Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 22 September 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by William M. York. In attendance were DCP, WER, WMY, RK, HGA, J9, RLL, ACW, GMP, JPT, BIM, c|, Jay, Naha, Barmar, and neophytes Gary Oberbrunner, Steve LeBlanc, and Mike Golding. Late were: GHuber, JIS, DPC. The minutes of the meeting of 15 September 1980 were read and accepted as corrected. Treasurer's Report: So far this month we have spent $6224.21. This is comparable to previous Septembers. Chairman's Report: The secretary called Prof. Corbato'. He said that unless the issues we want to discuss are urgent, he would see us on the 30th. The chairman sent his corrective letter to the Tech and distributed it to the other concerned parties: it was printed with an innocuous headline. The chairman will be attending the inauguration. The Institute will pay for his regalia. There is a symposium on Man vs. Computer Wednesday at 2, as part of the festivities. People please exercise restraint: keep the meetings short. Office Report: There is a new list of member's phone numbers on the wall. There are new shelves on the wall where half of the Space Blue bulletin board used to be. RLL did this. There was a lot of Chinese food left around the office. It got pretty gross before some public-minded winners cleaned the plates. Be neat. The office VT100 now runs at 4 bawdens (4800 baud). The safe/unsafe switch on the VT100 is broken. RLL is going to contact the people who do our Spinwriter maintenance to see if it is OK to do our hardware modification so that we can run the device in ETX/ACK mode without getting spurious breaks. *** USER INTERRUPT *** * * PiKA wants $50 to move their house bookkeeping system * to the RTS VAX. Given. * *** TPURRETNI RESU *** The office dataset bell does not work. RK will call it in. When you add people to the Student project, be careful to follow the application exactly. There will be more shelves in a couple of days. Computer Services: The Center is considering reconfiguring the old CPU with the two new ones, making ours a three-CPU installation. They are finagling a deal with Honeywell that gives them the CPU for free as long as they pay maintenance charges. The Student Center LA120 was turned off by JSL, for unknown reasons, and has not yet been turned on. The .25-bawden VT100 in the Student Center has a sticky caps-lock key. Besides this, only one terminal in the terminal room is losing: it is on a gronked line. We got an amazingly winning writeup in the 6.030 introductory handout. 17S03 is an unsupported freshman seminar. Prof. Bloomfield did not come and ask us about it because he did not return to the Institute until a couple of days before the term began. We have funded this seminar many times in the past. There was a motion to continue to do so, that is, to agree to fund the students in the seminar. Passed. Telecommunications Report: There was a telecommunications meeting Wednesday. Dan Weinreb volunteered to talk to Kulp about exactly when and what we are supposed to do for him in payment for the 11 and chaos interface, and also to CPR about space for terminals in the EECS terminal room. DLW talked to CPR. We cannot get space in the EECS terminal room, but might be able to get space in an adjoining room, and protect our terminals with EECS's alarm system. WER will send the bills for last term's terminal fees to the dorms. The 11 works. Publications Report: The ECS manual's section on telecommunications needs rehacking: it dates from 1975. This is urgent because we are running out of ECS notes. Penny and J9 will do this tonight. The new documentation still needs to be taken to dorms and put in the documentation racks. People who do this should merge in the addenda. Emacs handouts are back from Beanedorfe. What is the status of the new improved Emacs handouts? Eh? Other: Members please sign up for office hours. A chart is on the blackboard. Freshmen are encouraged to sign up. An announcement from the UROP office says that Prof. Hammer is looking for a student to do text editor pedagogical research. Prospective member Don Abrams has not been around the office at all this year. If you see him encourage him to hang around the office. DCP has created a program on ITS to merge PRESS and ARDS files into a new PRESS file. The local student chapter of the ACM has spun off a student microcomputer hacker's club. They want to start a micro network. This raises a lot of issues about data communications and dormlines which are too boring to list here. The PDP/11 has 28K words of working memory. Joe Goldstone (JPT) was nominated for membership in the SIPB. J. Spencer Love was elected to active full membership of the SIPB, by a vote of 10 to 1. Applications: ADP fraternity wants $100 for developing a phone billing program. Given. David C. Lingelbach wants $100 to use CASCON for a project for Prof. Bloomfield. Given. John Ruggiero wants $100 for the MIT Scuba Club to do their mailing list in RDMS. Given. David A. Chan wants $50 to hack mailing lists for the Chinese Students Club. Given. Alfred W. Chock Jr. was given a Coop account by EC vote, and started with $100. Eric Reiner for the Debate Society, wants $75 to do text processing. They have a small budget, all allocated already. Given. Total appropriations: $2360 without Coop Autoed: $1885, all Student. To Meeting: $475, all Student. Coop: $100 Other Other: HIC may perhaps possibly become a student again. J9 was locked out of her office, and called the Campus Patrol to let her in. The patrolman who came by let her in without asking for any identification whatsoever. Beware. The Concourse Computer Center got an 80M disk drive and will have UNIX up in a couple of weeks. We should put the necessary links in the Student search rules so that they can use Gosling's (University of Calgary's) Pascal (PYXYS). This Pascal seems a little marginal, but BIM says that he is getting Grenoble Pascal sometime soon. JIS came in at this point. The special effects TV show mostly featured Star Wars effects but there was one sequence from 2001. Everyone in the office sang Strauss (the waltz one, not the Do-Sol-Do one).
