The old ec votes 7-1-0 to ratify the elections. No objections stated. ghudson passes the gavel to nocturne. jhawk: I would like to enter my objection of taking care of normal business before the election. Office Report: ghudson: I move to allocate up to $300 to buy a 1 gig scsi disk to be hooked up to a PC to allow people to do development of OS's which we haven't supported. It would probably go on limekiller, later to go on quiche. jweiss: There's a 1 gig disk that was bought earlier, but not used. ghudson: It was meant for the news server, and we still want to use it there. It will have a warranty but not a service contract. sgw: Why 1 gig not 2 gig? ghudson: Prices seemed better. cat: Have you set a price? ghudson: Yes. jtkohl: Do we have bay space and cables to put it in limekiller. jered: I'll have to check. ghudson: We can also put it in an enclosure. passes many-2-5 yonah: I move we allocate $50 to get scanner software for the HP. jhawk: Does PINT not support hpux? ghudson: I'm not sure, but we've found problems with it on limekiller. yonah: I don't think so. mycroft: Why do we want this? ghudson: The HP has a larger monitor and more memory. yandros: Is it available for other platforms? yonah: Linux, HP, and FreeBSD only. jhawk: Perhaps our purpose would be better served by fixing the problems with PINT. Even so, I think we shouldn't purchase commercial software for trivial tasks. proven: Since this works also on FreeBSD, it might work under netbsd. yonah: We don't have to specify an architecture (I think). sgw: Could we talk with the vendor and get it free in exchange for porting to NetBSD? ghudson: It's only $50. passes many-2-9 nygren: Is this only if we get it for all platforms? ghudson: Not clear. bert: I move to swap opus and thornhump. jweiss: Don't move to swap machines, just do it, but don't do that (talk to me offline). rjbarbal: the office is a pit. people who drink IBC and Diet Coke should clean up. jhawk: Move to allocate $5 to get new dry-erase markers. jered: I'd like to have some discussion. I don't believe that $5 is enough for dry-erase markers. Last time I looked they were about $30 for a set. It would be nice to look. jhawk: Okay, amend that to allocate $10 instead. jhawk: No dry-erase markers in the office supplies drawer. white ballot. cat volunteers. kretch: Motion to allocate $5 to get something to hold a pen to the table by a hot seat. jered: I think we should just use string and tape. bert: It's impossible to remove it later. yandros: We might want to have someone make a list of office supplies and allocate money later. Motion withdrawn. hartmans: Have we bought the DLT drive yet? jered: Still waiting on a third quote. jhawk: Some time ago we allocated money to buy the steven's network programming book to replace a missing copy. Someone should deal. yoav volunteers. MIT Computing Report: mhbraun: There was an outage yesterday caused by ringworld. Computer Services: mhbraun: There was a picayune outage for several hours today, and nobody said anything to consultants. mhpower: There was a complaint about RTFM's FTP server, which signed off with "Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow." ghudson: penguin-lust now has 172 meg of physical memory. SIPB Backup Report: jweiss: Everything was done last week. jered: I cleaned the tape drive. It was fun. Publications Report: jemorris: abbe wrote up notes on matlab; they have some stuff which isn't covered in essential matlab, and are missing some stuff which is. It might be useful to create iMatlab (advanced) to supplement eMatlab, or to update eMatlab. marthag: Neither of those are tradition or policy. Generally, inessential documents don't require the essential documents. jcb: There's historical precedent for inessential documents being extensions of Athena documents. nocturne: can this be taken offline to sipb-office? R/O Report: '() IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: We have lots of cans, including grape. jcb: Someone should take recyclables down. Other: svalente: I'm a student. jhawk: NANOG is at the end of this week. abbe: The Mathworks is a cool company. hartmans: Tcp's implementation of urgent data is really broken, and BSD's implementation of out-of-band data is even worse. Therefore, rlogin sucks. sgw: I'd like to take this opportunity to reaffirm my position as Grand Poo-bah of SIPB. mycroft: London really sucks. Don't go there. nocturne: Unless you like lots of water. rjbarbal: NBC recently hired the writers from The Spot. yoav: NSA came to my class to recruit. They spent an hour and a half telling us about this cool program, then we found out none of us could obtain security clearance. bert: There is a free speech online sign hanging off of Random now. Other Other: jered: Greg Hudson is now Andy Oakland who became Mike Barker who became Mark Curby who is no longer here. sgw: As I announced last week, I quit my job. Someone told me that the Grateful Dead are no longer touring. If you have other suggestions for me, please let me know. cordelia: There are already 11 SIPB members taking 6.033, move to move the meeting to 34-101 at 2pm. sgw: I know a company looking for cool talented programmers and web people. Speak to me if you're interested. jtkohl: Congratulations to the SIPB members who recently finished their degree requirements. mycroft: For those people who pester webmasters to blackout their webpages, for many people this is a really stupid idea, and you shouldn't bother. mkgray: I'm a student again. cordelia: A blue ribbon was a poor choice (it's also used for support of policy officers shot in the line of duty). The meeting was adjourned at 21:04. Minutes taken and submitted by yonah.
