Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 10/21/96


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by yonah.

In attendance were

Chairman's Report:

	yonah: The EC met and approved the amendments 7-0-0

	aurora: Move to nominate jfmurphy. [second] [12-0-5 passes]

	danw: Has anything exciting changed in your SIPB life since
		you were here last?

	pipa: No besides the big blow-up.  More people know me.

	abbe: Please repeat what you've done.

	pipa: I've worked on some docs---mostly iDotfiles.  I like to
		answer user questions.  I'm starting to learn a bit
		about infrastructure.  I would like to start working
		on development, certain migrations.

	pipa: How many people are sick of these membership meetings?

	srz: Heather, why do you want to be a SIPB member?

	pipa: I think this is a cool place that does some productive
		stuff.  I would like to enlighten non-SIPB people
		about SIPB.  I would like to keep learning like I have
		since I walked in the door.

Office Report:
	kretch: Bookshelves have been ordered.  This means chairs may
		have been ordered as well.

	jhawk: zsr appears to be broken.

	ghudson: It's been broken for a couple of days.  A few things
		are wrong; fixing it may be difficult.

	nygren: The mice and memory should be arriving in about a
		week.

	danw: We have ZSR so we can do multi-processor NetBSD port,
		but it has one processor.  There are people who want
		to do SMP NetBSD on the net.

	jhawk:  This should be discussed with ZSR's owner offline

	elliot: The monitor that got rained on is not doing anything
		besides taking up space.  Can we get rid of it?

	cat: There was some miscommunication.  I so completely forgot
		about it; I will deal.

MIT Computing Report:

Computer Services:

	ghudson: I'm attempting to order disks for news and for
		penguin-lust.  This will only be some of the stuff we
		need; in particular, we won't be getting the UPS now.

	warlord: The bug with Linux-AFS that prevented Applix from
		saving into AFS was solved.

	mkgray: Possibility of having a Win95 machine in here?

	ghudson: As far as I know, CJ has a Win95 partition. We were
		going to ask kretch to move to quiche.

	kretch: We have install materials.  I was unclear if people wanted
		it to happen on quiche.

	SO, is this for development?
	kretch: I think this was more of a pedagogical type of thing.
		It would be useful to have in the office because many
		people use it.

	mkgray: I would like to spend time getting a Win95 machine and
		getting it to run GNU32, etc.

	jhawk: I think doing this is silly and brings religious
		condemnation down on us.

	Comments on other stuff: granola and zorp are NetBSD machines,
		CJ is Linux Build, lime is scanner.  People ask why we
		have two NetBSD machines.

	ghudson: Zorp is the build machine for Athena stuff, granola
		is the NetBSD development machine. Granola tends to
		have a somewhat unstable version of the OS.

	kcr:  WHy not install on quiche as a first step?

	kretch:  objections?  jhawk (religions), jered (too slow) 

	srz: If there is development going on, then I would agree that
		quiche is under-powered.

	eichin: We don't do much development under Win95; we do it on
		Windows NT, Linux and NetBSD.

	amu: Please bleed on iLinux Athena so it could get printed.  The
		current version is on the board behind opus.

	kcr: There should be a draft of iVersion Control by next week.

IAP Report:

	kretch: Today is Monday and Friday is the deadline.  The form
		this year is different.  Look in
		/afs/sipb/project/iap/org.97 there is an entry form.

	kretch: Get things in RSN like by Wednesday.

	elliot: People helping with Internet should talk to me.

	nygren: I'm giving intro to Unix Software Development.

	srz: [compell mkgray to run Java class. mkgray fails saving
		throw vs. gullibility and agrees.]

	mkgray: I and possibly sit are teaching Perl.

CokeComm Report:

	General grumblings about pushers that don't push.

Other:

	warlord: Gene-simmons was upgraded to DR2.  I have AFS mostly
		building for gene-simmons.

	pipa: Other things were done with the machine I suggested we
		use for installs because people were somewhat
		negative.

	eichin: 2 SIPB members [jcb and nlgilman] were married this weekend.

	foley: Office Depot thought our zip code was 00000

	nygren: XF86 3.2 will be coming out in a few weeks.

Other Other:

	kcr: Boston is wetter than North Carolina.

	annmarie: Today's my birthday.

	abbe: I hear Kenmore station was flooded.  My credit reporting
		service thinks that I was born in 1919.

	aurora: Boston is not wetter than central Florida.

	rjbarbal: I'm having a tea-party next Sunday.  Add yourself to
		tea-lovers@mit.edu .

	kcr: It was wet but it wasn't as bad as a hurricane.

	warlord: Nynex sucks.  I lost my net connection for a couple of
		hours, possibly due to the weather.
