Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 6 October 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by William M. York. In attendance were NML, WER, Jay, RLL, WMY, DCP, Naha, Ed, HGA, ACW, GMP, J9, c|, JPT, RDM, CAH, Alan, RK, GHuber, and some users. Late were: SAS, Barmar, Gary Oberbrunner, Steve LeBlanc, Mike Golding, PAE, JIS, and DLW. The minutes of the meeting of 29 September 1980 were read and accepted as corrected. Given. * *** TPURRETNI RESU *** PAE came in during the User Interrupt. Treasurer's Report: Last month's spending was $7725.61. So far this year we have spent $20602.81. This is about $5000 above last year's spending level. So far this month (fiscal October) we have spent $3033.86. Shift one only accounts for $158, but disk storage is $1300, or 40% of total spending. Someone should get in touch with SCEP, the prime offender in Student storage use, with 1346 records. The Spinwriter has not yet been sold to the Center. Get on the stick. Coop was allowed to run out of money accidentally over the weekend. Chairman's Report: The Chairman and the Secretary want to talk to the Czar on Tuesday. The major thing that we learned was that Corbato' wants to cut Multics rates significantly. We talked about terminal concentrators and terminal rooms. Corbato' was encouraging but offered no tangible support. The Czar is concerned about Multics' lack of video terminal support, and is going to talk to Charlie Clingen at CISL, about it. We discussed nbdd storage and the high cost of storage in general. We explained why nbdd was a screw. We told him about the Coop project, and he was impressed. The Chairman got a call from the Provost, Francis Lowe. He invited the Chairman to serve on an advisory committee for computing. It was noted that the Vice Chairman is hardly ever at meetings. JIS and DLW came in during the Chairman's report. Office Report: When taking applications please ask for middle initial. Also make sure that the password is eight characters or less, lower case alphabetic. If it is upper case, rewrite it in lower case and make sure he knows it. There is a mild drawer shortage. People should clean their output bins. Computer Services: CAH has improved the graphics software for the ADM 3A, fixing various misfeatures. He also modified the weekly to give more information on storage usage. Please put Coop cutoffs in $ddd.cc format so that CAH's disk charging tool can work. Soon we will be able run the text queues on two terminals simultaneously. Telecommunications Report: Someone (John Lupien) came in from Bexley today. They want a terminal, and will put it in their game room. We are a little concerned about the security of Bexley's basement. We will ask them for a standard application letter. Since the standard contract only hold the lessor responsible for damage or theft up to $500, we stand to lose a couple of hundred dollars if the terminal is stolen. We should be very sure that they keep it locked up. We will order a dataset for them. Nothing that we were supposed to order has been ordered. We are waiting to see the bidirectional forms tractor for the Spinwriter. We were supposed to get one as a loaner: somehow this never materialized. Elections: Charity Stafford regrets that due to lack of time she must decline her nomination for associate membership. Steve LeBlanc and Mike Golding have been nominated for membership in the SIPB. Mike ("MG") Golding wants to become a member of the SIPB because he is power-mad. He was elected, 10 for, 3 against, 2 abstentions. Steve ("Steve") LeBlanc wants to become a member of the SIPB because he wants to psychoanalyze us. He was not elected, 9 for, 4 against, 2 abstentions. Steve was invited to continue hanging around and learning office procedures: he will be voted on again in two weeks. Gary Oberbrunner was nominated for membership in the SIPB. The election will be in two weeks. "In two weeks" means on Monday, 20 October. Publications Report: The ECS manual was taken to Beane II. It will be ready Wednesday. Penny is working on the ECS handout. IAP Report: The SIPB IAP committee got 54-100 for the Lisp Course. The committee also sent in a form about the Multics course. The advertisement asks interested people to contact the office. Someone really should talk to Dorothy Corbett about IPC IAP courses. We hope to administer their projects this year. Other: PAE brought some course notes about an EVALQUOTE Lisp being taught at North Carolina State. Next week's meeting will be at 6:30 instead of 7:30, because of the Asimov lecture. Applications: Thomas and Ludwig Maier's applications were hopelessly fouled up, signatures exchanged, etc. They were deferred for more information. Benson I. Margulies wants $75 for text processing for 7.011. Given. David Goldfarb wants to maintain administrative databases for the Kosher Kitchen. Given $60. David C. Someone at LOTS said that putting terminals in dorms is an amazing loss. We disagree with his opinion. RK wants to have an expedition to New York the weekend before Hallowe'en. There was a pair of articles in the Globe about Lisp and Symbolics, Inc. Weird. There was a SIPB slide show.
