Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of April 29, 1985 The meeting was called to order at 19:43 by BCN and again at 19:45 by RF. In attendance were: Aya, Jim, Carla, RF, BG, BCN, JTK, WHBH, PLJ, DFM, JR, Tim, RRK, Amy, MW, Simsong, and five prospectives, George, Peter, Ken, Dave, and Irene. TREASURER'S REPORT If you take money out of the cash box, write it down. month-to-date student spending: 1,306.46 year-to-date student spending: 262,952.98 month-to-date sipb/sipbadmin spending: 464.79 year-to-date sipb/sipbadmin spending: <78,228.27 CHAIRMAN'S REPORT JR taught a course on using Scribe on Athena. RF is going to teach an RS1 course later this week. Now we are going to elect George and Ken, maybe. Ken is up for election first. Ken is working on a Multics Scribe server. George and Ken almost know how to take accounts. George wants to be a SIPB member so he can drink soda and hack the Mac. Ken is already involved with Multics and wants to get more involved. There are sixteen people voting. Ken is elected 16-0. George gets 9 Yes votes, but 7 people abstain. Peter is nominated. Dave Smith is nominated. George is renominated. Irene is nominated. Officer elections will be held next week. ATHENA REPORT Simsong thinks it would be really useful to have the Student Directory online on Athena. Athena has told us what to do with the modems. We will give them the money to use for buying eight modems for Ringworld. It will be about $4000. We are giving them money instead of actual modems because they won't be ready for modems until after this year's capital budget expires. RF told them that they can't sit on the money until next spring and they have to give back any leftover money. The modem installation is not official yet, but if it gets turned down, we'll get our money back. A motion is made, seconded, and approved on this issue. We will be spending the money. This leaves $3000 in this year's capital budget. This is not enough to buy a laser printer for the Mac, but we might be able send a proposal to Apple to get one for free. Therefore, we should think of other things to spend the $3000 on. OFFICE REPORT It's really nice to see a lot of people in the SIPB office these days. Don't leave half-empty or half-full soda cans in the office. SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT We ordered 15 cases of old Coke, some root beer, and some Tahitian Treat. The Slice has sold out. The dinner is at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Scotch 'n Sirloin on 77 Washington St. Please start paying your $15 if you are going. The glasses are arriving soon. Put your checks in the cash box and mark them off in the cash book. Tell Carla by tomorrow if you haven't picked your entree yet. COMPUTER SERVICES We have posters advertising our Macintosh file transfer service on top of the Spinwriter. Please help distribute them. TELECOMMUNICATIONS REPORT We have lots of prospective terminal buyers, but few actual buyers. We accidentally sold a Bell modem to MacGregor. We should replace it with a different one soon. PUBLICATIONS REPORT RF needs help getting the Underground Guide to Editing Text on Athena distributed. R/O REPORT We got some letters from the R/O Committee. We can either get mailing labels or something in the big package. We decided to get the mailing labels. Two people can come back early to help with R/O. Talk to BG if you're interested. OTHER There is no OTHER. OTHER OTHER Daniel Morgan's squash team lost. DFM won, however. Ask Aya about larceny by check. 2W and Friends are going to be in the All Tech Sing. See Aya for more details. Simsong found someone besides Spencer who can psychically influence metastable flip-flops. Jay was in town. NEW COKE TASTES LIKE PEPSI AND IS THE WORST THING THAT EVER HAPPENED TO THIS COUNTRY -- JR The meeting was adjourned at 20:59. Minutes taken and submitted by WHBH.
