Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of October 28, 1985


	The meeting was called to order at 19:40 by RF.
	
	In attendance were

	Treasurer's Report:

      Student Spending:  Month-to-date: 4,029.02
                         Year-to-date: 13,866.30

      SIPB/SIPBADMIN Spending:    MTD:  2,182.40
                                  YTD: 17,303.21

      There was a serious error in our billing.  We have only $3,000 in this
year's capital spending budget because the modems didn't get charged to last
year's budget.  Hopefully, Jim Bruce will be nice and give us some more money.

	Chairman's Report:

      The chairman spent 60 hours last week getting the 9700 stuff to work and
now it works!  
      RF went to the Athena allocation meeting and good things happened.
      RF notes that the SIPB is currently without a clear purpose.  People
just don't know what they're supposed to be doing in many cases.  Perhaps our
membership procedures should be changed.  People should think about this issue.

	Office Report:

      It is getting messy.  People should be ready to put stuff into the gray
cabinets as soon as the cruft has been removed from them.
      The LA36 that was in the office went to the Student Center and freed up
a chair.  It is still broken, though.

	Athena Report:

      The 9700 software has been installed.  Documentation is in the office.
Come in and read it.  Output costs 5 cents per printed side of the page.
Certain members (almost all of the actives) on the list by the blackboard can
approve refunds for Scribe failure.  They can also charge their output to the
SIPBADMIN project provided that they don't do this for their friends or make
it their sole SIPB-related activity.  Read the sipb athena notes file for
details.   
      There is a strong possibility that our rack was snarfed up by the
faculty modems.  If so, maybe there is room on it for our modems.
      Someone should investigate getting 258-SIPB as the number for
our Athena modems.  We will need to know all the details before approaching
Athena.

	Computer Services:

      The person who dumped out lots of his house's constitutions is beyond
our reach.  He never came to pick them up and his account has been turned off.
We should reinstitute the policy statement somehow.  We can probably throw the
constitutions out or we could airmail them postage due.

    	Telecommunications Report:

      There are one or two terminals in the Student Center that work.  The
rest are broken or attached to dead phone lines.
      The telecommunications department needs to be organized better, because
some things absolutely need to be done.  New members (and old) looking for a
purpose should consider helping Aya out with such tasks as moving terminals
around and taking care of the Student Center lossage.
      
	Publications Report:

      1000 one-page 9700 guides have been ordered.  500 five-page underground
guides have been ordered.  We will probably keep the underground guides in the
office and distribute the one-pagers to terminal rooms.

	R/O Report:

	IAP Report:

      BCN and RF have submitted their proposals.  Numerous bugs were
discovered in "iapform" during this process.  
      BCN's course is Tuesdays and Thursdays all through IAP in 36-372 from 
1 to 2 p.m.  It covers Unix internals and will allow more experimenting this
year, i.e., Cliff can divulge the root password to his students.
      RF needs people to make an MIT-specific version of Hack for his
tournament.  Put any suggestions in the hack notes file.

	Other:

      Kansas City won the World Series.
      Phys. ed. registration was too early in the morning as usual.
