Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2024-09-16 The meeting was called to order at 19:34 by innaavo. We just covered it up and put a sticker over it. bbaren: If I may, you should contact PhysPlant under facilities. They'll paint it over for you. innaavo: Maybe it's a part of SIPB history... bbaren: It's still MIT property. scj643: I can't tell you the amount of chipped paint I've seen at Tang. bbaren: In fact, they would probably rather that they do it for you than that students do it themselves. almonds: It's not really serious right now, we can get around to it later this semester, I'm just happy to know what the process would be. rgabriel: There was someone who came from BU asking to be part of the DormDigest accounts - turns out we have a bunch of loaner Athena accounts we can pass around for them. alwinfy: For automated logins too. rgabriel: They're good for anything pertaining to authentication. rgabriel: I sent to Olu, Olu sent it to IS&T, IS&T went to Service Desk, and went straight to escalations instead of having to go up the chain innaavo: So colclark (the chair before me) submitted a request to HWOps to have a server for frat rush events hosted on a SIPB server so that he doesn't have to pay $20/month. alwinfy: $20? rgabriel: We can give him a VM like on XVM and it would just work. innaavo: Do you think that would accommodate his needs? alwinfy: Yes. rgabriel: He was asking for 256GB storage, 16GB RAM. almonds: I can reply and say "Why do you need so much?" rgabriel: I think people tend to over-ask here; even if he needs that much, it wouldn't overload Scripts. adehnert: 300 simultaneous users doesn't sound like a lot. innaavo: He says it would overload XVM/Scripts. bbaren: That would *not* overload Scripts. dtemkin: I think it's in Go. innaavo: It would be helpful if he was here in the meeting, to discuss in-person! almonds: We'll follow up with him about it. dkwabiad: I wanted to do a server request too - not sure when that is. alwinfy: There's a form on hwops.mit.edu. innaavo: The issue's that the form is for external SIPB projects. dkwabiad: We're currently hosting for Eta Kappa Nu, the people who tutor for Course 6. We're on DigitalOcean which costs $12/mo. Gabe suggested hosting on the Scripts server here instead. almonds: For sure. We can talk about that after the meeting. psvenk: Are SIPB55 cluedumps happening, or did we cancel them? turino14: They're cancelled; we'll just have the barbecue. innaavo: We were going to have alumni give talks, but there weren't any alumni interested in giving talks. turino14: Rather, it was too short notice. rgabriel: Do any of the alumni in this room want to give a talk...? adehnert: I don't think there are any topics that I would want to give a talk on. rgabriel: ...or want to nominate a fellow alum to give a talk? alwinfy: Voluntell another alum to give a talk. bbaren: Have you emailed Keith Winstein? (keithw@mit.edu) manjola: He just likes to talk... innaavo: I think just the BBQ will probably just be fine. [10-minute recess for cake consumption] [colclark walks in] alwinfy: What the hell do you need 256GB of disk for. innaavo: The question is: Why don't you want it to use XVM/Scripts? colclark: Won't fit on XVM, it's fullstack so it doesn't fit on Scripts. jmvidal: You can use lemonpepper if you need. Project Reports: andiliu: DormSoup continues. For people who are interested, i've given them some practice materials, they'll get onboarded next week. We have about ~30 daily active users, peaked at 500. The posters are working. Great opportunity to work with LLMs. almonds: We're also working on transfering from ChatGPT to SIPB LLMs. nmorgan: Project ARK continues. We sent an email to meet some people. Be on the lookout in your inbox for that. almonds: HWOps continues. We unplugged all the things we needed to for half of the UPSes, which is nice because they're from like 2006, and we can send a service request tonight to get them disposed of. skylarh: Eventful, the calendar system used for the REx schedule, continues; we sent an email to petey inquiring about their use in Admissions. innaavo: They said Guidebook is gonna be here for a while - it's 3rd party and won't be shut down. But this has enough merit that they might want to use it anyway. rgabriel: Matrix continues. We put up some posters; the ones in building 16 got wiped though, so we gotta put those back up. innaavo: Let's talk about Full Stack. We haven't really talked since last week. hpan27: Full Stack is a new club I'm starting to promote fullstack dev in the MIT/greater Cambridge area. Generally we want to help people work on the projects they want, run workshops in the region (high-schools/middle-schools), and provide resources. innaavo: We had a meeting last Sunday [2024-09-08] about SIPB and Full Stack's relationship; they've got a bit of project overlap, so the possibility was floated to have Full Stack under SIPB as a subproject. Details unclear. rgabriel: There was consensus along the EC for collaboration with Full Stack; no consensus on what form that takes. hpan27: It would be cool to have Full Stack projects be maintained by SIPB if they're FTGOS; however, SIPB is generally very established and has a distinct culture, so we don't know how comfortable they [SIPB] would be. alwinfy: Generally people will occasionally come to SIPB with projects they'd like us to maintain, and we handle this on a case-by-case basis. I don't see why we can't do the same here for each Full Stack project as they come. There's no need to prescribe a policy ahead of time if we don't need to. innaavo: What's Full Stack's view on us? hpan27: Generally pretty positive - people are pretty open to it; I think mostly it would be OK if we were our own club, or to be a project under SIPB. innaavo: How much autonomy are you seeking? hpan27: That's something we can't really answer. alwinfy: I think an open meeting would be good almonds: If I can speak on behalf of myself, I think this is a good opportunity for both sides - SIPB can use more members and interaction, for example, and SIPB can be a good platform for Full Stack. Both sides seem positive at the moment, we can pivot as needed, so I don't think we should declare any hard rules right now. rgabriel: I think the main thing is deciding whether Full Stack is an autonomous club or a SIPB project or subcommunity - these are pretty different terms. innaavo: Do we want to set a time next week? Maybe Monday before the general meeting (~6pm)? hpan27: I'd have to run it by people (the exec) but I think a When2Meet might be better. innaavo: We can post a When2Meet in public, then. almonds: The Mattermost might be a good spot to coordinate that. psvenk: Hydrant and CourseRoad continue. Do I just mail them? alwinfy: Generally mailing them is a good first step to schedule a meeting in the office - they'll onboard you and point you towards good work for newbies.
