Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 07/29/96 The meeting was called to order at 19:31 by nocturne. If you are going to destroy it or throw it out, let me know. I know some people are going to be upset that I replaced it without sending mail, so since I know people are going to argue about it, I'm skipping town. sgw: does the SIPB really need a couch? jweiss: I'm not sure that this needs a motion, but I was wondering if we should find a place to get rid of the old couch properly. mhpower: We probably shouldn't start moving SIPB property out into the hall. marthag: but it's ok if we're doing something like cleaning the office. jweiss: straw poll about the chair that matched the old couch staying in the office. Ok... so we'll keep the old chair and one or two cushions left from the old couch. mhpower: people might notice that there are little bits of couch which are peeled off. People should avoid putting duct tape and all other kinds of tape on the couch. jhawk: the reason the duct tape is there because there was a large sharp metal object sticking out of the chair and people were getting injured. yonah: On an unrelated note, a while ago, we discussed getting MAE for portnoy and even white balloted it, though no amount was allocated (in December). Do people have opinions? jhawk: I think we should do everything possible to destablize portnoy so that it will panic more often. sgw: I have an evaluation copy that the SIPB might be able to use. danw: 1) does that evaluation copy disable useful things? 2) why do we want it if we have 2 macs? nocturne: there are sometimes user questions. marc: Is MAE in 8.0? ghudson: no. kcr: Back to the couch, underneath the seat, there is a storage area. nocturne: Is this a non-accidental feature? nathanw: we could fit a body there. kcr: this might be of interest to the office czar. For example, we could put drawer contents from very inactive members under there, until they come get it. MIT Computing Report: jhawk: there is some problem on the FDDI ring, which leads to about two percent packet loss between certain points but not all points. May be related to E40 router problems. dkk: helen was having some problems. jweiss: I think it's fixed. Hardware was swapped this morning. Computer Services: ghudson: we replaced the bad disk on rosebud (rb b and c). It should be fine to use for volumes, though there's something broken about the scsi selector which I haven't marked yet. It should stay on scsi0. jhawk: PARC has something for authenticated volume releases, with ACLs and other neat stuff. People might want to look at it. ghudson: yes, I might. yonah: We added a 1 gig disk to the web server so we should be able to do more useful things with logs without filling up the disks all the time. SIPB Backup Report: Everything was done last week, this week's AFS tape is in the vault. yonah: I added the new disk to the backup list for aniety-closet. Publications Report: jhawk: iKernel-crud will have selected quotes from Bill Cattey about the lameness of transarc. It will also describe how to properly format bug reports. yonah: If someone is looking for something to do this summer, a one page on how to use the scanner would be useful. R/O Report: nocturne: I really need to get moving... does anyone want to take care of tours? jweiss: The Daily Confusion deadline is August 1. If you run tcpdump on pickled, it makes its ethernet stop working. marc: nynex and bbn both suck. A lot. Someone who gets the Playboy channel should investigate. kcr: As most of you probably know, I'm leaving after the meeting.
