The treasurer is dealing. kretch moves to allocate $100 to buy Windows 95. kcr: Isn't the new Dell coming with a Windows 95 license? ghudson: No, it will come with Windows 3.1. kcr: We should wait until we get the new machine. tlyu (via nocturne) wants someone to take him to Daddy's and back to buy the CD player. kcr tentatively volunteers. jhawk: It appears that on 9/26/94 we spent $70 on materials and servicing Monty. [It was to replace speakers damaged during the Activities Midway.] Chairman's Report: nocturne: What do people think about taking the offer (from tada@mit.edu) of an Alpha? warlord: I'd like to know what we're going to do with it, but I think we should get it. kcr: We could run Linux, or NetBSD, etc.. kretch: Any strings attached? jhawk: Not that we know of. nocturne will deal. Office Report: rjbarbal: The perl book seems to be missing; it should find its way back on the shelf. kcr: During the reorganization we lost a laptop dock near opus, and produced one near oliver. Apparently people aren't using it near oliver. ghudson: It might be easier if there weren't a machine [Karl's] taking up all the free space on the table near opus. kcr wants there to be a laptop dock near opus. Wants to know how many drops there are in various places. jhawk: Let's research this and come back. [Later] kcr: There are three UTP drops on opus's wall in use; it should be possible to lower that to two, but one is milq's. kcr moves to allocate money to make another UTP drop active. jweiss: This is unnecessary. jhawk: I think there isn't really a good place for a net drop. warlord: I disagree. mycroft: Why don't we research what can be done? jweiss: Would cost $20/mo. and some startup cost. cordelia: Can't we just move one? jweiss: That will also cost money. [Fixed charge only, though.] cordelia: Can we just run wires while we're waiting for a better proposal? kcr: There's no reason to wait for "a better proposal." kcr repeats his motion, and sets a max of $300. jweiss: When this office was wired, we had an awful lot of drops turned on. We do not need more. Before we allocate money, I would really like to have some time to look at the situation and think about it. I think this is rushed. Move to table discussion. MIT Computing Report: ghudson: Early test for 8.0 under Solaris is scheduled for June 18. Computer Services: ghudson: I forgot to put the disk on reynelda last night. I'll schedule an outage for next Sunday night. warlord: Could we do it some random night? ghudson: Yes, but there's no great urgency. SIPB Backup Report: jweiss: AFS was not done last week. Sam has started it today. Everything else was done, except that penguin-lust had an archival backup done [by mhpower] instead of the normal one. [spurious motion; ignored by the chair.] mhpower: Warner Bros. created a link to the Usenet Addresses web site from the page promoting the movie Eraser. ghudson: jweiss requested a clue dump on CVS. I'm working on materials and will probably do it for SIPB and at some later time for IS staff. kretch: Emil and I have requested an AFS clue dump. jhawk: I think we're waiting for Richard [probe] to be around. jweiss: There will be an auction after the meeting. Other Other: jweiss: Loading canoes on cars while it's still light out is interesting. marc: If anyone has any graduation tickets, tell me. mycroft: Despite the trailer, Strange Days is actually a good movie. rjbarbal: 5308 minutes until Ingrid gets back.
