Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2007-08-06


The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by tabbott.

In attendance were

Officer Reports:
	tilia: Spend money!

	tabbott: tilia is going to be leaving us sometime soon.
	tilia: No I changed my mind.

MIT Computing Report:
	jhawk: web.mit.edu’s cgiemail service is broken.

SIPB Projects Report:
	arolfe: penguin-lust had an 80000 message mail queue.

	nelhage: We’ll be having a hackathon in the office tomorrow
		from 8PM to at least midnight, at which point we’ll be
		upgrading Linerva to etch.  You should come hack on
		stuff.
	tabbott: We’ll also be working on the sipb-xen project.

	tabbott: Debian-Athena is getting near to the point where
		we’ll transition our repository to the new packages.
		We’ve been doing testing of upgrades over the last few
		days.  That’s probably going to happen around the time
		of the Linerva upgrade.

Office Report:
	tabbott: Laptopland has a bunch of random papers on it.  That
		should get cleaned up.

	tabbott: Move to allocate $85 to aseering to get a new
		graphics card for quiche.
	jhawk: Can someone say what happened to the other two graphics
		cards?
	tabbott: There was some swapping around; the current card has
		some red fuzz.

	jhawk: Please don’t put the wrong size staples in the
		staplers.

Education Report:
	tabbott: We have various things coming up in the orientation
		time period which is three weeks away.  One is SIPB
		computer tours, and the storytime with jis.  There’s
		been some discussion about whether we should change
		this so that these are at different times.
	jhawk: It’s always seemed to me that it was difficult to
		explain why stories with jis are as interesting as
		they are.  It’s useful to have them after the tours.
	tabbott: On the other hand we had about three freshmen that
		showed up for the stories at the end.
	kchen: How was publicitly?
	jbarnold: It’s always been pretty bad.
	jbarnold: I think the other option is to start tours a little
		bit earlier and cut their length substantially.
	tabbott: Another thing we could do is try to integrate this
		into the cluedump series.  We often get a lot of
		people at the first SIPB meeting of the year, and we
		could have this as a cluedump an hour later.
	price: How exciting does the computer tour get?
	jbarnold: The computer tour part is pretty boring.
	nelhage: I thought it was cool.
	tabbott: What is the plan we want to go with?
	nim: Has anyone volunteered to organize this?
	tabbott: Excellent question.  No.
	[scheduling discussion for stories]
	tabbott: I guess I can deal with contacting him and setting up
		a time for that.
	tabbott: There’s also computer tours.  Does anyone want to
		organize that?  There’s information in
		/afs/sipb/admin/text/tours.
	nelhage: We need more hoards of awesome prospectives.  Because
		obviously the members don’t feel like doing work.
	mclamb: I’ll be willing to look into it.

	tabbott: There’s also this activities fair.  I think it’s
		August 29.

	jbarnold: Was there a first year summer mailing?
	tabbott: Yes.
	jbarnold: Were we a part of it?
	tabbott: No.
	jbarnold: That’s how I found out about SIPB.
	nelhage: I don’t remember receiving it.
	price: I received one.

	tabbott: Another thing we should do is produce documents
		advertising these events, and have them at the
		activities fair.

	tabbott: It would also be good if we had speakers for
		cluedumps.
	price: When do you think cluedumps should start?
	tabbott: Last year we started either the first or second week
		of classes.
	jbarnold: You want people to commit to activities before they
		figure out how hosed they are.

	nelhage: I appear to have not gotten hacked.
	jbarnold: We don’t know about his laptop.
	nelhage: I need a way of cryptographically identifying myself.
	asedeno: Cryptographic identification of multiple
