Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 06/22/92


	The meeting was called to order at 1930 by mhpower.

Chairman is in NJ.  Vice is in Maine.

	Office Report:

Star Trek noises in door (Glenn-Glenn sound?).  No edge detection.

	MIT Computing Report:

OLC server is down.  Moira is scheduled to go down for various fixes.

Users are starting to notice AFS semantics lossage, like loss of authentication
during login.

Test dialup is up and running 7.4.

BCS-Internet-SIG discuss meeting: Unconfirmed reports that Athena is
thinking about supplying BCS members some accounts for exploring the
Internet.  

New alarm system went in next door for cluster while deploying new
workstations.  Combo may still change.  Alarm is not Ninja-proof.
(Kevin-proof?).

        Computer Services:

Barry rewrote machine proposal, and gives summary.  This is a 3-year
plan for SIPB hardware for client machines and servers.  This is a
bare minimum hardware request; initial request is for 2 client
machines (VS3100 & (RS6000 | Maxine)), and no servers except for news
machines (the old news servers will replace Charon/Pit-manager
functionality).  More machines next year when RT's go away.

Discussion about whether we should ask for 3 client machines or not.
Deemed to be bad for political reasons; better if we don't look
greedy.  Some discussion about having a loaner Maxine while the news
machines are being moved over.  People raise hands, proposal is
approved.  Will be presented to Athena later this week.

[Chad awakens!]

Martha goes to Kathy about making long-distance phone calls, and gets
permission, after a little misunderstanding.

Portnoy has a slightly larger swap partition, after webster dictionary
was moved off.

Q status:  Any closer?  Epsilon closer.  Unclear if anything is happening.

        SIPB AFS Cell Backup Report:

Done by Rhu.  Error on Calvin's volume, but otherwise life is happy.
Guess Calvin's volume felt abandoned.

Matt Power tested restoring some files from a new Sony tape, and it
worked.

What about backup of other server machines?  Do we want to expand our
backup protocol?  Discussion about what machines to backup.  We have
two tape drives, and we now know how to write tapes on Rosebud, but
need more testing for interoperability.  Discussion of doing automatic
backups on Rosebud for Charon and Beacon.  Machine maintainers should
look into it.

Two new keyboards and a new mouse did not appear in the office last
week.

	Publications Report:

Inessential AFS is being printed out.  Hopefully near final by next week.

	R/O Report:

Richard is still thinking.  He's hoping that other people will do
stuff.  No one sent mail, so no one has a clue.  Shabby?

	IAP Report:

October is IAP planning month.

Discuss meeting archive of SIPB mailing list.  Survey says: XXX (no)
Matt Braun argues for a limited archive (last [n] transactions).  Marc
suggests an archive with a limited acl.  Matt Power thinks the flavor
of SIPB list may change if it starts getting archived.  A limited
access meeting would be more work for people who are on the acl to
process retrieval requests from people who have prematurely deleted
messages.  No archiving is happening at the moment.  Marc and Matt
Braun will keep a recent archive as an experiment, to see what
happens.

	Other Other:

Len has no hair.

We have a kindler, gentler, computationally-intensive Fuzzball.

Interphasers arrive Saturday.  Move to terminate.  Discussion on
tritan's entrails.

Port Jeff is a tourist town.

Frisbee report:  Consensus was that it wasn't too cold, and Len is a wimp.

Blood drive next week Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

There may be a caving trip next week.

Summer is here!  Our days are getting shorter.

CP's are very scary from two feet above them.
