Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 10 November 1980

	The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by William M. York.
		
	In attendance were JPT, Soley, WMY, DCP, Naha, c|, ACW, HGA,
		PAE, GMP, RK, BIM, Alan, RDM, J9, MG, Barmar, Anita.
			
	Late were: JIS, DPC, GCO, JSL, CAH.

	The minutes of the meeting of 3 November 1980 were read and
		accepted as corrected.

	Treasurer's Report:

		Total spending this month to date is $4713.47, of
		which Student accounts for $3790, of which storage
		accounts for $1300.

		Spending for fiscal October was exactly $11985.33.
		Total spending this year is $31000.

		The new Multics rates have been approved.  They will
		go into effect when the next billing period begins, on
		25 November.  The new shift definitions are: Shift
		One, 0900-1700, Monday - Friday: $4/hr connect time.
		No HSLA, no resource charges.  Shift Two, 1700-0000
		Monday - Friday: $3/hr.  Shift Three, 0000-0900 Monday
		- Friday: $2/hr.  Shift Four, 0000-0000 weekends and
		holidays, $2/hr.  Absentee now only charges for CPU,
		not for memory.  IO daemon, unchanged.  Telenet and
		TYMNET surcharge: $3.50/hr all shifts.  Hardwired
		lines are $50/mo.  Disk Storage: .30/rec/mo, half the
		old rate.  NBDD rates are unchanged.  Tape rates are
		unchanged.

	User Interrupt:

		Haralambos Panagopoulos lost a lot of money (about
		$400) demonstrating a Macsyma bug to a Center
		consultant during shift 1.  He was given 33.36
		instantly so that he could keep hacking.  

	Chairman's Report:

		Wes still has not yet said anything about the hardware
		proposal.

	Office Report:

		The office was waxed.

		Book signout lists are being redone.  Please check to
		see whether you owe books.

		The shelves next to the door are very crowded.

		We are getting new SIPB envelopes from APO.

		When oh when is the SIPB's new keyboard going to
		arrive?  Are we going to keep it when it does?  If
		not, when are we going to get a keyboard with a
		working "?"?  We have already paid for a new keyboard.
		We will instead try to get a working old terminal and
		sell the new keyboard, if it ever arrives, to LLL.

	Computer Services:

		The SIPB's text-processing abbrevs delete the source
		file in pathological cases.  It seems to be the fault
		of runoff, which does not hack names correctly.

	Telecommunications Report:

		Terminal letters have started to trickle back from the
		dorms, and there is a file for them in the
		Telecommunications drawer.

		We have received TTY 43 paper and Spinwriter paper.

		There are LOTS of Spinwriter ribbons in the darkroom,
		in a box up against the far wall.

		ZBT's TTY 43 has a broken connector.

	Publications Report:

		NETS were sent to Beane.  BIM and ACW are working on
		the NETS.

	IAP Report:

		This Wednesday there will be a meeting for people
		interested in the Lisp course.  The meeting will be at
		7:30 p.m.

		Last Wednesday there was a meeting to discuss the
		Multics course.  The Multics course will cover:  the
		Multics programming environment, storage hierarchy,
		acl's, abbrevs, writing commands, and other topics.
		Suggestions are welcome.

		The Multics course will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays
		at 4 in 39-400.

		Maybe we should offer offer a word processing
		mini-course.  We will try to do this.

		The Center has agreed to delete the $10 charge for
		their IAP courses.  They will take a form from each
		student, and we will process the forms.  In particular
		we will register the people under their own names, not
		weird special personids.  Soon we will find out which
		courses are being offered on the 370 and which will be
		offered on Multics.

	Other:

		There will be a meeting of the CCE on 20 November.
		They will discuss networking plans, educational needs,
		terminal needs, lecture room display...  The meeting
		will be at 9 a.m.

		The Plasma TV system has changed a little.  Only eight
		connections are allowed to MC, for example.

		The User's Meeting will be held in 9-150 on Tuesday,
		25 November, at 7:00 p.m.  We need to work on
		publicity, agenda, etc.  For publicity, we can do an
		LSC slide, make posters, and so on.  Barmar will work
		on the slide.  DPC will work on a drop poster, Gonzo
		will organize the meeting itself.

	Applications:

		Jonathan Koch wants $100 more for hacking lab reports
		and 6.034.  He has already had $250.  Given.

		The Lebanese Students Club, represented by Majjid
		Ibrahim, wants $50 to do "mailing lists".  This
		probably means mailing labels.  Given.

		Haralambos Panagopoulos had $150 EC, $200 to meeting.
		The $200 given at meeting includes the $33.36 given as
		an emergency measure.  See above.

		Michael Abramsky had $200 given by EC vote.

		Total appropriations: $2765 without Coop
		  Autoed: $1965, all Student.
		  To Meeting: $450, all Student.
		  EC Vote: $350

	Other Other:

		This Wednesday is the semiannual MIThenge.

		Peking Duck Orgy Tomorrow.

		GMP had a birthday a few days ago.

		Penny is selling appliances and left the office's
		number with Tech Talk.  Be ready to take toasted calls.

		There was a party at the Beauty Parlor for those
		leaving the country due to elections.

		Alan is looking for a job.
