Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 29 September 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by William M. York. Late were: Mike Golding, Gary Oberbrunner, Jay, DCP The minutes of the meeting of 15 September 1980 were read and accepted as corrected. Given. * *** TPURRETNI RESU *** Steve LeBlanc came in during the User Interrupt. Treasurer's Report: The September accounting period ended on the 26th. Approximate spending for the month of September is $7440.28. This is $2000 more than last year. So far this month (fiscal October) we have spent $883.37. This is in two days. We are spending a lot of money on Coop for storage. A system will be designed (by CAH, mainly) to prepare storage bills for individual Coop users, and to incrementally modify the Coop PMF accordingly. Chairman's Report: The Chairman attended the coronation of President Gray. At the luncheon he sat at Prof. Corbato''s table. *** USER INTERRUPT *** * * Robert W. SIPB membership cards expire on 1 October. Office Report: The new shelves shpeak for themshelves. J9 alphabetized things. The solder-sucker which RLL borrowed from EECS has vanished from the office. You get lasting recognition and respect if you find the solder, sucker. The safe/unsafe switch on the VT100 is flaky. In unsafe position it is always unsafe. In safe position it is sometimes unsafe. Computer Services: We will be able to give Grenoble Pascal only to SIPB users. We will keep it in our own hierarchy. Honeywell had an announcement in Electronic news, describing Emacs and the mail system in an incompetent and funny way. Telecommunications Report: DLW talked to Kulp a couple of weeks ago and determined that Kulp did not know what he wanted the SIPB to do in exchange for the 11 and chaos board. RLL talked to Kulp more recently. He and Eric Ostrom will figure out what needs to be done on the Chaosnet. No one has done anything about the graphics terminal idle display. Terminal Trouble Reports are now in the back of the Log Book. People should use the log book. One line to the student center is still frotzed. ZBT's coupler does not work. It used to work, and no longer does. From this we deduce that it has stopped working. We now have two nonworking acoustic couplers, and ought to replace them. We will buy one AJ 245 acoustic coupler or equivalent, and investigate the status of the ZBT coupler, which really ought to be working. What happened to the Vadics that we were going to order? How come we never buy the things we say we are going to buy? Steve LeBlanc bravely "volunteered" to help the treasurer get around to such things. *** USER INTERRUPT *** * * Deran Dinjian, an alumnus, wants to use the 370 so * that he can listen to 15.564, and also learn about * statistical packages. We anticipate trouble * in interfacing him to the 15.564 bureaucracy. Since * he seems mostly interested in just learning about * computers, we voted him $50 on Multics and deferred * the 370 portion of the application until we can get * better information from the 15.564 TAs. * *** TPURRETNI RESU *** Xerox has an amazing new bit-raster printer, the 5700, which is so amazingly winning that the center is considering buying one and attaching it to Multics. Let's sell them the Spinwriter fast before it becomes obsolete. The office dataset was replaced. Publications Report: We are almost out of NETS. We will get 100 copies from Beane. The ECS documentation is being worked on by Penny and ACW. JSL is still working on the new Emacs handouts. Someone should hassle him to keep working on it. Other: People please write up their long distance calls on the list on the wall. IAP forms must be filled out by 15 October. Bernie should be contacted about the Lisp Course. ACW and Alan seek help on Programming Contest planning. We have to make arrangements with the Center for their IAP courses. Jay and Barry are going to co-chair the SIPB's IAP activities. Maybe we will teach a Multics course this IAP. BIM and DLW expressed interest. Penny's article about the SIPB came out in the Center's Bulletin. Charlie Hornig is back. Some members and prospectives were coerced into signing up for office hours. Elections: Joe Goldstone wants to become a member of the SIPB because he needs a place to park his flamingo. He was elected unanimously. Steve LeBlanc was nominated for membership in the SIPB. Mike Golding was nominated for membership in the SIPB. Charity Stafford was nominated for associate membership in the SIPB. Applications: Barry Margolin wants $100 for resume, Emacs extensions, and learning ALM. Given. The mailing lists should be moved back. There was a symposium on Man vs. Computer as part of the coronation ceremonies. Minsky's talk was sort of a zoo. It was entited "A Future So Bright You Will Need Sunglasses." The Dehns were in town for the coronation. The chairman and Ed Schwalenberg are planning a slide show Sunday at 2:00.
