Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 15 June 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:35 by William M. York. In attendance were GMP, barmar, RK, CAH, Jay, DMK, naha, WMY, c/, RDM, BIM. Late were: JSL, JCG, Ed, PAE, Alan, KYM, JIS, DCP The minutes of the meeting of 8 June 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. The minutes of the telecommunications subcommittee meeting of 10 June 1981 were read. JCG came in during this. JSL came in during this, and showed us a glowing frob, so we read some of the minutes by frob-light. Afterwards, he told us about it. Ed came in after this. Treasurer's Report: New phone bills are in, check off your calls. Last week's flaming about unpaid bills seems to have helped. The treasurer and the ex-treasurer cleaned up the books today, and the treasurer will attempt to make a year-end report. Year to date: $112,855.31, not including the fixed costs for June. We will turn off all the 370 users who haven't used their accounts in a while. We will not have Charoen-Rajapark give us a requisition until he is done, which should be at the end of the month. We will not set up a project for him because he will be using the account for such a short time. DCP and Alan came in during this. Chairman's Report: The chairman's tenants moved out, taking the carpeting with them. The chairman will attempt to write something for the Annual Report. Office Report: Alan will try to set up the coolie list. The toaster-oven that Steve left us disappeared out of the darkroom a week and a half ago. Someone should pick up the Form B's at Beane tomorrow. There is a check on the board for it. The loft will be redesigned. There is now graph paper in the office. People should put manuals back in the rack!! The chairman is getting ready to lock the rack. Computer Services: RK fixed the assoc-seg and accounting data to know about the new projects. We have to start doing things relating to the changeover. RK will set up a Student login message telling people that they have to reapply in order to keep their accounts. We are administrating te DoLayer project, because Bobby is going away and needs someone to watch over it. Jay has rewritten charge_for_storage. People on the Student project are getting login messages from the system telling them about the fact that Student is low on money, and soon about the cutoff date. It should be ignored. Telecommunication Report: The telecommunications meeting minutes were already read. CBF's netmail to SIPB pertaining to the terminal contrator were read. He is against using such old equipment and suggests getting Q-Bus compatible equipment. The terminal concentrator was discussed. CAH suggests that we shouldn't buy any extra hardware until we get the concentrator up and running successfully. DCP says that our Chaos port is for the Unibus, and a Q-Bus Chaos connector is expensive. WMY suggests that we start out with what we have, and come up with a proposal for the ADB for money to switch over to Q-Bus technology. (There was a short pause while WMY glowed in the dark.) This precludes buying a DZ11. This seems the right thing. CAH suggests that we buy a graphics printer that doesn't need to be hooked up to an ADM3A. These cost on the order of $3K to $4K. DCP asked whether we still want to so many Ann Arbor terminals for dorms, since we aren't planning on getting the DZ11. RLL thinks so, since we can hook them up directly to Multics until they are put on the concentrator. CAH reminded us that the hardware for this is somewhat expensive. This seems like the way to go. WMY still has to talk to FinBoard and ADB. RDM wants to see a demo of the VT100 upgrade. Since S&S Electronics is selling it, we should be able to get a demo. DMK suggests that we get in touch with the dormitories about whether they want another terminal, and where they can fit it, etc. PAE volunteered to do this. RLL says that ADB was talking about matching funds, so we should talk to them, since we have funds for them to match. naha thinks we should wait until January before hacking the concentrator, as he thinks Gill Pratt's network will work. CAH moves that we buy 9 Ambassadors and Black Box modems, arrange demos of graphics printers and VT100 upgrades, bring up terminal concentrator on line. Approved. The acting Next House (aka 500 Memorial Drive) govt. says that they would like a video and printing terminal. RK doesn't like Ann Arbor Ambassador terminals. There was much argument about the merits of Ambassadors. PAE, JIS, and KYM came in during this. RAR has a new Teleray 100 terminal, which is a VT100-compatible terminal. RLL suggested that he put it in the pool room to see how people like it. There was discussion about the possible speeds of terminals, and whether there exist decent color/character terminals. Publications Report: Jean Bonney has promised us a set of new VM/SP manuals. Jean Bonney was throwing out her old SigPlan Notes, so RDM got them and has donated them to the office. They shouldn't be left here, as they will just be more unused cruft. We are running low on Emacs Intro's. We should rewrite it. We will get 50 more until this happens. R/O Report: The Activities Midway will be Thursday, 3 September 1981 in DuPont (or in the Athletic Center if the DuPont floor isn't finished). There will be an Activities Open-House on the day before Reg-Day. That might be a good day for the tour. We have to order phones at least a month in advance for the Activities Midway. What will happen if the Midway isn't where they say it is? It shouldn't be a problem switching them. We should order them ASAP, and the Phone Co. them about the problem with knowing where we want them. BIM suggests that we order phones for both and shove the burden of financial responsibility on the R/O Committee. The Athletic Center may not have enough lines going into it. We decided to order one set of phones, and work on fixing up the location when and if necessary. WMY dug out the old freshman letter and is not happy with it. He will make modifications and submit it for approval. Other: Fred Richardson called this week. He wants to intern with us again this summer. We need someone to sponsor him. Noone seems to have the time. He might be able to work on his own, though, with computer time given from us. Barmar will call him and tell him this. BIM has been recruited as HSSP's computer-class teacher recruiter. He would like SIPB members to teach HSSP courses. He also suggests that we run a summer LISP course. Alan is somewhat interested. Leo Ryan has exiled HSSP from the pool room, so what are they going to do next year with the computer time we give them? Perhaps we should intercede in their behalf. There is a Thomas Foo in the incoming freshman class. The Dover is alive again, and producing great output. If you send snail to DCP at his NW16 office, put in the middle initial, as there is a David A. Plummer in the same building. The Project Stile people who we were funding this month sent us a thank-you letter. It was CC'ed to Louis Menand, the Assistant Provost, who lobbies for giving money to student organizations. Newton Loui gave us back his key, as he is not going to be a student next term (and may not be around the rest of this summer?). Applications: Piccone, John - $30 to meeting - to finish working on classwork for a course at NYU. Given. The Project Stile people are $63 in the hole on the 370, and want this money and enough to log in and copy their stuff to tape, for a total of $85. They also gave us the Report they produced. Given. James Turner cancelled his Coop account! Total appropriations: $115 without Coop Autoed: Student: $0 370: $0 To Meeting: $115, EC: $0, all Student. Coop: $207 Other Other: DCP has a LISP Server on ITS that uses the CLO device. It is a replacement for LISPT and LEDIT. Jay was surprised when he saw the DEC Computer Store in the Manchester Mall. He was really thrown when he saw someone walk in and buy a VT100 and walk out with it. KYM has written "Paris vaut bien une masse" on the board. KYM then gave us a history lesson. RLL is looking into aluminum can recycling. He thinks we should save our Seven-Up and Dr. Pepper cans and make some money by selling them. Episode 2 of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" will be on tonight. JCG has a weird CMS problem for people who want a challenge. There were several expeditions to see "Raiders of the Lost Ark" this weekend. It was a really gross win. JPT has gotten a job from CISL, getting free computer time for his work. He is rewriting prt_conv_ in PL/I from ALM. Engel.Coop has been having trouble with the Multics Graphics System, and CDT called here in order to find him. The meeting was adjourned at 22:00. Minutes taken and submitted by Barry Margolin.
