Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 07/9/2001


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by fyfer.

In attendance were

Treasurer's Report:
	jhawk: I asked Jeff about the laptop address/DHCP issue.
		Through benign neglect, they're going to stay around.
		They being the laptop addresses through 18.187 that
		various SIPB members have and that are registered for
		DHCP.
	marc: In general, or as a set?
	jhawk: No.
	tibbetts:  Is SIPB paying for these?
	jhawk: No.
	sly: They are not in the billing database and nobody has a good
		mechanism to find them all, so they're basically going
		to be ignored.  I don't know what this means as far as
		adding new ones.  They are working on a billing
		mechanism for DHCP.  
	jweiss: There was some reason to believe that at some point,
		work will be done to resolve non-billed hosts in moira. 
	
Chairman's Report:
	fyfer: I'll be gone for the next 2 weeks.  Please don't impeach
		me in my absence.   Some other officer will run the
		meetings. 

Office Report:
	sly: I did hardware things.  Granola now has a PCI card for
		RJ-45.  The transceiver has been removed.
		bobbi-harlow's drive and memory were put into
		bart-savagewood.  
	jweiss: Auction after the meeting.

	sly: I move to spend $50 for two monitor stands for the monitors
		currently on phonebooks.  The mac is going to be
		auctioned.
	tibbetts: Why did your replace the mac with nonfunctional phone
		books?
	sly: To auction the mac.
	jhawk: I find it implausible that we don't have something else
		to use.
	tibbetts: I think we should make jhawk hold the monitor up.

Office Cleaning Report:
	fyfer: Take down cans, bottles, etc.

MIT Computing Report:

Computer Services:
	tibbetts: VMWare isn't up yet because the linux installer
		sucks.  I think it sucks because of NFS.  I'll try to
		install again after the meeting.  
	golem: Where is the chassis?
	tibbetts: In the rack.	

	keithw: I met with jis.  He was reasonably enthusiastic and if
		the money still exists he will perhaps experiment with
		the 802.11 roaming hack over part of campus to see how
		it goes.  If it works, he may see about getting Lucent
		to integrate it into the access points.  
	jhawk: Is there any reason to believe that permission from Jeff
		to talk to Lucent would do any good?
	keithw: That's not what I said.  It may be that we could ask for
		sourcecode to the accesspoints to be able to make this
		change.
