In ancient Roman times, when the consulates were paraded through every year, there was a man who walked behind each, whispering in their ear, `Remember, you are only mortal.'" Simson will be staying at RF's house for SIGGRAPH and is really excited about it. He'll try to get RF in also (He's going on a press pass). ATHENA REPORT We decide that 9700 output is a good reason for extending multics, for the summer at least. Simson brought food (brownies/baklava) for the meeting. Every unix site on the network with ra81 has been experiencing problems with them. Simson has heard rumors that they are more prone to lossage on unix. Athena is about to bring on line 120+ PC/ATs running 3.0 DOS. Right now, they have a room about the size of the sipb office filled with documentation. (Good brownie, by the way.) New release is coming out. Simson is trying to get a copy of the changes for sipb. (user-visible and non user-visible) Simson makes a motion to put the SIPB phone number in the Athena terminal rooms. Bills talked to Cec about it, but right now isn't the proper time. Simson mentions, somewhat in jest, that we could send messages to every machine every day. Cliff says he would be mad. The Boston Lyric Opera calls for HGA. Yes, we did receive a brochure about next season. No we are not interested in subscribing for next season. Harold, if you're interested, give them a call. OFFICE REPORT The H19 is broken. Carla will call it in tomorrow. Meilin says, "There are orange chairs in the sipb office" She said she thought they were like boxes. Simson et al. put more cables on minits. Suggestions about how to get rid of the TRS-80. Loaning it out seems to be the best idea. (A user who wants to write ec's comes in.) Simson talks about an IBM kit. Cliff wouldn't trust his feet to a TRS-80 How to spend the Capital Budget.:$1600 pc kit? What happened to the CDs? After lots of long distance phone calls to Hitachi,... only 2 read/write CD things exist right now, and both are in research labs in Japan. But, Hitachi is really interested, and may someday give us stuff. Insert CD specs. here... If anyone wants to help simson out with the CD file system, you won't be paid ( but will be acknowledged) Brookhaven is interested in CDs 'cause they keep stuff about every protein solved by man, which would take up 1/50th of a cd??????? More on the build-your-own-PC kit... BG reads the ad ...this (a screwdriver and $1650 will buy you the PC you've always dreamed of....." "No soldering...half an hour" 8 megahz clock.. We'll (Carla/BG) walk the purch. order through in the morning. Cathy enters. SOCIAL COMMITTEE REPORT We got new soda. Also, the coke guy took the cans. COMPUTER SERVICES Nah. TELECOMMUNICATIONS REPORT Simson called OK. Aya had her network access revoked, because DEC Japan is facist. Sending mail to "aya@charon" will send mail to her, however. PUBLICATIONS REPORT R/O REPORT Computer tour: Simson will not handle the tour of E15. He will do a tour of archmac. Meilin says that she'll organize the computer tour. We punted W91 last year. Meilin says that Ken can do the W91 part. Simson has touched multics. Activities midway. We'd like to have the Mac, our to-be-built PC, and a terminal, if possible. Simson supplies (drugs) cough drops. IAP REPORT It's getting closer. We talk about LISP course. OTHER Cliff is giving his Unix course again for operators. Simson and Cliff talk about tcsh and stuff All perspectives in attendance were nominated for membership. OTHER OTHER Carla and Simson both got new phone machines. Simson's is amazing, it stamps the messages with the day and time, and he can retrieve them and change the outgoing message over the phone. But Carla's has a computer voice instead of a recording. Simson's has a computer voice too, but the average person will never hear it. Some guy from Argon National Labs called. Pat: If you touch the refrigerator door handle and the spinwriter metal now, you get a real shock now, not just a weird feeling The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 Minutes taken and submitted by Carla, with help from Simson. Any known corrections should be made public.
