Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of March 28th, 1983 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by Barmar. In attendance were Barmar, DM, PSR, Jay, BCN, KAM, Naha, and RK. Late were RSW, Steve, and JR. TO MEETING APPLICATIONS Spellman, Roger, wants $100 for 21.784. Has had $200 already. Given. (RSW came in during this.) (KAM left during this.) The minutes of the previous meeting were summarized after a reminder from the Secretary. (Steve came in during this.) TREASURER'S REPORT The month to date Multics spending is 12,200 (SIPB/SIPBADMIN is 1293), and year to date Multics spending is 84,100. JR made a deposit (for the SIPB) today. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT (CBF typed his report in before hand.) There is a letter from Wes Burner on the board regarding next year's budget. It breaks down to the following. Computer time - SIPB users $120K SIPBADMIN + SIPB $ 30K ----- Total Computer Time $150K or $5K more than this year. Telecom Capital + Operating $ 29K Of course Wes had led me (CBF) to believe that the computer time would be $150K for users $30K for SIPB and SIPBADMIN. CBF hasn't yet seen Wes to find out whether we merely had a communications difficulty or he decided the lesser amount was all he could afford. Personally, if Wes is not easily agreeable, CBF is not inclined to press this difference, since we both agreed that if there was still an IPS deficit next year (which there is almost certainly going to be), then we have a good chance for another mid-year supplemental. CBF would rather concentrate on the other things in the proposal, the ones designed to establish SIPB as more than just a means of channeling funds through the director of IPS into the IPS budget to help reduce the deficit. Toward that end there is a letter in >udd>sipb>ops>sec>c>dickson.runoff which is intended as a cover letter to send the budget on higher in the institute hierarchy. CBF has shown this letter to Corby and Bruce and Bruce is supportive of the idea. CBF has gotten a large amount of ribbing in response to his request asking for people to tell him when they do some work for the SIPB. Most of the ribbing has come from people who do their share of work for the SIPB. The intent of this idea was not so much to find out who was doing work as to find out who was not doing work. In case no one has noticed, things are not getting done around here, or the things that are being done are being done by a small portion of our membership. Nowadays the members of SIPB in total contribute less of their time to the productive activities of the board than at any other time CBF can remember. Our membership is by number as high as its ever been. Needless to say CBF does not enjoy being chairman of a moribund organization. If his efforts to get things done in a reasonable fashion around here are futile (more than futile, ridiculed and resisted) than he will not continue them long. By reasonable fashion he means having enough of a membership contributing to the active running and advance of the causes of the board that those of us that do so do not feel that we are working by ourselves. A short discussion of how and why the SIPB is losing getting things done followed. OFFICE REPORT CBF has heard a rumor that more money is being used to purchase new furniture for IPS. He thinks that a volunteer should be chosen at this meeting to draft a letter to whom it may concern (either Wes Burner, or Garret Sheldon who is in charge of the move) saying how old and decrepit our furniture (especially our rolling stock) is and why we deserve new furniture. This draft should be ready by Wednesday. If a draft is not ready by Wednesday, CBF will not write it, we just won't ask for new furniture. Paul will write it. COMPUTER SERVICES Jay fixed general_ready to print a message a 9 AM warning that the rates are getting expensive. There was another discussion of retrieval requests. People should fill out continuation forms for retrieval requests and make sure that the file doesn't still exists. TELECOMMUNICATIONS REPORT BCN and a few other people (from next house) will speak to Dean Wilson on Thursday about getting a west campus terminal facility. BCN summarized a terminal service that was sent to Next House residents. Jay said something about terminals being loaned to LSC. We decided to see what CBF has to say in his report. CBF has experimented with putting the magnetic strips that the student center library uses to protect books into a VT100 keyboard. Sure enough the alarm goes off when you try to walk out with a VT100 keyboard. Two of our keyboards are now protected in this fashion, there was a user on the center one. There is handful of magnetic strips in the toolbox in the cabinet how. CBF has that LSC borrowed 3 terminals this weekend for some nefarious purpose. CBF took two back and left one on indefinite loan today. There's a liability agreement on the board for it, which should be filed someplace appropriate. Naturally, we can ask for it back whenever we want. CBF says there was an abortive microwave party this last week that CAH can describe more about. CAH was not here. Since Corby had asked me for a memo detailing what the problems were in completing the microwave, CBF wrote such a memo after the party abortion and gave it to him. The memo is in >udd>sipb>ops>sec>c>uwave.text. It might be instructive to read it at the meeting. (It was read.) (JR came in during this.) Naha said that we punted on the microwave party because of the winds. He resummarized CBF's memo. TERMINAL REPORT The east campus terminal has been switch with the office terminal. It should be fixed. We have a can of contact cleaner. We will try and check to see if Dec has fixed the MacGregor and Student House LA36's. Our dormphone in the student center library may be broken. Student House's has been fixed. We think MacGregor's has been fixed. PUBLICATIONS REPORT We are out of LISP notes. We should have 100 Multics LISP Notes printed. ANNUAL-REPORT REPORT (hah!)
