Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 06/15/92


	The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by dcctdw.

	Treasurer's Report:

		Replacing binkley's keyboard will cost $120.00.  Do we
want to pay?  How do we pay?  Can we give the machine back without
having to pay for it?  Maybe.  When do the VSII's go away?  Should we
pay for it?  No.  Motion to move binkley to machine room for the time
being.  Seconded.  No vote.  Does someone want to investigate swapping
a keyboard?  Buzz.  There are no keyboards in the machine room.
Aforementioned vote is taken.  It will be done.

	Chairman's Report:

		tritan is introduced as a sentient squid. 

		Cleaning up old guest accounts in the sipb cell?
Accounts for non-members: they should go away. Other accounts are:
members with no athena principal, members who haven't logged in in
ages.  Accounts for members: they should not go away, as long as they
are keeping reasonable space standards.  Worth investigating and
bringing up later.  Does someone want to investigate this?  SIPB afs
administrators have to do this.  ckclark will come up with a summary of
stuff.

	Office Report:

		It's here.  Interesting device in the door.  Volunteer to take 
trays down?  Kevin volunteers.  (This should become a tradition -- dcc)

	MIT Computing Report:

		Artemis down today.  Much of main campus got "boinged" today.
Moira was down, it's back now. 

        Computer Services:

		Move to terminate.  Second.  Move to second seconded.

		OS/2 stuff.  bjaspan believes OS/2 is the best
operating system to run on Cutter.  In order for him to continue to do
development, he needs decent software.  Lots of stuff being developed.
Wants: official release of C compiler and most recent release of
TCP/IP stuff.  Prices:
	compiler: $300
	TCP/IP: $150-$500 Also, some more hardware.  Video memory as
well ($84).  Wants to make a motion to approve $884 for all the
software and hardware, not including the money needed to fix the
memory problem.  Debate?  Do we need it soon, or should we wait until
the debate about bigger spenditures (i.e., machines) settles?  (Later
decided that bjaspan should wait.)  Some discussion about MIT's fiscal
year.

Motion is seconded.  Many, none, one.  If we can get the memory in
this fiscal year, we should try.  $200 for memory, $84 for video
memory.  Should he mention the software stuff to Kathy Allen now?  No.

		Machines.  tytso, mhpower, mhbraun talked to Jeff
Schiller and Peter Roden.  They will give us two Maxines if we used
them for news service.  Will give us machines for servers, not
clients. They want a proposal for what services run on what machines;
they might give us another server machine.

		tytso: SIPB acts as a service provider and as a
departmental cluster.  There are three classes of machines SIPB gets
from IS: Clients, build machines for new architectures, and server
machines.  DCNS are willing to support new platforms and servers, but
not client machines.  We should be talking to Jim Bruce's office for
clients.  This is not to say we won't get client machines or slush
space; we will not get them from DCNS.  So, we should make a proposal.

		srz points out that software-porting machines are
often office machines.  Did Peter understand we were using the RS6K for
disk space?  Yes.  Jeff says he had to pull strings to get us one RS6K,
and that it was given to us to port SIPB software.  We used it as an
AFS server, in addition to porting.  Jeff's perception is that he had
to yell at us to do decent porting.  In any case, there is a certain
breach of trust now.  We shouldn't argue with him; this is not the way
to gain back trust.  If we want to get hardware from DCNS, we should
write a proposal listing the services we provide.  This serves a number
of purposes.

		Bottom line: mhbraun is working on said proposal. Is
this implying that we have to put the services on the machines we say
we will?  No.  We should talk to Jeff about it. But first, we should get
facts.  We should document.  Does someone want to talk to Jeff?  yandros
will do it if no one else wants to.  srz and bjaspan will also help.

		Proposal is in /afs/sipb/user/mhbraun/sipb.

		jik wants to reboot rosebud; somewhere after ten. or
after midnight.  or maybe tomorrow.  scheduling problems reign.  What
is the point of announcing?  Because people will get errors; we need
to be polite to users.

		Anyone have problems with merging /afs/sipb/project/guest and
/afs/sipb/admin/guest? No.

		Look into licensing dictionaries?  It needs to happen.
Who?  Someone should move webster off of portnoy.  This has been
mentioned before.  Would it be something for the MIT libraries to do?
Chad volunteers marthag.  She agrees.  Chad is approaching squidliness.

		mhpower has finished mitvma stuff.  Notes are in
/afs/sipb/admin/text/vma.  dcctdw will do his followup this week.

		Is anyone doing it?  Will be done as soon as hodge is rebooted.

	Publications Report:

		Annual report:  new revisions. Bleed more.

		iAFS:		there will be a copy around tonight to 
				be bled on.

		iPS:		there should be a copy floating around.
				don't let it drag.

	R/O Report:

		R/O tours.  rjbarbal has thought about thinking about
it.  He is now thinking about it.  Is looking for contact people: people
with clues should send mail.

		Frosh mailing is away.

		It's in January.

		We have coke.  There was much rejoicing.  Lots of apple juice.
