Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 28 June 1982 The meeting was called to order at 19:49 by Wendy E. Rowe In attendance were WER, GMP, Alan, DCP, Barmar, RK, JSL. Late were: CAH, Jay, Naha, ED. The minutes of the meeting of 21 June 1982 were read and accepted as corrected. The minutes of the earlier meeting of 28 June 1982 were also read and acceptedd as corrected. Treasurer's Report: YTD spending $110 818.84. We're still out of money. Jay is working on fixing the cutoff date for the SIPBADMIN project. Chairman's Report: WER talked with Wes. He said that we will not know our budget until after 1 July, which means that we will continue to operate at a deficit through July. He suggested that we keep things turned down. IPS is looking at Building 11 and Wes emphasized that it is much smaller than the space in Building 12. Re: Prof. Frank Bunn. Wes okayed the Co-op application for his son, BUT Wes would like to talk to WER on the general subject of Co-op accounts sometime in the future. 20:05-Our operating budget now comes from MIT's operating budget. Corby would like us to have a combined budget (operating, capital, computer, ...) with Wes as the administrator. Would the administrator decide the mix of our services? Office Report: 20:06-Form B's are in. WER and Steve chose orchid as the color, after a mix-up at Beane about which combinations of weight and color of paper were available. 20:09-WER ordered two of each kind of typewheel. 20:10-CBF thinks we should move the office around. 20:41-WER has made a place to collect requests for Lisp notes. Computer Services: 20:11-The Mathlab project will be going away. Can their Lisp stuff be moved to a SIPB hierarchy temporarily? -- Alan 20:12-WMY dumped the PDT's. All the defunct users must be removed. WMY is also working on a program that prompts for application information and builds a data base and updates the PMF. Statistics from the PDT's have been taken, but other stats must be taken from the applications. GMP has the number-crunching programs on tape. 20:16-NUMS need to be rewritten. -- WER 20:41-Maybe the Shift I warning message should be reinstated in the start_up for next term. We could even turn off Shift I and have users ask specifically for permission to use Multics during Shift I. We should THINK about it. 20:44-The blue books fell down and Barmar yelled. Naha was here for this, but couldn't save them from falling. 20:52-370 and JCF users were deleted by c/ and Jay respectively. Telecommunications Report: 20:17-RK feels that the UDS modems (5@$495 each) should be returned, partially because they are 1200 baud only. He thinks that they should be replaced with VADICs at $700 each. One of the UDS 212's is not working. Motion to send these back and to get VADICs at the cheapest possible price made by RK. Seconded by WMY. CBF believes that the additional capability of 300 baud is not worth the extra $200+. Motion failed. 20:29-The Student Center line is still not working. CAH looked at the terminal lines for the ADM-3A and Z-19's and he thinks that they all work. Clearly, WER and CAH should go and look at the lines together. 20:32-Three volunteers are needed to check the lines out and find the broken one. 20:31-The New House VADIC must be sent back. 20:33-Microwave link. 20:33- Z-19 keyboards cannot be put back together for $50 as in the past, according to the place at Wellesley. Somebody should get all the people who are having problems with Z-19's who are on the INFO-Z-19 mailing list to sign a complaint and send it to Zenith. 20:36- Next House data link. All the plugs were out of the wall. RK plugged the equipment back together. All the places with VADICs installed by RK (East Campus, McCormick, MacGregor, Next House) have exclusion switches. RK found out that the phone's number was 494-WXYZ (wrong!). He called TelCo repair. Somebody must have screwed around with the phone closet. 20:40- MacGregor will be moving their own phone lines around; a situation similar to the above may affect the MacGregor terminal move. Somebody should talk to MacGregor people. Publications Report: 20:47-FORTRAN addenda are still here. 20:48-An EMACS addendum is still in the Student Center, but not in the rack. See RK for details. More Stud Center keys should be cloned. 20:48-WER thinks that maybe the NETS should be given out in the Publications Office, because a lot of people are using them. The NETS are simpler than AP-41 and AP-42 (IPS's memos that are similar in purpose to the NETS). We will not do this. Annual-Report Report: 20:51-The Annual Report is on the Board. WER spent most of Sunday night typing them up. Please comment. Discussion of the future content of the IBM 370 report followed. We need a cover. R/O Report: 20:54-HDT and WER showed some interest in the SIPB Computer Tour. Who should we contact? Other: 20:55-There is a mention in the Tank MacNamara comic strip of modems. 20:55-JSL says that MULTICS must get a distant host interface if it is to remain on the ARPAnet during the move. MULTICS will probably be taken off the ARPAnet at the end of the year for software reasons, according to CAH. 20:58-WER has re-designed the yellow card which will be available in time for the freshmen. 20:58-We were mentioned in the 19 July 1982 Sky & Telescope as the funders of the design of a sundial. 20:59-New applications should be taken even if people had money last year. Do NOT use continuation forms in these cases. ED entered. 21:26-Naha can vote until Reg Day. Steve has probably been re-admitted. WER has decided that Steve can vote. Applications: Co-op, Autoed ============= Schur, Sharon J. $20.00 for word processing of resume and cover letters; only until we can fund her on our new budget on 1 July 1982. Meier Zu Sieker, Friedrich. $10.00 cash for more thesis. King, Tony. $100.00 for thesis. Weller, Robert Jason. $10.00 to write cover letters. Barmar led discussion of the legitimacy of approving accounts for text processing of cover letters and resumes. 21:06-CBF brought up the subject of publicizing a monetary limit on text processing. [The flame burns on...] Alan says that we should collect some statistics before we make a decision. CBF made a motion to put in the policy statement a publicized $200.00 absolute limit per person for text processing only. 21:25***Fails with tie broken by the Chairperson. Total appropriations: $0.00 without Coop Autoed: Student: $0.00 370: $0.00 To Meeting: $0.00, EC: $0.00, all Student. Coop: $140.00 Other Other: 21:25-JSL discovered that Deli House closed early. He went to Charlie's All-Night Deli, which he does not recommend. 21:28-Jay had 13 fatal process errors one night. 21:28-CBF is the US tiddlywinks pairs champion, along with Jay Sachs. 21:29-WMY says that our student users spent $62K, while we had allocated $88K. The users who spent over $200.00 spent a higher percentage of their allocations then other users. 21:31-Discussion of the lack of merits of the movie Firefox followed. Anybody who would like to see Bladerunner with WMY should talk to him after the meeting. 21:32-WMY and Barmar tracked down an EMACS bug. 21:32-The 4th of July will be arriving soon. The annual SIPB 4th of July party will be held. Speak to WMY. 21:33-There was a space shuttle launch and Jay missed it. Jay had a case of deja vu...none of his pages were written out because ESD failed due to stoppage of the answering service and a disk error. He read the same mail, etc. 21:36-Barmar and his friend were surprised by a firecracker when Barmar's friend was filling his motorcycle's gas tank. 21:38-WMY and a friend were driving around throwing firecrackers a while back. The firecracker bounced off a window and back into the car. 21:38-Barmar says that The Stuntman was on two cable channels simultaneously in New York. 21:39-WER called up the TelCo to get a credit card. All of the numbers in last year's phone book were wrong and the operators were having trouble using the new switchboards. 21:40-Barmar discussed AAA phone numbers. One must call New York City to get emergency service in Westchester. The meeting was adjourned at 21:41 EDT. Minutes taken and submitted by Richard Lai
