So that explains some people. achernya: In addition to the surprise, today we'll be having a membership election for tboning at the end of the meeting. glasgall: As an explanation for all of the old hardware, there's currently a retrocomputing exibit for CPW. After the meeting we'll be moving stuff to cluster. codetaku: Motion to allocate $250 for food. [Second and white ballot] [Motion passes] jhurwitz: I'll be running a Python Bee during CPW, pssibly with prizes, we'll figure that out later. It'll be Friday. If you're interested in helping, blanche yourself to sipb-python-bee. Also, I request $100 fr prizes and snacks. I'm not sure if the meeting is the best venue for this. For SIPB recruitment, it seems like it would be cool if there was not just a hackathon but lightning talks a day beofre the hackathon for people to present things that they might wat to work on for the hackthon so that SIPB people, and non-SIPB pople can help. achernya: There was a proposal to encorporate something like this into the general meeting. If interested, we'll start this at the next meeting. asheesh: I think this is neat but way less exciting. achenrya: Yes, it's in addition to. asheesh: When? I'm only here for eight more days. I can't make it happen before CPW. If anyone would like to help plan lighting talks and a hackathon let me know. I've done a bit with Dormbase and help organize some things. After that, I'm not sure what else to say. codetaku: As you may know, it has been an occasional tradition to name all of the computers in the office. Today, I have a different question. Give a name to all retrocomputers in the office. tboning: We need a naming scheme. I believe the current office machines are named after a comic, an actual print comic, not a webcomic. It seems appropriate to name the retrocomputers afte things that didn't exist when they were in use. So after characters in xkcd? quentin: Do xkcd characcters have names? tboning: There's Hat Guy, Meagan... Well, you wouldn't have to name them after characters. You could have maybe the SGI be nerd-sniping? achernya: What would you call the PDP-emulating RasPi in the VT100? tboning: I dont know, I'd have to look at the archive. dwilson: You said you've probably worked the most on Scripts. What major change would you make to Scripts if you thought it feasable? tboning: I'd try to make it more accessible. Scripts right now does some stuff, but really all of the initialization things are pretty arcane to use. So you get people asking "How do I do this?". "How do I get a hostname? How do I initialize my account?" so it would be nice if we had better docs and howtos. phurst: How do you like your steak? tboning: Rare. jdreed: What is your favorite and least favorite cluster? tboning: Favorite? The one in 37, because it's quiet. Least favorite? Not sure. bbaren: You've never met one you didn't like? tboning: Every time I go there I feel like I'm there for a reason. So that should give you enough information to be able to double space. My dorm has a Gutenbach printer. It works but is missing some features. iannucci: If for some bizzare reason you had 60 seconds before the fire alarm sounded, what would you save? tboning: The "save in case of fire" box, so I would have a frisbee. Most of the other stuff won't be movable in 60 seconds. achernya: What are its contents besides the frisbee? tboning: I know it has one-time pads. achernya: How? Did you open it? tboning: No, I read the minutes. kcr: Come up with a question that you could answer quickly and decicevly and ask it of someone else in the office. tboning: Luke, what type of ammunition does the Nerf Praxis take? omalley1: The little orange ones with the tops on them. tboning: Disks. omalley1: That was my first guess. In a clip. glasgall: Name one mechanic that would be on the greensheet for a SIPB member. tboning: Zephyr. iannucci: If there is a roguelike of one nature of another, what is your favorite item? tboning: Probably a cloak of invisibility. vasilvv: You have a music printer. What are other striking similarities between the SIPB office and Black Hole? tboning: We have written things on the walls. We don't really have things on the ceiling. codetaku: Should we tape an "X" on the floor? tboning: No. I guess it would be the "ask a hard computing question" spot. afarrell: The dragon starts to spew fire. What do you do before leaving the office? tboning: How much fire? achernya: Enough that the shark banana has caught fire. tboning: My thought is to part try to save the dragon, part to run out of the office. Institute poilicy is not to fight fires. There is a fire extinguisher out there. I would also close the door, and possibly trip the breakers. iannucci: Why? dove: It could be a double fire. achernya: Point out the