Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 1 December, 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by William M. York and Richard Mark Soley. In attendance were GCO, Naha, Soley, Barmar, DCP, HGA, c|, JIS, RLL, CAH, RK, Lamson, GMP, WMY, Jay, Steve, JCG, DPC, RDM, and 1 user. Late were: BIM, ACW, WER, and CWH. The minutes of the meeting of November 24, 1980 were read and accepted as corrected. Treasurer's Report: CAH reports that we spent roughly $300 per day for the last 5 days. Last month's spending was 11,610.42. New phone bills are in, please claim your calls. So far this year we have spent $44198.56. Chairman's Report: The chairman received the minutes of the CCE meeting and was displeased with the incompleteness of their minutes. Moses sent Bill a reply to his mail, asking if the SIPB wanted the 11/45 or not. Bill sent a reply saying that we do not want it, but we would like to see the computer available to students. Office Report: c| says KTOC. The office is a complete mess. People should try to be neater. The large box in the office contains 4 keyboards and 7 cases that are being shipped to LLL. BIM and ACW came in during the office report. The old magazines have been stored away in the darkroom. Computer Services: It is proposed that we stop creating Student maps each month. CAH will send mail to SIPB and if there is no strong objection he will stop making the maps. Our Spinwriter does indeed have an obsolete CPU board. The form for space at the ASA Spring Midway has been completed and should be sent in. We should copy the form before sending it in. In fact, people should make copies of all outgoing official correspondence. We do have permission to use the Xerox machine on the fourth floor for official office purposes. The Users' Meeting happened. Only about half a dozen users showed up but those that did had a fair amount to say. We should continue to hold these meetings every term, improve our publicity, and be more dedicated to making it a success. There was a certain lack of support from members: the work devolved on a very few people. The users were interested in terminals being made available for overnight loan, more graphics terminals, and graphics hardcopy devices. In addition they wished that IAP course labs were better organized and better staffed. Don't promise quality output in less than 24 hours from the time that it is queued, unless you are willing to run the queues yourself. Telecommunications Report: Wes Burner called the office needing some help. A company called Nercom has just gotten a new word processing system. Maybe this system will replace a Bedford System 75, and in this case the 75 (a high quality printer) may be donated to MIT via Wes. A person from the Sloan School came into the office wanting to borrow an acoustic coupler. He was very confused and didn't really understand what he wanted. He needs it next week. We can loan him one if we can figure out what is going on. We will get a signed letter assuming responsibility before loaning it out. WER came in at this point. The HSLA boards have come in. Soon they will be installed. In the meantime there is one free line upstairs, which RLL had connected to line c.h131. This we will plug into the Spinwriter tomorrow. The VT100 had a cable problem which was repaired. Its dataset now gets no dial tone. It has been called in to the phone company. The Teleray problem was traced to a bad dormphone wire and fixed. All the Telerays in the Student Center now work. Ed Kleban does not want the Kulp Keyboard that he originally thought he wanted. The Vadics were finally ordered. 12 weeks delivery. A blue box was also ordered. We have still even now at this moment not heard about our hardware budget. The Chairman and Treasurer will talk to Wes this week about that. Publications Report: More yellow form B's have been printed. The new SIPB "gold [reference] cards" will not reduce well in their present form. They will be rehacked. Lisp Course posters will look like last year's. Emacs introductions are supposed to be hacked by JSL who apparently isn't. Someone should encourage him. The form of the rate chart is very good, but the execution leaves somewhat to be desired. It will be redone. Naha and DPC will rehack it. Or someone will. IAP Report: The new bulletin has a SIPB section which people should read, and also announces that the Center's IAP courses will be free. We will have the IAP project for our contest and for the Center's IAP courses. We should do intensive administrative work on the Lisp course. Barmar and Jay are in charge of this. People should volunteer to help with Lisp course lab sessions. This involves being up in the Course 6 terminal room and answering questions and helping losers. The Multics course needs to be planned more carefully as well. Jay will start making his weekly trips to the fourth floor to pick up registration forms of people who want to take Center IAP courses. Lisp Course signup has been abolished as unnecessary. Other: CAH did a spot check of our 370 users. None of them had a minidisk read password of ALL. CAH will fix unspecified ones to be ALL. Our charges on the 370 were 90% for storage last month. Concourse is now running Unix. They need tapes and paper. Tapes are $10/reel, paper is $24/box. They should look for outside funding before asking SIPB for these supplies. c| sent a list of SIPB members to Technique. Graded office quizzes were returned. People who want to use the JCF VAX should be referred over to JCF, who have said that they may occasionally fund needy users. Contact Doug Wilson, x3-2041. Applications: Michael Schiller (JIS's brother) wants a Coop account. He is not otherwise connected to MIT. Given. Ronald C. Tyler was given $50 by EC vote (over the auto limit) for text editing. Dale Gordon got a Coop account and had $200 added to it. Sandra Miller got a Coop account and had $200 added to it. CWH came in during applications. Total appropriations: $1765 without Coop. Autoed: $1715, all Student. EC vote: $50, all Student. Coop: $400 Other Other: RK was at CMU in Pittsburgh, and warns people who are going to have interviews at the placement office with companies to arrive early in the morning, when the interviewers are not burned out. WER donated many jumping disks reading "MASS TOOL AND DIE" to the office. UNIX is up and running at the Concourse Computer Center. Scientific American photographers were up to photograph the cube on the Lisp Machine. There was Thanksgiving. WMY, SEL, J9, ACW, and JPT went to Detroit. WMY saw Kleban in Ann Arbor. There was a pastry expedition in New York. Parks paltered. GMP is maintaining Emacs until February. It was a bad weekend for cigarette machines. The one in the building 39 vending area was inverted.
