Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/5/98 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by kretch. Chairman's Report: kretch: biomorph is teaching the PostScript class, but his account is being deactivated. He'd like to keep his account while he's teaching the course. ghudson: We don't need an EC vote for this, unless someone protests. mhpower: For the guest account policy, do we think it would be a good idea to have the sponsor of an account be someone who is currently affiliated with MIT? ghudson: I don't think there's any pressing need to change the way things are. marc: I think accounts just trusts us. Since the EC can vote on it, and everyone on the EC is a student, this is probably okay. jweiss: I think the issue is that the person who requests the account will end up in a comment. I don't think accounts cares though. [Post-meeting comment from carla: Yeah, we tend to think of it as "SIPB" sponsoring the account, rather than a specific member. We usually list some sort of reference (either a transaction number from the accounts meeting or the username of the person who requested it) in the comment field in case someone needs to get more information.] Office Report: ghudson: Our Ultra has been delayed because not all the parts are here. marc: What's missing? ghudson: The floppy drive, CD-ROM, and the AUI frob. Office Cleaning Report: [No one here was present for cleaning hour on Friday.] kretch: It doesn't look too clean, but it doesn't look too dirty. MIT Computing Report: jweiss: Deactivation was scheduled for today, but will actually probably occur sometime this week. Computer Services: jhawk: We got the 1Gb disk back from ADS. It's currently on opus, running tests. jewell: We used the QIC drive on quiche to retrieve data for a user today. mhpower: There was a complaint sent to webmaster and MIT's lawyers about the Matlib page [http://www.mit.edu/madlib] violating copyright. Should we talk to the MIT lawyers about this? marc: Given what I remember being there, we might be violating copyright. jhawk: Given legal is already involved in the discussion, the webmasters should probably keep discussing things. jewell: Is this text on a page or in a URL? mhpower: Both. The word in the URL probably infringes their trademark less, but it's also on the page. kretch: I'd say talk to the lawyers. sgw: Have we asked what would satisfy them? mhpower: Not yet. marc: I think the webmasters (and hopefully whomever sent the e-mail) would find it reasonable if we added something saying "`Madlibs' is a trademark of Mumble-Foo Company" SIPB Backup Report: foley: We got all of the UFS backups done for the 1st time in a month. kretch: AFS backups will be done tomorrow. foley: What's status on new drive? jweiss: The last time I did backups (December), it was successful. Then it asked for a cleaning tape, but would spit them out when I put them in. jhawk: tlyu did a successful AFS restore. Publications Report: tap@cs.umb.edu: I'm interested in doing the Usenet documentation mentioned on the projects list, as well as working on SGML and the office manual. People who know about these things should e-mail me. kretch: I wrote a quick guide to getting started with PGP on Athena. It's in HTML. Please bleed on it. Tuesday and Thursday evenings, the first one in 50-358 (Walker 3rd floor shack) at 7:30 pm on Jan 6. eichin: Someone sent me e-mail trying to preregister for the Pilot course because they thought there was a limit of 60 people. There's no limit, so if anyone knows why this person might have heard there was a limit, please let me know. kretch: Move to allocate $200 to make up to 150 copies of the course packets for the Crash Course in C we offer. [Seconded.] jhawk: I think it would be nice to encourage the people who are doing so to worry about this stuff earlier. ghudson: How big are these packets? kretch: 10 page packets.
