Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2013-04-22

The meeting was called to order at 7:30:01 by achernya.

In attendance were
Voting members: achernya bbaren dlaw omalley1 phurst pquimby
tboning sqshemet vasilvv | christy dennison dove lfaraone
Associate members: glasgall | kenta srz
Prospectives: adat belzner btidor cereslee dvorak42 jselover
        Guests:

Prospective Introductions:

Administrivia:
glasgall: Thanks for lending computers for the retrocomputing
exhibit. It was a great success. Now it's being
decomissioned. Those who agreed to take away the alpha
		and O2 please do so.
achernya: There will be a membership election today for cereslee.
achernya: Our HP Digital Document Scanner is not good at
docuemnt sending or anything else for that matter. I
looked into options to replace it. The modern verson
is 3k. Instead, there is a proposal to get an HP color
laser multifunction printer. It has a color laser
printer, a scanner, a copier, and a fax machine.
bbaren: Based on experience, I'm skeptical of it even turning
		on.
	achernya: Inkjet are terrible.
glasgall: I'd think that would say something about expected value.
achnerya: They're used everywhere on campus.
bbaren: Including the color Athena printer, which sucks.
codetaku: Can it scan and email?
	achernya: Yes.
	pquimby: Have we confimed?
bbaren: How do you enter email addresses?
	achernya: Touchscreen.
	glasgall: How do you doublespace?
bbaren: Many printers require text input letter by letter
		using the numpad.
achernya: It doesn't have a numpad, only a touchscreen.
	pquimby: Does it support LDAP?
	bbaren: Why?
	pquimby: Autocomplete.
bbaren: How much to build our own?
	pquimby: In what unit?
omalley1: Our time is too valuable.
achernya: There's been a proposal by lfaraone to get a nice
scanner, RasPi, keyboard, mosuse and monitor.
	dlaw: A proposal or volunteer?
achernya: He asked if there are Pis for this.
	bbaren: I like flatbed.
	achernya: <adf> also has flatbed.
omalley1: Do they not make this printer any more?
achernya: They do, but for 2k. We might as well buy the new
		one for 3k.
bbaren: Maybe we want to wait until our budget is about to
		expire.
achernya: Our budget is about to expire. We have May left.
bbaren: Why dont we wait until May? In case something breaks
		within the next month.
achernya: Things have already started breaking. Another three
weeks is not going to make spending better, probably worse.
pquimby: How much money do we have left?
	achernya: 8k.
om: How frequently do you use the scanner?
	bbaren: Several times a week.
omalley1: IS&Ts stuff is not sufficient? What's the utitlity?
bbaren: I won't use the scanner in the cluster for
confidential documents because it has no cable, only
email or unencrypted FTP. In my case I think having a
SIPB scanner that is somewhat more trusted is a
reasonable thing. That said, I'm graduating in a few
		weeks.
achernya: Oh, hi, Treasurer. How much money do we have left?
christy: Uh.. I'll find out. I'm new.
achernya: I said 8k-ish. Is that reasonable?
christy: Uh.. sure. I really dont know.
pquimby: Is there anywhere else on campus that can file
RFPs?. For me, the sole purpose of the scanner was for
receipts. Can one do scanning of receipts?
achernya: There're two scanners. One is ADF and one is flatbed.
christy: For SIPB, if you can't scan your reciepts I'll do it
		for you.
pquimby: I scanned them, I just haven't sent them.
christy: Give me your root password, I'll do it.
ach: We're not trying to buy the 3k one, just a $650-ish combo.

vasilvv: Book purchases. I move to allocate $35 for a book on
MySQL performance. It's handy and writetn by people with
		experience.
	[Seocond and white ballto]
vasilvv: I also move that we allocate $55 for the 2nd edition
of the 1st volume of TCP/IP <>. It's the updated
		verson of a classic book.
	[Second and white ballot]

