Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 04/15/96 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by nocturne. I started hanging out here when people ordered food at all hours. . . . Then, I started hanging out here all the time. sgw: Have you coordinated a food order? danw: Not from the SIPB office. mhbraun: What was the winning time on today's marathon? danw: No clue. mhbraun: 2 hours, 9 minutes, 16 seconds gamadrid: What is a twit? danw: Someone with negative bits on something. People who couldn't log in with the old xlogin. gamadrid: only two twits. However, jik was a twit while xlogin was being tested. mkgray: Name three desupported services. danw: Multix mkgray: dialup accounts, vma accounts. [mumble]: vma not desupported. Terminals in the dorms, etc. ghudson: Who made root oops? danw: dcctdw if it was a postscript hack. [wrong. leira and foner] [someone asked him to name three services that were supported.] danw: AFS on ra, rb, rc; news bloom-beacon and news.mit.edu; discuss on charon. gamadrid: Two parts. How many rooms have been the SIPB office? danw: three; one in bldg. 39, one in 11, and w20-557. [wrong; four total, two in 39] mkgray: How many SIPB members work for the Evil Empire? danw: Jered interviewed there. [web ckclark and possibly others] jhawk: User has 5.25" Apple IIgs disk with Word5 documents. How do they read it? yoav: Laugh loudly. jhawk: Point out to user that Word5 never ran on the GS. It's often good to double-check things users tell you. You need to investigate, possibly to the point of running strings on the disk. sgw: User wants to read a nine-track tape written on a Multix system. danw: Suggest the mail that happened over sipb-office. [it is pointed out that I/S still has a nine-track reader] mkgray: In the middle of the night. SIPB AFS servers time out. danw: See if members of sipb-afsreq are on line. svalente: Move that Barry ask the question. Second, passes. sgw [quietly]: OK, so they moved that you ask the question and it passed. bjaspan: So, what's his name? sgw: Dan bjaspan: Dan, for what god-forsaken purpose do you want to join this honorable organization. danw: Normal reasons. I would like to get more involved in the NetBSD stuff. I really was planning on that, then kcr nominated me. Help users, etc. Membership vote passes 20-0-1. danw is now a SIPB member. Condolences will be accepted at the wake. Office Report: ghudson: Got one competitive quote for the PC. I should be able to buy it by the end of the fiscal year. MIT Computing Report: ghudson: Emacs 19.30 is on the syspacks. There will be a banner going up shortly. It will be the default Emacs some time during the summer. danw: Will Emacs 18 be around? ghudson: There will be an emacs18 command for a while. jhawk: We have 2 K&Rs. The old K&Rs are marked with slashes. jhawk: We need to replace the type 5 keyboard on dt; it was moved there when it broke on another computer. Computer Services: mkgray: We disabled .htaccess on the web server. This helped the load a lot. We changed afsd parameters; this helped a lot. We had one objection to disabling .htaccess. SIPB Backup Report: hartmans: AFS happened last week. jweiss: AFS is happening now; everything else happened last week. Publications Report: jhawk: I was still lame and others were too. sit: Someone tried to install Linux using ILinux. It needs more revisions. rjbarbal: We need iZephyr and iLaTeX. [This has already been allocated.] R/O Report: cordelia: I will be around during R/O but will not be the R/O sucker for SIPB. We are allowed to request two early returns.
