Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 6/10/1996 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by nocturne. In attendance were Voting members: yonah, cat, marthag, nocturne, mkgray, mhbraun, abbe, rjbarbal, bert, kretch, nathanw, cordelia, sit Associate members: ghudson, mhpower, kcr, jhawk, proven, mycroft, jweiss, eichin | sgw Non-voting members: Prospectives: jmorzins, jemorris, pipa | elliot Guests: dkb@pendor Treasurer's Report: cat: By my calculations we have $70 we can spend. This is making small estimates based on last months expenses, so we shouldn't go right up to the wire, and I think $70 is a nice small amount to have left. Chairman's Report: '() Office Report: kcr: There is exposed wiring over there in the ceiling. jhawk: No there isn't. kcr: There was yesterday. Enough that I shocked myself. I was trying to switch it on, and my hand shorted what felt like 60Hz. I think this is a very big problem, and either everything needs to be enclosed in boxes or removed. jhawk: I'd like to know about exactly what happened kcr: I went up to hit the switch, went ahhh, and shook for about 3 minutes. jhawk: We're broadcasting the meeting (audio only) to Sam. ghudson: Is it encrypted? jhawk: Yes. eichin: 1... 2... 3... [all: hi Sam] rjbarbal: The perl book is still missing from the office, so I'm willing to believe that it's been stolen. Someone might want to deal. sit: We may want to wait for the perl5 book, which should be out in August. nocturne: We'll also have money then. jweiss: People should remember to get anything of theirs which was purged out of the black bags by the coatracks. I'm going to auction stuff soon. ghudson: The speakers currently in the office were apparently fried when someone hooked up zsr's drive. We're probably going to get some old speakers from cat. Don't try to plug zsr's cd player into the amp. MIT Computing Report: '() Computer Services: ghudson: I added a 4gig disk to reynelda. You probably shouldn't use it. I also found last night that 3 of our disks have fans which stopped working. I called R^2, they are shipping us 3 new fans as well as new disks, since we don't know how long they have been running hot. I'll do swaps by moving all the data onto the new disk real soon now. mhbraun: Make sure to test the disks before installing them. ghudson: Standard policy is to test them overnight beforehand. jhawk: [something about checking to see if fans fail] jweiss: Offline. mhbraun: Today was the first time I fixed an actual service outage using adb. SIPB Backup Report: jweiss: Everything but anxiety was done last week (including AFS). AFS has not been started this week, to the best of my knowledge. Publications Report: jhawk: We seem to be doing okay. cordelia: Since the current version of iAthena is out of date, if you'd like to work on it talk to me. jhawk: In my copious free time, I may begin to work on iNroff. kcr: I may help mycroft: Someone should write iHardware. ghudson: Hardware's already inessential. pipa: I need a short little blurb about windowmanager .rc files. If you are responsible for a windowmanager and want to write one, send it to me. R/O Report: '() IAP Report: '() CokeComm Report: jweiss: I think that more coke will be showing up shortly (early this week). kcr: It is rumored that there will be more soda stuff tomorrow, non-soda stuff Wednesday.. Other: '() Other Other: sgw: There's a possibility that I might be getting hold of some number, yet to be determined, of exabyte 8200 with a 10 tape stacker unit, which I will want to resell somewhere in the $300 range (2 gig drives). bert: Would it be possible to reattach a stacker to the drive we have now? sgw: Probably not. So if you're interested, let me know. cat: I found out why the treasurer should vote against all money allocations when I saw Jane's expression when I gave her the cd player receipt. mhpower: On a related note, the large brightly colored buttons on the player would be good to use for the SIPB nuclear launch facility. cat: You may want to read the manual, since the CD player has features (single track repeat) which may be hard to disable. cordelia: Tomorrow I take my first grad class... as a GIR. abbe: AFS maintainers might be interested in going to a diner in Davis Square named Rosebud. jweiss: Rumor has it that there might be a blood drive somewhere, and there might be one next week, but its publicity sucked so much that I didn't hear about it. marthag: It happened, and I gave blood. kcr: Mary's after the meeting. elliot: I took the T from Porter to Park Street and every stop was Davis. jhawk: Anyone know a good source for electrical tape? jhawk: I failed to get audio working. jweiss: There will be ultimate after the meeting. You will come. You will enjoy it. The meeting was adjourned at 19:45. Minutes taken and submitted by yonah.
