Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 8 September, 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:40 by William M. York. In attendance were Jay, WER, HGA, WMY, Naha, JIS, DCP, KHS, Alan, GMP, ACW, ZRM, BARMAR, RDM, J9, DGHP, RMP, BIM, SAS, and these freshmen: David Goldfarb, Mike Semeraro (a fresh graduate student), Neil Savasta, Mike Golding, and Tony Della Fera. Late were: RLL, RK, DPC, c|, JSL, NML, and RMF. The new students were introduced to the meeting. The chairman gave a short lecture on the SIPB. RLL came in during this. The minutes of the meeting of 1 September 1980 were read and accepted as corrected. RK came in during the minutes. Treasurer's Report: This month's spending to date: $2600.01. The reason for the high rate of spending is that in the last few months we have granting money generously. This will continue to affect monthly spending for some time. Will people puh-LEEZE record all cash box transactions in the petty cash log? Any money that enters or leaves the cash box should leave tracks in the log. The Treasurer found ancient SIPB bills and a TTY interface for the PDP/8 lying in a corner of the darkroom. DPC came in during the Treasurer's Report. Chairman's Report: The chairman discussed the Gray letter for the benefit of the new people. This week we received a letter from the office of the President. It says that our points will be considered during the planning stages of the VLSI project. There was no computer orientation this year, so the chairman did not speak at it. The chairman and the secretary will try to see Corbato' again this week. c| came in during the Chairman's Report. Office Report: The office was cleaned somewhat after the Midway. Be careful with signing out and in books that you borrow and return. The bookshelf has gotten very crowded. Various plans for increasing available shelf space were discussed. The MPMs should be distributed to various dorms. Ashdown wants a set as well. RLL brought the 11 in. It can already talk to its VT52, and soon we will have a DL-11 interface so that we could down-load it from other computers. Computer Services: A user was hassled unduly by someone in the office for wanting to use the 370. People should try not to be so condescending: the customer is sometimes right. We will leave shift-1 access on, because shift-1 spending has not been all that high. Remember to warn people about the difference in rates. If we decide to turn it off later we should warn people a long time in advance. JSL and NML came in at this point. We will leave the auto limit as it is, at $200, for the time being. The Center has tripled shift-1 memory usage costs, to offset the loss in revenue from the efficiency of the new memory. Telecommunications Report: Didn't we decide to get a dormphone a long time ago? RLL will call Dennis Barron to find out what's going on and how much it would cost. Over a year ago we ordered eight of the new keyboards from Micro Switch: six for Frankston, one for us, and one for Ed Kleban. This is being mentioned again so that we don't forget about it. There are distant rumors of a vastly improved Plasma TV system down the road. There will be a demo of the Ann Arbor Ambassador terminal in action at EECS, immediately after the meeting. What about APL option on the Student Center LA36? Nothing was ever done after we decided we ought to do this. There will still be three LA36s with APL option in the EECS terminal room, so the issue is not a pressing one. There will be a terminal concentrator meeting on Wednesday, 17 September, 1980. The terminal concentrator proposal has not been making progress lately. The Dean's office still has McCormick's terminal. They will keep it for a few days yet. RDM has been talking with people at JCF about a joint terminal room managed by JCF, SIPB, and some other people as yet unknown. Publications Report: There is a new office of C. W. Beane's within easy walking distance. NUMs, Lisp Notes, and Lisp Worksheets were taken there to be copied. Gnomon prices have jumped dramatically. Someone should pick up new price lists. R/O Report: At the Activities Midway we trashed one of the Center's rolling tables. The Chairman has spoken with Roger Roach, who will see if it can be fixed. But a caster is missing. People please look for it. RMF came in at this point!!!! We had four phones at the Midway which all worked. We didn't have a handout which told about the SIPB itself, and when and what our meetings are. We should have such a thing next year. The tour happened. It mostly worked. It seemed that a lot of the participants got tired: perhaps we should shorten the tour somewhat. Tour guides should keep up better rapport with their groups. Other: Prof. Licklider wants SIPB to have accounts on the EECS Decsystem 20 to help 6.030 students with their course work. JIS says that there is already a SIPB hierarchy created and he will be giving a seminar on the TOPS-20 system in the near future so the SIPB can win. RAR gave several boxes of books to the office which containing SF, several Multics Manuals, and other items of hysterical interest. WMY talked to Dean McBay at the Midway and told her what the SIPB is and what we do. She told Bill that the Dean's Office is considering automating their room assignments and other things. We may offer them advice on the best way to do this. Applications: The Tech (Richard Epstein) for maintaining a list of advertisers and what not. The application is for learning to use Multics. Motion to give $50. Given. Jane Martini had $200 added to her Coop account. Total appropriations: $3010 without Coop Autoed: $3010 Student: $2960 370: $50 Coop: $200 Other Other: Shawn Lampron left for NYU this past weekend and will be there for 3 years. People are leaving their tail sheets from the LA120 output printer in the Student Center. We should keep the room cleaner. DCP's watch is for sale. JSL is most likely registering for a course this term which will make him a voting member. DLW should be back by tomorrow.
