Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2013-12-09


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by dove.

In attendance were

Administrivia:
	glasgall: I know I said bill-the-cat would be out of here
		later in the week 2 months ago, but I promise it will
		be out of here later this week.

	dove: We got the rooms for the Libre Planet event, except
		32-082.

SIPB Projects Report:

	vasilvv: Mirrors seems to no longer have problems with the
		network interface after we rebooted the server. It had
		some problems that led to partial outages.

	k_sunter: We have one more cluedump this Wednesday at 7:30 in
		4-231 about using the shell by jmorzins.
	jmorzinski: If you want to know how to use quote characters
		and double quote characters you can come.

	vasilvv: There is now a GUI client written for discuss written
		in Python thanks to jdreed. We've gone from 2-3
		discuss clients to 5, but one of them is going away.
	dove: We should keep track of the users/clients ratio;
		hopefully it'll hit 1.

	dove: There's this Science on Saturdays thing we got an e-mail
		about. jhawk sent me a personal today about it. That's
		going to happen; Sarah is leading that. If you have
		input to give, e-mail sipb-comm-k12-demos. The gist I
		got is that it's going to be hour-long presentations
		probably involving tiny little demos for kids on how
		computers work and cool techy stuff like that. This is
		a really good thing for prospectives to get involved
		in.

	tboning: This Saturday there's a Russian attack-defense type
		CTF; we will be in the office working on it. Once we
		find an exploit, we will weaponize it to attack other
		servers and steal their flags, and defend our own. It
		does require some security background.

	dvorak42: If you want to just hack on things in the office now
		that the term is going to be over, feel free to drop
		by.

	glasgall: Hopefully this week we're finally moving
		sipb.mit.edu off the Ultra 60 on the floor of SMR and
		onto Scripts. This is pretty much the our fault (the
		Scripts team).
	glasgall: I've been working on this idea for putting Athena on
		a modernized Solaris system, so I've been working on
		getting OpenIndiana running Athena. Hopefully I'l be
		able to come up with an alpha release later this
		month.

	vasilvv: ISTAB met this past Wednesday; we discussed the
		future of the Building 66 cluster with Facilities. It
		will be reconstructed, but they will be getting rid of
		the chairs you can use to roll down the hall, because
		Facilities wants the carpet to stay alive.

	dwilson: IS&T is hiring a new head, a VP. His name is John
		Charles, he's coming from CENIC, and he's worked at
		several other educational institutions, and he'll be
		starting January 1st.

	cesium: I have a barnowl for the office. *tosses barn owl at
		dove*
	cereslee: Awww.....
	dove: Want to hug it? *tosses it at cereslee* It's still
		learning how to fly.

	btidor: So it's almost Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa, and we have
		a card for IS&T we'd like all of you to sign.

	dwilson: Mystery Hunt registration is now open.

	tboning: Happy last 2 days of class.

	elubin: I defended my thesis!
	dove: This may be the first time that our IAP coordinator is a
		Ph.D.
	dove: Right now 2.009 presentations are going on; there's a
		livestream, so maybe we should check it out after the
		meeting.

	glasgall: Shameless plug: we're doing zombie 6.828 over IAP,
		you should take it. geofft will be in town to teach
		it, and that alone is a reason to take it.
