Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 3 November, 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by Richard L. Lawhorn. In attendance were WMY, RLL, DCP, RK, ACW, GMP, JPT, RDM, GCO, MG, BIM, c|, Alan, Naha, Jay, Barmar. Late were: Steve, JSL, DPC, Soley. The minutes of the meeting of 27 October, 1980 were read and accepted as corrected. Steve and JSL came in during the minutes. User Interrupt: The Chinese Student's Club, represented by David Chan, wants $75 further to print mailing labels. DPC and Soley came in during the user interrupt. Treasurer's Report: Our total spending for the fiscal month of October is $11793.95, of which the Student project accounts for $8600. The Student project spent $3000 on storage this month. Last year's October spending was $6000. Chairman's Report: The chairman has not yet talked to Wes about the hardware proposal. The ACM held their programming contest. They lost eight ways from Sunday. They had this LSS which was designed to protect them from state-of-the-art techniques. Well, the names of their programs were not in the LSS. Eventually they were forced to tell their users that they had to call their programs certain things. Barmar helped them out when when they ran out of quota. The person running the contest could not touch a terminal because it was the Jewish Sabbath. The chairman's upstairs tenants have finally moved out, and Rob and Dorothy are going to move in over the weekend. Office Report: Naha gave a demonstration of how to properly dispose of Coke cases. People should really make a better commitment to keeping the office open during office hours, especially on Wednesday. The zoology of the office refrigerator is getting more interesting by the moment. Someone should really clean it out. Penny made noises that she might. The bidirectional forms tractor seems to be winning. There is a new office hot plate. There are new Spinwriter instructions on the wall behind the Spinwriter. User Interrupt: Douglas Swanson wants computer time to work on his UROP project in industrial economics. Things are not completely clear, but he is going to be using packages, apparently loaded off tape. This looks like a 370 application. Deferred to discretion of office, while Mr. Swanson finds out more about what he needs. Computer Services: There will be a cleanup of the Student post office tonight at about 11. Should JJS continue to be the only person allowed to hack the Coop project? It was moved to make *.SIPBADMIN the project administrator for Coop. Failed. The Monthly blew out. The culprit was the tool for charging Coop users for storage. It has been patched and will be fixed soon. The User's Meeting is still scheduled for Tuesday, 25 November. It will be held in 10-250 but this may change. Regardless, the meeting should be announced soon. SIPB_user_3 was given out to a student from Northeastern to read a tape. The password should be changed. SIPB_user_1 was given to Tyler.Student who forgot his password. The password should be changed. If you are in the office in the morning, try to run the queues. Some people seem to take our Mr. Nice Guy policy for granted, with regard to the quality queues. Remind them that we are being nice, and not to learn to rely on less than 24-hour turnaround. Telecommunications Report: The bidirectional tractor-feed seems to win. There was a motion to keep it. Passed. There are many problems in the Student Center terminal room. Perhaps the problems are due to terminals, perhaps to lines, perhaps to the FNP. Dial-up 88311 is not working yet. Publications Report: Penny collated addenda into the Student Center Terminal Room copies of the documentation. KHS is supposed to find racks for the dorms that do not have them. There is a runoff document that should be given to people who need to know a lot about runoff. IAP Report: There will be a Multics course curriculum meeting on Wednesday, and a Lisp course meeting the Wednesday after that. The Center is showing disturbing signs of starting to lose as usual with their IAP courses. We will try to straighten them out before it is too late. We must determine who we will fund to take Center courses. The Contest will occur. The nature of the Contest is as usual very secret and mysterious. User Interrupt: The Black Students in Electrical Engineering, represented by Kirk Holmes, want $100 to do mailing lists, reports, etc. Given. Special Move-To-Terminate-All-Services Report: At this point there was a fire on the first floor of Building 39 and the building was evacuated for about half an hour. This attempt to clean the Student hierarchy was unsuccessful, and the meeting was reconvened at 21:30. Other: People should remember to save the orange box in the Ancient Truths drawer, in case of fire. There was a short discussion about the funding of mailing labels. There are IPS raffle tickets on sale for a quarter each. Applications: The ASA wants a Coop account to edit a summary of activities. Given. Frank Field had $40 added to his Coop account. Jane Martini had $500 added to her Coop project, as of 3 October. James Turner had $50 added to his Coop account. Coop: $590 Other Other: This afternoon Naha found out about how to use tape_ibm from SAS. It was staggering. We looked at Reagan's Brain in Stereotaxic Coordinates. RK bought a 1981 VW Rabbit.