New Prospective Introductions:
btidor: Hi, I'm Benjamin, course 6 freshman. That's it.
glasgall: How is Touchstone stuff coming along?
btidor: When I have time I'll finish it, right now theres a
proof of concept, but it's incredibly slow and you
		don't want to use it.
	glasgall: [redacted]
	jselover: I'm Jesse, I am, I think, still 18C, and I wasn't
		here for like two meetings.
glasgall: What are you interested in?
jselover: Anything that can be written in Haskell.
glasgall: You should talk to bbaren.
jselover: I should particularly because we're working on a
		group project.
adat: I haven't been here in even longer so I feel guilty. I'm
still Ada and I'm still 6.
	glas: <please take spq>
cereslee: Do you want to do work for Scripts?
	achernya: How aobut SQL?
adat: I refuse to be quotable.

SIPB Project Reports:
glasgall: THe work of porting XVM continues. We're probably not going to
make the security deadline, but not too far. price,
dvorak42, achernya, and I did some work. The webapp is happier, VNC
is happier, the general infrastructre is working on
		Precise. Debian, xen, Debian packaging,
		config-package-dev pleaes talk.
achernya: price and I got <> working. With a VM in a VM it took <543> minutes to build ssh.
	cereslee: VMception.
achernya: It's HVM on Xen on KVM. We also have chroots involved.
vasilvv: <> contnues working. Several other packages were
ported. We're blocking on clarifying which packages
are safe to punt fromm Athena forever. Also there are
some services we have to figure out.
achernya: liblocker doesn't statically link AFS. Excited.
glasgall: Barnowl is aware there is currently a bug connecting
to Google Jabber causing a long startup hang.
christy: We have USB cables, gloves, USB-to-Serial adapters,
and a hard drive or something.
achernya: whole-enchilada was found dead. and was not working
until I woke up and rebooted it twice. AFS on pancake-bunny and
miracle-cure, which I accidentally ctrl-r'd too many times, managed
to both come up and not come up.
kenta: My wild speculation is a race condition with the
		network interface versys AFS.
achernya: That's not possible because of systemd and
		dependences.
pquimby: I need a brief moment of crowdsourcing help. There
was a SIPB project I was involved with and then killed
called clockwords. It was deemed technically possible
and the socially possible failed. What do people use
to schedule things between a group of people?
	cereslee: Doodle.
	dove: WhenIsGood.
omalley1: What kind of scheduling things?
pquimby: I want to schedeule a meeting.

Membership Election:
	cereslee: I'm Ceres, I'm a junior in 6-2 switching from 20. I
met achernya freshman year, he convinced me to switch
fromm 20 to 6, then dragged me here. It took him 3
		years.
adat: What are your plans for that weapon in your pocket?
cereslee: If I need to use it. Otherwise, put it back in the
		Guild office later.
dennison: How do you double-space ninja?
	cereslee: I can't tell you.
glasgall: How do you doublespace GameTex?
phurst: What the hell is-- oh?
	cereslee: /n/n
glasgall: The ghost of Knuth will come kill you.
cereslee: Some sad, sad mutant of LaTeX
glasgall: How do you doublespace the Scripts ticket queue?
cereslee: Nag at achernya until he installs something.
dlaw: What have you done, what have you enjoyed?
cereslee: I've enjoyed killing The Scripts queue. I started
five weeks ago. It's been fun, I've leaned a lot about
		Scripts and handling user requests.
pquimby: What non-Scripts things have you done?
cereslee: I worked a little on Dormbase, then that
vanished. I'm actually interested in Debathenizing
		Fedora.
vasilvv: Implementations of which programming langes does your
		favorite text editor contain?
	cereslee: Lisp.
	vasilvv: What is your favorite?
	cereslee: emacs.
bbaren: Over the last academic year, Scirpts was DDOS'd. What
do you believe Scripts ought to do to prevent these
		attacks in the future?
cereslee: I don't know enough to anser. We probably need more people
than achernya because he is the one to wake up. I'd like
to learn more. Apart from that, I'm not sure. Scripts
is complicated, I don't really understand.
glasgall: If you were to name the next Scripts sever, what
		would you name it?
