Chairman's Report: '() Office Report: elliot: Never got a chance to clean drawers while I was secretary, have done one of them now, will deal with getting rid of the stuff at a meeting in the near future. jhawk: 2 things. 1. It seems to me that it's probably a good idea to talk to the office-czar-in-charge-of-special-operations before emptying drawers and filling them with other stuff. 2. The notes placed on the boxes of removed stuff are suboptimal because they imply that people should remove the items they want and take them if they don't want them thrown out. elliot: The signs can be easily changed. kretch: The carpet is not here, CAC waited to order it until they had a signature although the install date has been known for a while. Am working to get it rescheduled. elliot: I'm looking for the owners of various items in the office: hotpot, westbend instant. no takers. alarm clock. no takers. If they don't get claimed there'll be a motion to get rid of them in the future. foley: There's a hedgehog in the office jhawk: We're keeping a book for the news-answers moderators on the bookshelf. It's "Internet-101." mhpower: There are a number of diagrams of office configurations on the wall. Last time we discussed new office configurations at a meeting a number of people felt we should keep the office as it is. Straw poll to see weather or not it's worth while to have these diagrams? jemorris: If people want to change the office then I'd like the diagrams up so people can choose intelligently. ghudson: We should have a straw poll on weather or not we want to look at other configurations at all. rjbarbal: I don't like that idea, because I like 95% of the way the office is now but not all of it. foley: Straw poll. Are you happy with the current office config? Are you willing to put effort into changing it? [doesn't actually get polled] rjbarbal: There's a sheet on the wall asking what you do and don't like about the current configuration, people can fill that out. jemorris: Some of us want to keep it just as it is. kcr: Move to table. sepherke: Second. elliot: Don't need to table, we can just obliterate. elliot: I think people who don't want to look at the diagrams don't have to and the people who do care can come up with a few that they like and present them to the rest. Members shouldn't feel that they're required to look at the diagrams. jemorris: I want to know weather people are going to change the office around or not. rjbarbal: At some point I'll propose changing it. It might stay the same though. jemorris: straw poll: Do you want to change the office configuration from something other than how it is now? yes: 2 no: 6 abstain: many jhawk: Changing the subject, I'd like it if someone can tell me if I'll know when I'll need to move the stuff out of my drawer. Am going to be away for a while. kretch: Don't know yet. If you're going to be away play it safe and move your stuff before you go. jhawk: [to kcr] Have you made progress on getting cleaning supplies? kcr: No. jhawk: Do you expect to be on track by the time we get the carpet? kcr: Yes. jhawk: I set 3-7788 to forward on busy to the analog phone. This helps in a power outage when the digital phones lose power. Seems to have no effect on normal operation as 3-7788 is never busy. marc: I don't remember the digital phones ever losing power. jhawk: I remember several times. Office Cleaning Report: elliot: I didn't see much cleaning happen except for rjbarbal. ghudson: We have a new menu organization. Will be interesting to see if it works. kretch: Would like to emphasize that the office is a shared resource and it is your _responsibility_ to clean. If you're here and not cleaning (barring some emergency) you are being negligent. jdaniel: Physplant vacuumed two days ago. jhawk: It's also your responsibility also to kick the butts of people in the office not cleaning. MIT Computing Report: sepherke: latex2html in outland is broken, it doesn't convert graphics well. The one in infoagents works pretty well, bugs are being worked out. jhawk: You should send mail to bug-outland asking for it to be removed from outland if it's supported in infoagents. ghudson: There's a mailing list and discuss meeting "larvnet" (menelaus:/usr/spool/discuss/larvnet) for discussion about changes to cview/cmon as well as other ways of getting info from Athena. You can join if interested. Computer Services: mhpower: Webmaster people are still working on serving web.mit.edu from our server, possibly could happen before the next meeting. mhpower: I made a change to webster that makes it either work more reliably or have the set of words that make it core dump less well known. SIPB Backup Report: foley: I finally put the ASO drive back on portnoy so we can do (successful) backups. Our exabyte is now on it's way back to Exebyte. kretch: Don't have the tape, AFS will happen tomorrow. Publications Report: sepherke: All the docs under "services" (off the web page) are now in html except for inessential refrigerator restocking. jhawk: Not missing any docs in the racks.
