Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 7 July 1980

	The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by William M. York.
		
	In attendance were WMY, RLL, Naha, JSL, CLS, GMP, CENT, &
	Joe Goldstone (from arcmac).
			
	Late were: ACW

	The minutes of the meeting of 30 June 1980 were read and accepted as
		corrected.  

	Treasurer's Report:

		Our total spending for Fiscal Year 1979-1980 was
		$90402.09.  So far this year we have spent $1346.44.

	Chairman's Report:

		The chairman and secretary went to see Prof. Corbato'.
		He was a little surprised that we had even heard of
		the proposed displacement of IPS by the VLSI project.
		He had also heard these rumors, but said that the
		choice of bldg. 39 was not definite.  He thought that
		it was much easier to get a little bit of space (like
		an office with adjacent terminal room) than to get a
		whole bunch of connected space (like bldg. 39).

		He also gave an encouraging perspective on the
		attitude of the Institute toward the SIPB.  He said
		that he didn't know of any negative feelings towards
		us, and that feelings ranged from strongly positive to
		neutral.

		He was interested that Dertouzos had offered the SIPB
		a seat on the Future Computing Committee.  He said that
		Dertouzos had not yet been chosen as the chairman of
		that committee and that Dertouzos did not have the
		authority to offer that seat, although in Corbato's
		opinion we definitely deserve one.

		He also said that the Gray letter was a good idea and
		offered to read it before we send it.

		He was a little skeptical of the report if the Ad Hoc
		committee for the Future etc., which he consistently
		called the "Dertouzos Report".

		The chairman is going to see Jean Bonney tomorrow
		about the future of the Spinwriter.

		J9 left a message for Bill Roberts to call her about
		getting a room for his Cobol course.

	Office Report:

		Not much.

	Computer Services:

		The entire SIPB-related hierarchy was dumped onto
		tape.

		The Student PMF was gleaned.

		The applications files have to be sorted and refiled.

		Multics came up today with 2304K (2.25 MW).  The
		Bottleneck program stopped complaining about lack of
		memory and started griping about disk controllers and
		(at one point) CPUs.

	Terminal Room Report:

		We have yet to look around at Walker, visit the
		Planning Committee, or anything.  RDM talked to some
		people in the Math dept. and to Prof. Gallegher of the
		EE dept.  Neither of them are willing to provide any
		support in our search for space.  RDM will continue
		talking to people from departments, and the chairman
		will try to make an appointment at the Facilities and
		Resources Planning Committee.

	Telecommunications report:

		Leo Ryan will let us run a cable tomorrow, and we will
		be able to move our terminals to the keypunch room
		from the Student Center for the duration of the
		Library recarpeting.

		Joanne Coley at NCCC said that they would let us make
		two simple modifications to the ADM 3A: eliminating
		the key-click and turning off the column 72 beep.
		They will still service the terminal.

	Publications Report:

		RDM picked up the Lisp Notes.  They are $2.50 per copy.

	R/O Report:

		The phone letters were mailed yesterday.

		The copies of the freshman letter were delivered on
		Tuesday to 7-103.  They were examined by the
		secretaries there and found to be appropriate for
		inclusion in the freshman mailing, at a cost of $20.
		We should send somebody over to help them collate and
		stuff on Wednesday evening.

	Annual Report Report:

		Work continues in a subdued way.  The applications
		files will be hacked Friday evening.

	Other:

		None.

	Applications:

		Jane Martini had $55 added to her Coop account.

		Shawn Wilson got a Coop account by EC vote for writing
		an instruction manual for the Wallace Astrophysical
		Observatory.  The account was given $50.

	Other Other:

		WMY and SEL announced their engagement to be married.
		They have not yet set a date for the wedding.

		Joe Goldstone is interested in becoming a SIPB member.

		Bobby Burke's birthday was the 4th.  There were
		cupcakes today in celebration.

		There was a party at the chairman's & co.   Then a
		bunch of people hit the roofs to watch the fireworks.

		Come help pull cables at 7:00 tomorrow morning.

		Cupcakes in honor of birthdays of: PAE, SS, CLS, CBF,
		BSG, TAFT, Naha, RMF, J9, BBurke, HWC, Jay, SAS.

		GMP submitted his letter of resignation today.
