Minutes of the SIPB Meeting
		of March 11, 1985

	The meeting was called to order at 19:37 by PLJ.
	
In attendance were: BCN, DJB, WHBH, **Aya**, PLJ, Jim, Simsong, Lee, JTK,

		TREASURER'S REPORT

The list of how much people owe for shirts is on the blackboard.

	month-to-date student spending: 14,942.14
	year-to-date student spending: 216,077.75
	
          month-to-date sipb/sipbadmin spending: 2735.22
          year-to-date  sipb/sipbadmin spending: < 64,822.43

Our absolute spending limit this year is $240,000.  We can't give any more
undergraduate Multics accounts.  [JR walks in.]  We have to do something
very soon.  We have to lock up shift 1 somehow.  Either spending limits or
load control groups.  We should probably put a warning in now.  
Another area to cut spending in is disc storage.  We have gone back to June
1, 1984.  We could go back farther.
RF will write the warning message.  It will mention the March 19 Athena date.


                    ATHENA REPORT

Next Tuesday, every undergraduate student will be able to get an account.
The Athena Newsletter goofed and said each student will get 2500K, but they
will really only get 250K.  A Charon cleanup is being planned.  People who
belong in the Student Center should be moved off Charon.  It will be a
tricky process.  A copy of the etc password file should be made and people
should flag names, Simsong and BCN suggest.  After March 19, SIPB people
should be the only ones who have Charon as their primary machine, BCN adds.
Simsong proposes the following users: SIPB members, Athena consultants and
other Athena types, people writing software, and people who we like and who
will not keep the machine busy during the day.  JR defends our actions to
date: it has been a political win to give out Charon accounts.  

The question arises as to Chaosnet access.  Since most Athena machines will
never have Chaosnet access, should accounts on Charon be given out for this 
purpose?  Cliff has a neat program, but it needs to be more automatic.
JR proposes giving each person on Charon a SIPB sponsor.  We are trading
strict criteria for accountability.  RF will have a sorted list of people
with accounts posted by Wednesday night.  
						
		OFFICE REPORT and COMPUTER SERVICES

The office has been cleaned.  We aren't getting an IBM PC.  The Macintosh 
arrived on Tuesday.  We have to decide how we are going to announce it.  We
should discourage copying copywritten software.  The Mac will be used primarily
for downloading files to Athena.  Pat will write an info file.

		TELECOMMUNICATIONS REPORT

We sold our first terminal today to TC for $300.  [If we sell 100 terminals,
we can buy an island in the Bahamas.]  If fraternities call, Aya wants us
to ask for an MIT account number and a the serial number of their terminal
so we can make the transaction.  We are going to buy Athena modems and phone
lines soon.  But we need permission from Athena to hook them up.
