Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/08/96

	The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by ghudson.

	Office Report:

We're in the office for a change.  And it's still a pit.

	MIT Computing Report:

Most of the file servers were shutdown last week.  More will be shutdown this
week.

	Computer Services:

We had two AFS problems last week.  One related to our Seagate 4 Gig
disk slowing down on us.  Fiddling with the order of disks in the SCSI
chain made the problem go away (for now).  We also had a Micropolis
disk die on us.  We got a replacement disk from Matt Braun and managed
to get the data off of the dead disk.  We lost two volumes due to
these problems.  One was linux.slackware.nb, which Joanna has
restored.

Chad moves that SIPB buy a Plan 9 source code distribution for $350.
This would be a permanent license for the entire MIT community.  It is
around 500 megabytes.  Plan 9 is not abandoned, but "finished".  Bell
Labs is now working on a new OS called Brazil, so Plan 9 is not likely
to go anywhere in the near future.  We're not planning on running it
on an office machine permanently right now.  It will run on most of
the machines we have in the office.  Motion to allocate up to $400 for
the license passes 4-2-7 (high apathy factor noted).

There's a chance that the Clarinet feed will be less reliable as
Clarinet moves our feed to BBN planet, which is usually behind in news
compared to us.

Discussion about whether we should change the primary names for the
AFS servers from Rosebud2 and Ronald-ann2 back to Rosebud and
Ronald-ann.  This will be discussed on sipb-afsreq.

There are murmurings about ops getting us a fileserver-configuration
Sparc 5 for the SIPB cell to upgrade a Decstation, and letting us keep
the replaced Decstation as an extra DB server.  We may also be able to
keep the replacement for the Micropolis drive, thus adding 4GB to the
cell.  None of this is confirmed yet.

	SIPB Backup Report:

Karl is trying to do a backup again.  Some of the tapes seem to have
been used excessively, so someone should go get blank tapes soon; we
have probably already allocated money for them.

Server backups were completed last week.

	Publications Report:

jhawk moves (for Emil Sit) to allocate $20 for copying one-sheets
for the Linux class.  Passes on white ballot.

	R/O Report:

	IAP Report:

Matthew and Stan are thinking of doing a Java course.  Nathan Williams
may also help out.

Linux class is next week.  It would be nice if Jered didn't have to do
all five lectures, so he's asking for volunteers from people who know
about Linux.

jhawk will schedule the NetBSD class tomorrow [that is, he'll call the
scheduling office, not schedule it for tomorrow].

PostScript class is going on right now in 1-115.  It's 7-9pm every day
this week.

	CokeComm Report:

We have Coke.  Yay!  No root beer, though, and disgusting orange soda.

	Other:

jhawk's patches to add TOS (type of service) to SunOS are done.  There
has been one download so far.  They're on pub/jhawk on sipb.mit.edu.

BBN will be doing something redundant sometime this week in case MCI
explodes.

	Other Other:

Wonderful weather outside.  Massacre jered in the snow after the meeting.

Lots of people are stuck at home.

Bean has a large heavy object in her hands.

As soon as the doctor tells Chad that his bursitis is better, then he'll
try to organize a game of Ultimate at the ice rink.
