Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of December 15, 1980 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by William M. York. In attendance were: Bill York, Penny Berman, David Plummer, Jay Pattin, Barry Margolin, Ronald Mabbit, Richard Lawhorn, Gary Palter, David Kushner, J Spencer Love, Benson i Margulies, and Greg Huber. Late were: Richard Kovalcik and A Large White Rabbit (holding a large pocket watch). The minutes of the meeting of 8 December, 1980 were read and accepted as corrected, after they were found on Multics. Dave Christman came in at this point. Treasurer's Report: The treasurer says that we spent $7024.32, $1543.73 disk. We are spending as much on shift one as two. DCP says that CAH says that we are spending the same this month as last month. Everyone noted that the spending will go away next week. Bill and RDM argued that the additional spending will not force us to overspend. "We get more for our money," quoth RLL. Chairman's Report: Chairman visited Wes/Corby Tuesday. There will not be a Christmas this year, i.e. there will be no hardware money. We depended on Wes reserving money for us on the "usual" hardware-every-other-two-year basis, and did not submit a proposal early enough. Wes did not budget the money, and so we can't get any. The Chairman wants to go talk to Corby and then Lowe to try to get money directly. RLL discussed a proposal for terminals to the ADB (activities Development Board) for one terminal per dormitory. RLL & BIM will make a proposal for their late January meeting. The Chairman approves. RDM wants to know about strings (attached). Steve LeBlanc came in at this point. The Chairman knew we were in trouble when Wes agreed with Corby that we were winners. Wes may get us a System 75 daisy wheel device, and a datamedia display. We don't really want them. Corby thinks the center should try to run Delphi's 11 or let us run it to practice with Dec equipment. We are leery, we like Multics better, and don't want to lose our other funding. Wes thought the idea was marvelous, proving the point. There was a CCE meeting on word processing. Wes show-and-telled the different WP systems in use at MIT. A detailed description of the WP center in Building Nine was given, which was so awful that the meeting in general retched. As people in the meeting discussed all the things that people want the Chairman kept telling them that Multics could do it, but it is not clear that they were listening. A person from Sloan opined that WP and high quality output were useless, and Nick Negroponte told him off. In general, WP at the institute is a zoo, with 10,000 people running off in 20,000 directions. There were examples of every kind of manufacturer of WP imaginable. See more notes in correspondance folder. User Interrupt: Randy Race wants Coop for his thesis. He will pay cash. We discussed the net cost, etc. 6.1 will no longer give out thesis text processing money. Several folks wanted to send him to EE, but we will approve. Motion to take the man's money passes. He may use some EE time to save $$'s. Harold Ancell materialized around here. There is a CCE meeting 22 December, RLL will go in the Chairman's place. The CCE meeting on student computing will be postponed until there are students. Office Report: Naha: (having come in at some point) points out that the blue cards are flying around, and should be rubber-banded. OINK OINK. Penny says that our new envelopes are ready, will cost us $50 from APO letterpress. Penny should inspect the envelopes. DCP: do we have a new keyboard? New grinnel hardware may give us no other choice. Heavy metal, Computerworld, Discover? The bad bill for Discover has been payed. A disorganized outburst on subscriptions followed at this point. HGA is accepting contributions for Heavy Metal. Actually, HBD is accepting contributions, but HGA will shake folks down after the meeting. On second thought, you should put contributions in cashbox. Should we subscribe to computertrash? Sure. G&C will pay for it. Yet another raffle to benefit starving operators. Actually, we have no idea where the money goes. Tickets are 4/$1.00. RLL & BIM rearranged the teleray. Complaints will be ignored. Computer Services: The "PRINT IT NOW___" phenomenon has gotten bad, according to DCP. The Chair points out that individual members should continue to take responsability for any promises they make. There were be a 250 page monster report to print tonight?! It is probably a good idea for the involved secretary to come babysit it. The LA120 was broken. There was a MOTD, but students don't see motd's. We should put up student motd's when things of importance happen. HGA: should the Spinwriter be logged in all the time? Yes. RLL is going to find out about a quiet cabinet for the spinwriter. The CPU board is replaced, times roman works. If the people from Burton want to use the Spinwriter again, tell them that we will only do it one more time. They should dial Multics with their apple and queue the requested files. The daemon stops from a FNP bug. A fix may be along soon. We should go to ETX/ACK for the duration. new_user won't create the directory any more. Does the spell program work? Steve claims not always. JSL will investigate. Barry said that either the SIPBTEXT tools should stop making shriekname'd segments, or we should give everyone access to the student runoff pool. The tools will be fixed. THE TOOLS WILL BE REWRITTEN OVER IAP. Richard Lamson came in at this point. The LA120 is fried. Telecommunications Report: The Baker House DecWriter is in "storage" in Building 11. In reality, it is on loan to Concourse. JSL investigated terminals in the bldg. 38 terminal room. He talked to RAR and Leo. We would be able to avoid the line charge only if all (MIT or not) users of Multics would have equal priority. If EE or the SIPB were to pay a surcharge, they could set the priorities. Multics Gateway to Chaos won't be with us in time. Could dispatch be open all the time? (1) still not enough terminals, (2) Leo dosen't seem to want to. But Corby could "ask" Wes to aquire terminals and open the facility. Roger finds it hard to believe that Leo is so substantially against it. Perhaps Corby went to Ryland to avoid stirring this up with Wes? The chairman should talk to Corby. RLL moves that SIPB should pay the line surcharges, so we would get to make our users special. Wires are no problem at all. Chairman points out that he has already read this particular riot act to Corby, and that we should go ahead and get the lines, and keep control of the terminals. The motion to get 4 lines @ $50/month for the EECS terminal lines from the budget was seconded, and passed easily. Don't rush too hard, we won't run wires till January anyway. Telephone man thought that New House was W7. It took the chairman some time to discover it was New House. Publications Report: 40 copies of the lisp notes for Oakland University?! Should we send them a camera-ready master instead? (They have a Multics) Someone must call them and see if they want a master. Penny will see to all of this. The Notes will be expanded to include TOPS-20. Gold Cards are ready. They should be picked up. People should get the cost in advance if they can, but it isn't always possible. But you can always call ahead. New (New Multics Rates Poster) will be made soon. Penny has prices for Manual Racks. IAP Report: Jay will do the Multics registration. No one understands 370 stuff. We have to find out how OPEN works on TOPS-20. Discussions are underway about the correct Lisp environment for TOPS-20. Are there strings in TOPS-20? Can we document it at all? This will be investigated. Other: GMP: file transfer to Phoenix with HASP and IMFT works, without a neccessary cable?
