Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 19 January, 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by Richard L. Lawhorn. In attendance were RLL, J9, JPT, HGA, GMP, ACW, Naha, BIM, Evan Williams, and a user. Late were: WMY, Alan, Barmar, DMK, JSL, DCP, RK, GHuber, c|, Jay, Steve, and NML. The minutes of the meeting of 12 January, 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. WMY, Alan, Barmar, DMK, JSL, DCP, RK, Steve, GHuber, and c| came in during the minutes. WMY took over the meeting. User Interrupt: Scott Mainwaring for the ESP wants $200 to do mailing labels. There was a long discussion centered on whether our strained budget should be spent on things like ESP. There was a motion to give. Given. Jay came in during the User Interrupt. User Interrupt: Chuck Brown for GAMIT wants money to do club administrative stuff. There was a motion to give $100. Given. User Interrupt: Whay C. Lee for the International Students Association wants to prepare a questionnaire. Motion to give $50. Given. NML came in at this point. GMP can keep hacking as long as it doesn't disrupt the meeting. Treasurer's Report: $5842.29 has been spent so far this month. Disk charges account for $1857. Student spending was $4000 of which disk charges account for 36%. There has been no cleanup of the Student project. The IAP project spent $535 of which 8% is storage. There are 120 users on IAP and more than 800 on Student. We are spending very rapidly. By extrapolating curves, it looks like we will overspend. Please try to be frugal. Again by extrapolation, we may have more than 1500 users by the end of the year. The question is, are we spending fast because we have lots of users spending a moderate amount, or is it because there are big spenders out there? There was a motion to move the auto limit back to $100. Passed. The phone bills are in. Pay your bill. Chairman's Report: There was a CCE meeting today. They talked about what they are going to talk about at future meetings. The IPC move, networking, etc. They talked about word processing. They are working on telling the Institute about the interim Multics alternative to a personal word processor. They talked about academic usage of computers and what other schools are doing. York talked a little about the "grass roots" approach, in which a lot of SIPB funded students become a force to be reckoned with, putting some pressure on professors to involve computers in their curricula. Shall we hold an EC election today or not? The notification was not mailed out in time. It was moved not to hold elections until next week. The Secretary was censured. Office Report: ACW and Penny are working on not having the floor waxed so often. The office is a mess. Penny did the new address lists. We have to have a key to the darkroom, because we keep essential things (Spinwriter ribbons) there. RLL is negotiating with Leo Ryan. BIM ordered more thimbles and ribbons. Maybe we will replace the tables under the loft with support that can be used as shelving. Office Game soon. The dataset works real well with the Teleray. The phone repairman came out and we looked silly. We need our Blue Box back. Naha will fetch. User Interrupt: Bill Hoffman for Technique wants $250 for keeping records and writing text parts of yearbook. Cut to $100 for budgetary reasons and given. It is understood that this is intended to carry them through this volume. Computer Services: Today Multics was slow because a CPU was out. If you don't know whether a person has a personid, use the ison command to find out. In this connection, Ashoke Goswami was given the wrong personid on IAP. He should have been Goswami, but was misregistered as AGoswami. You can use the rega command to register people with long names with aliases. It was moved and passed that we can auto initial Coop applications. Remember that you cannot auto Graft and Corruption on the 370. We just did a cleanup on >udd>sipb>pl>links, deleting all unresolvable links, punch_paper_tape among them. Telecommunications Report: Naha brought back the Blue Box. We have renewed all our terminal and dataset service contracts. The guards in the Student Center seem to be behaving properly with respect to our property in the Student Center Library. They call us when repairmen come, etc. We are still having problems with paper supply in the SCTR. Smoke filled room a week from tomorrow. Publications Report: There was a meeting of the SIPB Publications Junta. No final recommendations. Some general guidlines for future publications were arrived at. BIM suggests that we could buy a few copies of various central documentation that we could lend out for a limited time. BIM looks like he is in charge of the whole new documentation effort. He was voted $100 budget for building a lending library for users. Penny hacked up a letter for Oakland explaining what rights we retain to the Lisp Notes. The formerly missing page from the NETS is missing again: Barry made 50 copies which should be merged into the NETS. It was moved and passed to raise the price of the Lisp Notes back to $3. IAP Report: The Lisp Course is thinning out. Bawden will lecture next. The contest will have playoffs soon. Other: DMK called the ASA about the Spring Midway. They say it's going to be 1 February at around 7:30. The first we heard of it was an LSC slide. The ASA doesn't look too good in this. We may not be able to get phones in time. We are pissed. Plummer has hacked some weird tool up for running commands on MC from Multics. The secretary hasn't been doing too well at getting secretarial things done. He was censured. Spencer has an SX70 for snapping new members. Applications: GCO wants $100 to keep hacking Multics. Has had $300 already. Deferred until Gary comes to a meeting. Eric Reiner for the Debate Society wants $100 to store and maintain debate cases, briefs, etc. They have had $75. They have no budget. Given. (Richardson Edwards Pitman Kerns).SIPB was flushed. James S. Peters III wants to finish his thesis, involving a massive PL/I program on CMS. He ran out of the Sloan School's $300, and used about $600 of his own money. He wants about $75 to move his cruft to Multics and finish it. Given. Chi Phi wants $100 to do an alumni data base. Rejected out of hand. We will suggest Coop. W. Smith got $100 by EC vote for continuing to learn Pascal. He had already had $200. Sua-Der Suen got another $75 by auto. Is she an MIT student? Somebody will call the registrar and find out. Total appropriations: $5105 without Coop Autoed: $4330 Student: $4080. 370: $250 To Meeting: $775, all Student. No Coop. Other Other: Today was smokeless day at Hsing Hsing. Jim was outside on the sidewalk smoking. Toronto Trip the weekend of the 30th, 31st, and 1st. RK, Barmar, J9 went skiing yesterday. The Central Square Chinese restaurants are having no smoking days.
