lights are near the door. RK will go crazy if we don't get a cover for the SpinWriter. CWH suggests that we put it in the darkroom, but it was explained that this is not feasible. RK moved that we spend up to $400 on a soundguard for it. RLL amended that we wait until July. We should demo it first. JSL mentioned that the IBM6670 might take some of our usage away, but it looks like it may not, as we have some features it doesn't. RK's motion passed. Sign up for office hours! Even if you have to quit to fit the 3-5 hour into your schedule. There ARE SIPB envelopes. Most are in a box on the file cabinets, some are in a drawer. Computer Services: JIS' priorities have switched to getting Multics onto the Chaosnet? By Friday, the 355 (the old FNP) will be gone. KYM told the secretary that she wasn't there. We never set up any arrangements for paying students' way through the Summer IPS courses. The center installed a subroutine called "user" in the AML this week, but it conflicted with the installed command "user". A fictitious userid "User" was registered, but it will be flushed. Telecommunication Report: We have $20K to spend next year; what will we spend it on? There will be a Teleommunications Subcommittee meeting at 19:30 on Wednesday, 10 June 1981. Publications Report: We should buy the new IBM VM/SP manuals, which would replace most of the old manuals we have. Approved. They will be gotten after July 1. Dorothy Corbett took many of our blue-cards to give out. There was discussion about the concept of the SIPB buying NBDD storage to sell. There has been a new Form B on the board for a while. Comment. Should we produce the new runoff wall-chart that WER designed? First, JSL will make one modification and post a copy on the board. Annual-Report Report: Many laughs. R/O Report: We have to set up the freshman letter. The deadline is in two weeks. Other: Applications: Do the applications in Limbo don't need to be read at this meeting? The concensus is "true". Caen - $30 to meeting - for using Macsyma for personal work during June. He has a previous Warning Form, about using his Student account for a thesis; he payed us back for it. He is being called. He needs it for June because he is leaving in July. CWH suggests that he call Jim O'Dell and ask for a test account on the Mathlab project, as it is a large, weird problem. Given, contingent that O'Dell doesn't. People should stress to users that they shouldn't give out their passwords. Yap, Daniel - $40 to meeting - for finishing a design description that he has started writing. Also for a resume. Rejected out of foot. We just solved the check mystery. It was Shine-nee Tung Chang's check. Suen, Sua-der - $20 to meeting - to finish and print her paper. She says that it will be her last request. There was much confusion about her current allocation vs. what it says on her applications. It seems that we never actually gave her $20 that we had allocated. We will give her that. KYM came in during this. Charoen-Rajapark, Chat - $800 Coop to meeting - (the Royal Thai embassy is picking up the tab). To allocate money for him, write a recquisition and have him sign it, as Student Accounts is covering any amount, up to $1000. RLL suggests that we give it to him in small chunks (like $200). RK suggests that we allocate him $800, but not bill Student Accounts until he is done and only for what he uses. WMY suggests that we set up a project for him. We will do this. Total appropriations: $30 without Coop Autoed: Student: $0 370: $0 To Meeting: $30, EC: $0, all Student. Coop: $305 Other Other: c/ bought Scotch tape. "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is restarting again, on WGBH. CWH mentioned some crummy Dec graphics VT100 type terminal. A student in Cal. was charged with a felony for using his school computer to connect to other computers. Another student reported that his Utah state tax return check was $800,000 too high. This error was created because of a bad diskette. Various movie expeditions upcoming. ACW was hired by Symbolics to write documentation. There was a trip to Walden Pond (otherwise known as Caterpillar City) yesterday. Then they went to Minuteman National Park for a cookout. Alan bought a bookcase. RK took out the garbage this morning. Whale sounds exude from the apartment under Alan's. 2+2=4. KYM's younger brother will matriculate here next year. RLL has a set of random questions, a Games magazine contest. Gary Palter went to Legal Seafood with us on Saturday, and is expected to go to dinner again tomorrow. Prof. Bill Martin died last week. The meeting was adjourned at 21:26. Minutes taken and submitted by Barry Margolin.
