In attendance were Voting members: pipa amu jfmurphy jhawk elliot yak sepherke | sit Associate members: mhpower klmitch rjbarbal Non-voting members: Prospectives: "Martyn Peck" tibbetts jflynn int18 jmercado lgdean lnemzer mkb4@cornell.edu ilia tb sly | songheep jamesoey toddw Guests: Treasurer's Report: elliot: Our Treasurer is not a student anymore, we'll fix this soon. Chairman's Report: pipa: The positions of Treasurer as well as that of an EC member are open. Elections will be held next week. elliot: Sly was nominated last week, but due to consitutional requirements, the nomination was invalid. (Motions need to be made my people present at the meeting, and nominations need to be made by active voting members.) amu: Move to nominate sly for membership. [Seconded. Accepted.] amu: She has done lots to PFTGOS, specifically Webmaster duties. She has hung around alot at the SIPB, and should be a memeber by now. [Vote is 4-0-3. Motion passes.] elliot: Sly's membership election will take place next week. rjbarbal: EC needs to decide what election process to use for next week's EC elections. Office Report: sepherke: Mail was sent about the substantially revised office manual. Please read and make comments. It is located on the bookshelf, as well as in afs. int18: What formats? sepherke: There exists a paper copy hanging from the bookshelf in the SIPB office. There is also a DVI format available in: /afs/sipb.mit.edu/project/doc/office_manual-new/manual.dvi Also, feel free to ask people if you have questions regarding things mentioned in this manual, or the SIPB in general. Office Cleaning Report: klmitch: I was here Friday and some cleaning was done. Cans were not taken down. MIT Computing Report: elliot: The Housing lottery happened. People have places to live. Computer Services: lnemzer: The list of SIPB service maintainers hasn't been updated since June 1997. I would like to revise this list. elliot: There may also be a copy in the Office Manual, you might want to check there, first. mhpower: I would like to mention the awkwardness in having a list of people's usernames in regards to maintaining a service, for there are lists that people should be using to contact the service maintainers. klmitch: There are official resons to use the lists, however, it is useful to know who personally maintains a service. Mostly for contacting them to get involved. mhpower: Mail configuration on charon, which currently allows open relaying, will no longer allow this, due to a complaint generated from outside of MIT. Sending mail through charon, without being logged into it, will probably not work. sepherke: NetBSD-Athena broke alot on installation on my laptop. tb: It generally fails, although has worked in some cases. SIPB Backup Report: sepherke: Jweiss did some ufs backups. sit: Anxiety-closet was not done, but it is happening now. klmitch: I think jweiss did the penguin-lust backup, but it was not complete. mhpower: Tape overflow can be resolved by identifying unchanging files, and not backing them up every week. rjbarbal: How much space does a backup take? mhpower: It takes approximately 5G. Publications Report: klmitch: We are out of iZephyr. lgdean: I move to allocate $50 for 50 copies of iZephyr. [Seconded. White balloted.] Orientation Report: sepherke: The Activities Midway was a success and attracted lots of prospectives. lgdean: Tours on Thurday and we only have 2 tour guides. We need more tour guides. lgdean: Move to allocate up to $100 to get food and make copies of posters for tours. [Seconded. White balloted.] IAP Report: rjbarbal: This is IAP-planning planning month. sepherke: The office manual has some notes about IAP, but they are not complete. Please add to it. CokeComm Report: pipa: Coke and Candy will be purchased on Friday, thanks to tb who offered to drive. Other: tb: jhawk is lame. He left just after meeting started, just so he could get into the minutes. mhpower: A freshman had a posting of his approved for the bugtraq mailing list that consisted entirely of a quote from Theo, the head of the OpenBSD project. Other Other: pipa: Jen is back from Europe. elliot: I have a place to live. jfmurphy: Did SIPB get my postcards? [General mumbling about seeing one or two of them.] rjbarbal: Happy Labor Day. It's my first paid vacation day. tb: I know people who are retired who took the holiday, and I was offended. The meeting was adjourned at 19:55. Minutes taken and submitted by pipa.
