Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 12 January, 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:40 by William M. York. In attendance were David Kushner, WMY, Barmar, RK, DCP, ACW, RLL, Steve, JPT, GMP, Naha, c|, Alan, Lamson.SysMaint, J9, RDM, BIM, JSL, User. Late were: JIS, Jay. The minutes of the meeting of 5 January, 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. JIS came in during the minutes. User Interrupt: William H. Harper, in dire straits because Sloan cut off his thesis funding, used about $13 of Student money for his thesis. He wants a Coop account and has $100 to shovel into into it. Taken. Treasurer's Report: Spending so far this month is $2912.19, of which $2096 was spent on Student, 46% of which is storage. The cleanup has not yet been done. Chairman's Report: The Chairman has not yet written the $300K/year proposal for Hulsizer. Hulsizer is the chairman of the CCE, which can make recommendations to the provost. There's a meeting with Wes tomorrow to come up with a proposal to use Multics as interim word processor. Last week we mentioned the working committee of the CCE to look into word processing. Hammer may head this committee. John Gonzalez has been inactive for a long time. He is a member of the EC. The constitution stipulates that the EC should consist of nine active members. There was a short, instructive, and amusing discussion of the origin and nature of the EC. It was moved and passed to have an election next week for two EC members, to replace John Gonzalez and KHS, who has decided that he doesn't have time to be a full member. The secretary is trying to graduate and thus will not be able to be secretary or EC member as of 12 February. Mike Golding and Carl Hoffman were declared inactive. Greg Huber was declared inactive. Jay came in during the Chairman's Report. Office Report: The office is a pit. Try not to drip. The office has not been waxed in a long time. New things go in the front of the blackboard rejects file. RK lost his Parker pen in the office. Please look. Computer Services: As of today there were 761 users on the Student project. It looks like we will overrun the 900-person limit. Perhaps we ought to create another project, Student2 or something. This should cause a lot of administrative hair. Interim proposal is to create Student2 and register everybody on it starting 2 February. Passed. There is a Teach-Emacs file on Barmar's directory. The program to run it is >udd>SIPB>barmar>teache. BIM is working on text queues that will use alternate typefaces. Someone munged the SIPB mailing list. An extra close paren in .MAIL.;NAMES >. RK fixed. CAH sent a message from Phoenix Multics to MIT via internet over HASP. HASP worked that far, then broke and crashed Phoenix. User Interrupt: Charles Garrett, scrod from all directions in trying to get his thesis typed. There was no application and no motion to fund. He then applied for a Coop account. Taken. Telecommunications Report: The broken TTY 43 was called in. So was the Student Center left Teleray. The frequent freaking-out of the Student Center Telerays was discussed. Several thing were proposed, including tweaking them down to 1200 baud again. We will do more intensive diagnostics. When will we hold the Smoke-filled Room? Tuesday, 27 January, 1980 at 19:00. The PDP 11/10 works. Prof. Orszag donated an expansion box to the SIPB. Penny talked to somebody from Fenway House, which wants a terminal. She told him to get them to send us a letter. We should call them and remind them. Record terminal failures on TTRs. When terminals are called in, it should be recorded both on the TTR and in the Log Book. There was a short lecture about the Log Book. Publications Report: The structure of the SIPB's introductory documentation was discussed. There will be a special meeting to discuss this on Thursday 15 January at 15:00. Jay Pattin says that MS-1 is a very good introduction. People should probably read this before the documentation meeting. Someone or sometwo should pick up the NETS tomorrow. Penny got last week's NETS and NUMS from Beane. There are now lots. IAP Report: We need help at the Lisp Course lab sessions. There are lab sessions tomorrow at 15 and 19. What ever happened to the ASA's proposed IAP midway? Jay will check. People should please read the directions for the programming contest, on the blackboard, before taking contest applications. Other: Work is proceeding on the EECS Chaos gateway. So soon several new machines will be on the net. Eric Ostrom has eight or nine connectors, so cable connecting can start. Anyone who wants to help talk to RLL. Somewhere on Multics there should be a template for a thesis title page. It was suggested that the thesis queue be redirected to the Spinwriter, and the 1.25 inch margins be hacked correctly. Some random had rew access to the IAP PDT, where SIPBADMIN had only r access. Weird. As a matter of fact, Ashar (the person in question) has rew in the iacl to >udd>spba>spba>pmfs. The problem was traced to misuse of an abbrev while installing this guy. Be careful while using SIPBADMIN. Emacs works at Phoenix, under the new window system. If you divide the screen using the video system, Emacs will quite happily do all its stuff inside that window. GMP will ask Peter Kelley to give SIPB_print.Sysdaemon the no_bump attribute so that it doesn't get logged out for inactivity. Elections: David Kushner has been nominated for membership in the SIPB. He wants to be a member because he likes computering and peopling. He was elected unanimously (14). Congratulations. Applications: Alex Nacar wants $50 to use text editors. He has had $200 already on CMS. Given. Steve Hazlerig for the ACM programming contest team wants $75 to practice. Given. Cameron Dryden wants $50 to figure out piano fingerings. He has had $260 for homework. Given. Newton Loui wants $100 to learn PL/I and Lisp. To meeting because he is a member. Given. Kent Curtis for PKS fraternity wants $75 to type in fraternity by-laws. Given. Richard Clemenzi was voted $50 on JCF by EC vote. He knows JCF, and needs their graphics facilities. He has friends on JCF who can help him. This is the first time in a long time that we have tried to spend our money on the JCF. Sharon R. Shepard got $200 Coop. (Req.) But she wants to use the 370. She was added to Multics in confusion.
