Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 26 January, 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by William M. York. In attendance were J9, c|, Naha, DCP, ACW, RLL, BIM, Barmar, GMP, WMY, Steve and some users. Late were: GCO, DMK, RK, JSL, RDM, and JPT. User Interrupt: Mark Marinan for TEP wants $50, to revamp their phone billing system. Given. GCO and DMK came in during the user interrupt. Secretary's Report: The minutes of the meeting of 19 January 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. RK and JSL came in during the minutes. Treasurer's Report: BrayBlank lost another of our checks. "Went for a walk and didn't come back," said one teller. We had $230.34 interest on our account this year. Total spending so far this month is $8573.24, of which $890 was spent on the IAP project. The Student project has spent $5782, 13% disk charges. RDM came in during the treasurer's report. Chairman's Report: WMY is still writing the letter he is going to give to the CCE about what we do with our money and what we would do if we got twice as much for Christmas. He will continue to write. There will not be another CCE meeting for a few weeks. Office Report: The office is a mess. The 370 applications now have their own bin, on the bottom. The office has a working Vadic. Actually, the office has two Vadics but one is at York's house being "tested". Careful: the one in the office is wired in parallel with the dataset. Barry, DCP, and York have been working on the Office Game and it will be played soon. RLL has not yet talked to Leo about a darkroom key. User Interrupt: A. Marc O'Brien was warned for doing thesis on his Student account. BIM will call him, or try to when the phone system starts working again. Computer Services: The SIPB hierarchy backup took three tapes. The IAP start_up.ec got replaced by one which started with some of our stuff and trailed off into a bunch of curses. Somehow a lot of people had RW access to the startup. We have one box of thesis quality paper left. Be frugal. The names "pica_10" and "elite_12" replace the old "text" and "text_12". Also, the old "x stty" is no longer necessary: the terminal type will be set by magic when you change devices. For now, the 10/12 switch still has to be frobbed. GMP is looking into this. The Multics load has been consistently high. At 15:00 sometime last week there were 94 out of 95 units. The paperwork for the Student2 project has been done but the project has not yet been created. Somebody should tell Bobby to create the project. User Interrupt: James C. Ryan wants $40 to work on 21.542 term paper. Taken to meeting because it pushes him over the new auto limit. Given. User Interrupt: Richard E. Salz for Pi Lambda Phi wants $100 to develop a fraternity billing system. The fraternity will pick up the tab after the development is done. Given. Telecommunications Report: There was a terminal concentrator meeting at which RLL and DCP were the only attendees. They made a few preliminary design decisions. There is a Smoke Filled Room meeting tomorrow. NML looked at the Burton House Terminal Room. Awful. Gock all over the keyboard, dataset vandalised. Somebody should give their terminal chairman a call before tomorrow night's SFR meeting. We have broken Telerays. JPT came in during the telecommunications report. Elections: Eligible people for the two EC posts who did not withdraw their names were, with number of votes: DPC 0 CAH 3 WER 1 Steve 2 NML 0 Barmar 11 BIM 6 Jay 3 The new EC members are Barry Margolin and Benson Margulies. Publications Report: We need Lisp Notes Worksheets. Last Tuesday we got a call from Oakland University saying that they REALLY needed those Lisp Notes -- we finally got the master mailed off. Jim Davis of CISL has a runoff copy of the Moonual. After preparations are complete and Multics specific stuff is merged in, we will be able to debug it. And then we will be able to sell it. Penny ran off 50 more TTRs. IAP Report: IAP will end on Wednesday. The Spring Midway will be on Sunday. Show up at 12:45 at the office to participate. Clark Baker's people won the Programming Contest. They will get lots of Steve's Ice Cream. Tomorrow Bernie is going to lecture on Emacs to the Multics Course. Other: The SIPB directory on MC is getting bloated. Please GC your stuff. We are on MC on sufferance and should be careful not to make trouble there. New users should be put onto Student2 as of the first of February. Applications: Armand Gilbert was warned for doing letters on an account that he got for doing algorithms. Sua-Der Suen was warned for not being a member of the MIT community. For the Nth time, somebody called the registrar and gave them all possible names from (Sua-der Joyce) (Suen Yang). They have no record of her. RLL is checking into what she has on her hierarchy. Peter Haas wants more money ($200) to learn Emacs and work on a "second-year graduate paper". He has had $200. Deferred to a meeting at which Mr. Haas can be present. Felix S. Hsu wants $80 to learn Emacs and PL/I. Given. Canh V. Le wants some amount to do three-dimensional graphics on the JCF Vax. He wants that machine specifically because he knows how to use its graphics tools. Given $50. Steve LeBlanc wants $75 to continue hacking PL/I, FORTRAN, Lisp, papers, etc. Given. GCO wants $100 to continue hacking Multics. Amended to give $50, passed. Given $50. Scott Tonneslan wants $100 to edit a paper. Given Ronald C. Tyler wants $30 to do text processing and CS. Given. WMBR (human being's name unknown) wants $100 to do their weekly program logs and so on. Given. Sharon R. Shepard got $300 G&C on the 370. Michael K. Tamada had $100 added to his Coop account. User Interrupt: Sua-der Suen called to complain about being turned off. She was told to come to the office sometime. She says "I don't have an ID yet" and "I can't come to the meeting next week". We should not turn her on without seeing proof of studenthood. JSL went to a Science Fiction convention in Albany and got some funny buttons. Boskone is in three weeks.