location of bells three, two, and one and explain why one is not hanging from the ceiling. tboning: Three and two are on the ceiling, one is on the cabinet because it's too dangerous to hang from the ceiling. keithw: I move that in reverse order of seniority, each associate member either make the motion I am making now or ask the question. tibbetts: Tom, why do you want to be a SIPB member? keithw: I move that you're all really lame. tibbetts: I ignored you when I was chair, why would I stop now? tboning: SIPB's a cool place to hang out, with cool people with a lot to learn from. We run lots of very cool services, MIT really benefits from having SIPB and I want to keep that going. achernya: Congratulations, Tom. SIPB Projects Report: dove: When I get the chance, I'm going to work on making the DEFCON sign controlled by the RPi. It's easier than Arduino, and involves less BS, haivng written the voltage converter thing.. bbaren: We got the Arduino because it was easier than the Pi. dove: We don't need voltage converted before powering the RPi. dlaw: We need a thing to step the 5V up to 20 for the logic. quentin: I wish you luck. bbaren: The scanner is not working right now. This part of the scanner is having some difficult latching properly, so the scanner has decided that it's not going to scan. I'm not sure what to do about this. Someone with experience should look into it. iannucci: Last night there was a meeting with a bunch of people interested in discussion with IS&T and the collective for making more cybersecurity more better. We got together to talk about how SIPB can get involved in this discussion, if poeple are willing to have us. If you feel strongly about it, talk to me. achernya: jhawk asked me to say that he has made the project locker and there is a git repo. He apologizes that he can't come himself. iannucci: DVM Shadow is currently cursed. quentin: For the second time this month. achernya: We milestoned some tickets for the F19 release. Coming out in a month or so. They involve node.js support, and complete and utter Ruby breakage caused by the Scripts AFS patch. Other: codetaku: CPW is this week. It starts on Thursday and goes through Sunday. The events for SIPB are on the calendar. I think it's sipb.mit.edu/calendar? It would be ideal if there could be people in the office all thorugh CPW in case prefrosh come by. Come to all of the events! achernya: I'm not sure why I agreed to give a machine room tour on 11pm on Thursday. iannucci: I was hoping to make a big fuss at them, but they left. Congradulations christy and dennison. They called pthread.join. tibbetts: Doesn't that only work after you're dead? dwilson: They got married over spring break. achernya: They left. dennison had a paper, christy an exam. jdreed: We're finally getting a second color printer. Sometime betwen now and mid-July. It will probably be in the cluster. There will also be a second black and white printer moving into building 11. Also also there will be no Athena release this summer. But there will still be Standard for Raring. codetaku: There will be a panel discussion on Friday, if you are one of the speakers, please send your bio to omalley1. achernya: Do we have designated frosh? codetaku: We have two for sure, one maybe. We will have at lest two in theory but they haven't submitted things. achernya: Would the frosh in the room want to volunteer? codetaku: They pretend to be prefrosh to motivate the other prefrosh to ask questions and create an open environmnt. adehnert: Who are our desigs? codetaku: belzner and btidor. cereslee: What time is it? bbaren: 8:20. cereslee: No, what time is the panel? bbaren: 7-9. adehnert: I nominate vasilvv for membership. He did a bunch of stuff for Scripts on mediawiki and autoinstallers, also Gutenburg. And he's starting a project for archiving that will hopefully be better than discuss or pipermail. tlyu: There will be a computer security conference next week in Boston, and free CTF afterward. ctf.sourceconference.com. They might also be looking for volunteers. You can get free conference admission that way. Send mail if interested. Other Other: dlaw: SIPB Undergrad Surprise Day will be next Friday at the residence of keithw, and dinner will be served. dove: The Cambridge Science Festival is starting April 12th and running to the 22nd. I learned about this on the T. There will be cool sciencey things. And on the last day, Swapfest. iannucci: Is this timed to coincide with the annual science harvest? asheesh: I'm organizing a "how to get involved with open source" day at UMass Amherst on Sunday. If people want to volunteer and teach other people how to contribute to open source projects. Second thing, I burned Windows 2000 for the Alpha. omalley1: It's National Poetry Month.
