Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 08/6/2001


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by fyfer.

Treasurer's Report:
	sly: We've ordered pool cues.

Office Report:
	srz: It's here.
	cana: I think that the clock-wire-antenna-thing fails minimum
		standards of both aesthetics and safety and I hope it
		goes away soon.
	sly: The people doing the work decided they couldn't build a 2
		kilometer antenna and went back to the drawing board.
	jhawk: Due to gross negligence on my part, we no longer have a
		soldering iron.  But, we should have gotten a new one
		anyway.  I move to spend $100 on a new one plus
		accessories.
	jweiss: Why do we need one?
	jhawk: It's useful to fix things like the CD player and the
		clock's antenna.  
	belmonte: We bought a pool cue stand; I think the soldering iron
		is valid.
        < people point out that the pool cue stand is from reuse; we
	didn't buy it>
	golem: Let's just buy it.
	marc: I'm in favor of buying it, but how did you break it?
	jhawk: I left it out there cooling off and it got GCed.

Office Cleaning Report:
	fyfer: Take down bottles.

	sly: I brought in my big magnet and erased and threw away the
		floppy disks that were to be trashed.

MIT Computing Report:
	fyfer: We get quota increases Thursday.
	cana: The dialups are becoming 9.0 based.	

Computer Services:
	sly: www is crashing, perhaps having to do with a new version of
		Apache.
	jhawk: Multics has been crashing.
	golem: For the server fantasies report: I sent mail to
		charon-maintainers.  I'd like to set up a SIPB PO server,
		mostly for my own experiments.  I'm unclear as to which
		piece of hardware I should attempt to use.	
	srz: What are your requirements?
	golem: No performance requirements.  It needs enough disk
		space.  Zero backup requirements.
	jhawk: I think this should be discussed on sipb-discussion.
	jmorzins: How about the foo server.
	jweiss: sipb-discussion or charon-maintainers seem like the best
		places.
	jweiss: Chris hasn't given charon-maintainers a lot of time to
		get back to him.
	golem: OK.  I was getting the impression that I wasn't going to
		get a response unless I brought it up in a meeting.

	fyfer: Is there a more recent version of iAthena than '94?
	jhawk: I'll find out by next meeting.
	sly: I sent mail to sendpubs a while ago, but they haven't
		appeared.  I'll try again.

	alex_c: Can we give cyruse a key so he can deliver when there
		aren't members here?
	jhawk: I think it's a reasonable idea.
	srz: We're giving the key to the role, basically.
	alex_c: It would be on a case by case basis.
	fyfer: The idea is that he would have the key in his capacity as
		cokecomm, not indefinitely.
	marc: Is it actually a problem that is going to last more than 3
		weeks?  During term, there will be more people around so
		it won't be as much as an issue.  I'm not sure it's a
		good idea to give non-members keys to the office, though
		I have no problems with cyruse.
	belmonte: I agree with marc that it sets a poor precedent.  Is
		this something he asked for?	
	alex_c: No, it's something I thought of doing.
	sly: I've noticed that any coordination about people being in
		the office is mostly verbal or over zephyr.  It doesn't
		happen by email, which might help.
	jhawk: Since there is concern, why don't we punt until term
		starts and talk to cyruse about it.
	fyfer: Sounds good.  He's gone for two weeks anyway.
