Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 2 February 1981 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by Allan C. Weschler In attendance were ACW, WER, BARMAR, GMP, HGA, DCP, CAH, JCG, J9, DMK, RDM, BIM, Katharine Marvin, Steve LeBlanc Late were: Naha, JIS, JSL, DPC User Interrupt: WMBR came to the office and gave us a report of their activities. They have been using their money for keeping the programming and operating logs. They have recently been doing fund raising, and have been storing thank you letters and names of people who have pledged money. User Interrupt: Tom Venman for the TCA wants $500 to rewrite last year's blood drive scheduling program. Motion to give was amended in friendly fashion to give $300. Living Group Interrupt: Alpha Delta Phi and WILG want to continue having a terminal, as they mention in a letter dated 2 February. They were not allocated a terminal at the Smoke Filled Room. Further discussion deferred until after the minutes. Minutes: The minutes of the meeting of 26 January 1981 were read and accepted as corrected. Back to the Living Group Interrupt: It was moved to scrap the old decision of the Smoke Filled Room and hold a new allocation meeting. Passed. The meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, 10 February, 1981. Treasurer's Report: The Finboard representative came to the meeting and inquired about our capital expenditure budget. We told him our whole sad story. He mentioned that ADB had money to allocate for capital expenditure, and that we should submit a proposal to Finboard. We should ask for $30K capital expenditure, $120K for computer budget of which $5K should be usable for printing publications. $9887.23 was spent last month on Multics, and $3056.44 on the 370. Total spending was $12943.67. Total year-to-date spending is $68846.87. We have $30K left to last 4 months. We have to start thinking about ways to save money, and about possible sources for additional funds when the crunch comes. BIM is meeting with the Provost this week, and perhaps aid can come from that direction. Also, there is a slim possibility that we could piggyback on the CISL/MIT buy-back agreement. All of these possibilities are being investigated. We are turning off the CMS accounts for the IAP courses as soon as we can get in touch with the instructors. JIS and JSL came in during the Treasurer's Report. Chairman's Report: Allan C. Wechsler and Ronald D. Mabbitt are graduating. Therefore, two slots on the EC and the office of Secretary will be left open. Elections will be held next week. Also, Ken Sinclair may be returning to the SIPB. Office Report: The office is full of cruft, especially the loft. The office game still looms. Still no key to the darkroom. There was a lecture on the requisition filling-out procedure. The computer-money account number is 90074. The lab-supplies number is 13608. The account for buying LA36 paper is SIPB. Look at previous wrecks for similar purchases if you are in doubt. Computer Services: The Student2 project exists. All new Student users should be registered on Student2. All the work has been done to make administrivia work on Student2. Remember that before adding anybody to Student2, you should check to see that they are not in either Student project. There are already about seven people on the Student2 project. The Student cleanup was finally done. The ldr_text command has been fixed to recognize all the new queue names. BIM has submitted requests to create queues for all the typefonts that we are likely to get. Don't delete the SIPB_registrar mail: it contains reminders to register new users on the Student2 project. The Honeywell employment agreement specifies that anything that Honeywell employees write belongs to Honeywell. This means that (under the strictest possible interpretation) things that CISL employees write for SIPB, are potentially Honeywell trade secrets. This doesn't mean that anything bad is about to happen, but we should be aware of the potential for moby lossage. CPU C is still down. Bad crashes have been happening. Telecommunications Report: Leave the Teleray connected to Multics by default. Something between the Spinwriter and the office dataset doesn't work. RLL will fix it this week. New House got a new dataset. Barry tried to call in the Burton terminal but DEC repair was busy. We should call Telecommunications Repair and get the loft phone receiver cable replaced: one of the connectors is broken. Publications Report: We are out of Emacs handouts. We are getting new Nums from Beane. We are (perhaps) getting low on Lisp Notes. IAP Report: IAP is over. Wednesday there will be a debriefing about our participation in the Center's IAP courses. The biggest problem was 370 registration. Barmar and Jay will write some guidelines about how to run IAP. Other: DCP is writing code for the terminal concentrator. The Spring Activities Midway happened. Sort of. There were very few people there. SIPB made a pretty poor showing, with only two or three members participating. Sua-Der Suen was turned back on when her husband came in and presented HIS student ID. Applications: The Chinese Student Club (David Chan) wants $125 for a total of $250. They will use the money for mailing lists. For budgetary reasons it was moved to give only $50. Given. DPC came in at this point. Elliot N. Berger wants $100 to write papers for 21.103J, 21.710, and 21.762. Given. Sua-Der Suen's husband came in and showed that he was a student, so we have turned her on again. It was moved to demand MIT student ID from all of our applicants. Failed. Charles Garrett wants $40 for writing a paper for Prof. Diamond in the Poli. Sci. department. Given. David Nash wants $50 for learning Emacs extensions. Given. Lebanese Students Club (Majjid Ibrahim) wants $60 to do mailing lists and mailings. Deferred until he can appear at a meeting. D. Gordon had $200 added to her Coop account. Ali Hanuwidjaja had $200 added to his Coop account. Arthur Mark O'Brien (who was warned for doing thesis) called to say it was just a thesis proposal. Timothy J. Appelt got $10 by EC vote to finish editing a paper to be attached to his resume. Total appropriations: without Coop Autoed: $1690, all Student EC Vote: $10, all Student To Meeting: $540, all Student. Coop: $400. Other Other: J9 is now a Dungeon Master: she won Zork.
