Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 03/11/96


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by nocturne.

In attendance were

Office Report:

	mwhitson: The office is a pit.

	jered: move to replace Perl books.  ($100 value)
	eichin: Are the Perl5 version coming out.
	nocturne: White ballot?

	nocturne: Did you take care of office supplies?
	cat: no
	nocturne: Add white-out.

	jweiss: Likely be an auction after next weeks meeting notably not
		including the next.  
	ghudson: Did you get approval?
	jweiss: Move to get rid of items including cutter-john, the X
		terminal, the k-box, the stuff on the fridge, but not
		the Next. Possibly the micro-fiche reader.
	mhpower: move to amend by striking items
		including. [Apparently, the point was to have a
		specific list, or at least something that couldn't be
		expanded to sell off the entire office.]
	jweiss: treats comment to replace items including with 
		some or all of the following. mhpower does not object.
	jhawk: I object to selling old hardware.  We have plenty of
		room (in the ceiling )
	hartmans: Has jweiss's motion  been seconded?
	many: second
	nocturne: Do you want to restate the motion?
	jweiss: I move to auction off or otherwise get rid of some or
		all of the X terminal, cutter-john, two line drivers,
		the k-box, and possibly the microfiche reader.  including
		cutter-john's monitor, but not a monitor for the X terminal.  
	hartmans: Friendly amendment to strike microfiche reader;
		accepted.

MIT Computing Report:

	jweiss: likely patch for RISC/6000 so you can use X to login
		as root in the next week.

Computer Services:

	mhpower: Some security problems were fixed with the web
		server.

	jhawk: The web server has a default TCP MSS of 1460.  This may
		create a problem for people on the other side of
		low-MTU links; I don't think so but it would be nice
		to know about it.

	rjbarbal: I am considering maintaining a page of resumes for
		(http://www.mit.edu/people/rjbarbal/Resume/resumes.html)
		MIT people.

SIPB Backup Report:

	nocturne: We have not tried restores over the DLT.

	marc: We can't try now; I am running a backup. 

	mwhitson: Has there been effort to port the OSU backup
		utilities for the servers?

	jweiss:  Port is the wrong word; it runs on the server.  I
		don't see any need to do that soon unless we decide to
		backup multiple servers on one tape.

	jered: The 8mm tapes are valid for  only a few read/write
		cycles, while the DLT tapes are valid for thousands of
		cycles.

Other:

	xiphmont: A release of Ogg Squish is in outland.  It is a
		version that is going to go to beta. Filed IANA mime
		type registration.

	xiphmont: I would love to have someone with a little
		experience with Windows port and maintain Ogg for
		Windows.


Other Other:

	mhpower: I plan to go to the spring flower show Tuesday,
		Wednesday or Thursday.

	jhawk:  You can run savecore after a machine has been up for a
		week if you patch it [In typical jhawk style, with gdb
		while it is running.] so it tries to run, and get an
		almost useful core file. 

	jered: Excessive snow is not nice.

	mwhitson: Yes it is.

	kcr: excessive snow is just fine if you aren't in town.

	abbe: There was a table 3/4 SIPB members and perspectives at Theta formal.
