Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 09/03/90 The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by amgreene. In attendance were Voting members: jcbourne amgreene bjaspan tytso leira jik amdehon web blubaron | jtidwell gamadrid tanis Associate members: eichin jtkohl raeburn dkk Non-voting members: Prospectives: fxzane anthony rasmith devon@ai heather(no username yet) | mjbauer Guests: kevles Rob_Durr@gatech Treasurer's Report: No report. CokeComm Report: We have Coke. Chairman's Report: Introductions all around. Office Report: Office is a pit. MouseComm: Smaller of the mice was found and escorted out of the building. We have so many chairs, that we should get rid of some of them. They clutter up the office. Discussion to continue on the list. Missing HowToGAMITs... please put books backs on shelves, etc. (This year's HTG was found...) Radio Shack catalog now on the shelf. bjaspan went through our bookshelf and found lots of old and useless docs. Hopefully, these can be recycled. SIPB should be getting a new doc rack from Athena soon. jtkohl discovered that there is no solder in the SIPB tool box. Also, he discovered some tools in one of the desks. He put them back in the tool box. Do we need to get/replace some of our tools? dkk will deal. Athena Report: New doc racks, or "reference sets", will be placed in clusters. 7.1 has really hit the clusters now. Frosh have hit Athena. Good number of frosh have already registered for accounts. Dot files seem to be OK... Volunteer consultants will be welcome during the coming weeks. Computer Services: ClariNet? tytso hasn't had time to deal. dkk now owns part of the TechInfo tree for lnf... does SIPB want one so we can create nodes... What to do with the X10 software in the SIPB locker? jik seems to think that no one is using the X10 stuff. Maybe we should move the software to an old directory and see if anyone complains. amgreene has failed to build TeX 3.0 for the SIPB locker... Athena has 3.0, SIPB doesn't. Maybe we should take out the SIPB executables. Since Athena now supports LaTeX, we could just take LaTeX out of the SIPB locker, but it should be a non-user-visible change for nothing. amgreene will deal. Since Athena is now charging for print-outs, can SIPB get an account to charge SIPB-related print-outs? There is a -a option now... send mail to accounts to find out... Also, how to deal with print-outs on the LaserWriter? Look into software to keep track of who uses the LaserWriter. amgreene will deal. Ronald-Ann Backup Report: jtkohl says that it was already done. dkk wonders if we can get cloning done for daily backups. Telecommunications Report: Ethernet problems between Talos/Cyrus and Bldg. 4 Volunteer consultants can now read the bug-dialup meeting. Publications Report: We're out of Iness. LaTeX. Also we're low on Using-Discuss and Iness. Guide. Volunteer to stock up? R/O Report: Midway is tomorrow. We need a powerstrip, extension cords. We should bring mips... the cube... the amiga. Can we get the mips for stand-alone? bjaspan is of the opinion that we can't. We have two have Athens drives... however, they are flaky... Maybe we could use charon... but discuss runs on charon... Why should we even bother bringing an Athena machine...? Why not just bring non-Athena machines? What do we do with the non-Athena machines? Much flamage about representing what SIPB is really like at the Midway. We should just be trying to attract people's attention so that we could tell people about SIPB. So... we'll bring the NeXT, the Amiga, docs... Volunteers to help man the booth? Tours: jtidwell is trying to arrange stuff... generally hard to get commitments. Devon@ai volunteers to be tour guide for the AI lab... dkk seems willing to be tour guide for the Media-Lab. W20-400 for stories with Jeff Schiller. Cray tour afterwards. Thursday 7pm at lobby 7. amgreene will deal with posters for the tours. Also entries for the Daily Confusion. IAP Report: October is IAP Planning Month. Other: They're here... Aaron Goodisman is one of the authors of a paper at Electronic Publishing '90. 3 RT's and 2 VS2000's in one outlet. Bad news. Clearinghouse is going relatively well... MicroComputer Center will have something on buying machines that can be Athena-ized on Wednesday. Other Other: gamadrid now lives at pika. Congrats! Today was a cold day for swimming. Saturday was "Be Kind to Editors" day. Anyone want a box that ran MS-DOS before IBM ever heard of it? jik found lots of old MIT bibles and such in his basement. Plus a 1979 HowToGAMIT. The meeting was adjourned at 20:30. Minutes taken and submitted by jcbourne.
