Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 10/1/90


	The meeting was called to order at 7:30:00 by amgreene.
	
	In attendance were

	Treasurer's Report:
		Treasurer is going to resign.  There are people
		willing to fill his spot.  He's going to resign,
		effective when we are able to hold an election to
		replace him.  If his replacement is an EC member,
		we'll have an election to replace the EC member.

<PUSH TO EC MEETING TO SET ELECTIONS FOR 15 OCTOBER>

		Election notice will be sent out.  We want to hold the
		election on October 15.

	CokeComm Report:
		Barr3y has all the information about BJ's.  We'll be
		starting to buy from them real soon now.  It'll cost
		us $25 a year to be a member, but we'll still save
		money.  (Since we should be able to punt the BayBanks
                account.)

	Chairman's Report:
		We don't have quorum.  We'll hold elections when we do
		have quorum.

		Should we hold one meeting earlier so fxzane doesn't have
		to be late to class?  Barr3y says it probably won't do
		much good.

		Should we deactivate more people so it's easier to get
		quorum?  Amgreene is reluctant but will look into it.

	Office Report:
		Office is a pit, but less of a pit since eichin and
		some others did some cleaning over the weekend.

		Byte magazine: Do we want to keep getting it?  Do we
		want them to waste shelf space with them?  Do we want
		to archive them somewhere less accessible?  Do we want
		to renew the subscription?

		We have to decide what archives in the office should
		be kept, and what can be thrown away.  E.g. the stuff
		in the file cabinets.  October 14 will be office
		purging day.  If you think you can help decide what we
		need to keep, then show up.  If there's something of
		yours in the office that might get thrown away, mark
		it beforehand.  (This applies to stuff that's been
		lying around in non-private drawers, shelves, etc.; and
		only marginally to open areas.)

	Athena Report:
		Emacs's are still hanging around.  Barr3y found a
		VS2000 with a load of 20 with emacs, ez and troff
		processes left over.  Wow.

		Possible related problems: emacs processes that won't
		die, even with kill -9.

		Why wasn't a reaper installed in the sipb locker?
		It's being worked on.  Ted will deal.

		Athena is in pieces.  Or, more specifically, much of
		the third floor is.

		Amgreene got mail from Athena saying, "You, too, can
		by an Athena workstation."  They have to be bought on
		MIT account numbers.

	Computer Services:
		Clarinet -- we're in garden wait, according to
		jtidwell.  Besides that, we're pretty much all set.

		Anything more about the PS/2?  Not yet.

		Suggestion from kevles (as quoted by bjaspan) -- we
		should get our VS2's replaced by VS2000's, while we
		still can.  We should also get a color head.

	Ronald-Ann Backup Report:
		Amgreene will take care of it.

	Telecommunications Report:
		Parts of the MIT campus spine are going to be replaced
		by 100 megabit FDDI routers.  The bandwidth will go up
		by an order of magnitude. Some of the routers have
		been put in place in e19 and e40 and are running.

		Soon, we'll be able to crash ten times faster.

		1200-baud problem, and the "CONNECT 2400" problem.
		Amgreene thinks they may be the same problem, and has
		suggested this to bug-pad.

	Publications Report:
		Fxzane has offered to get copies of whatever we need.
		We need everything.  Did warlord get copies like he
		said he was going to?  Bjaspan is checking the
		requisition pad in the treasurer's drawer.  The result
		is apparently in the negative.

		Qjb has picked up his bled-on copy of Inessential AFS,
		and will prepare the next release.

	R/O Report:

	IAP Report:
		October is IAP planning month.

		Amgreene volunteers to run some form of TeX class.

		Any interest in a C++ class?  Some interest is
		expressed.  Bjaspan might be interested in teaching
		it, but nothing definite.  Mcharity might be able to
		help with this too.  Eichin would be good, if we can
		get him.

		Qjb is interested in a gwm class, but isn't
		volunteering to teach it, at least not definitely.

		Perhaps a perl class?  Marc might be able to do
		something with this, but no commitments.

		Whatever happened to the mini-minicourses?  Well, we
		should do more, but no one jumps up to volunteer to
		organize them.

	Other:

		Chairman is sick.

		Jay has an acquaintance who wants to be shown around
		the media lab.  Lward says he can help.
