Minutes of the SIPB Meeting of 01/23/95


	The meeting was called to order at 19:30 by sorokin.

	In attendance were

	Treasurer's Report:

		She's not here.  sorokin: Jane Trull wants the blue
		copy of the req forms, the thing we keep keeping in
		the req books.  ghudson: That's the copy WE get to
		keep, I thought... sorokin: Jane Trull wants the blue
		copy of the req forms.  abbe keeps saying she'll deal
		with this one of these days.  abbe walks in.  sorokin:
		You need to talk to Jane and find out what she wants
		and deal.  sgw: Speaking from experience as a former
		MIT employee, lots of people think it's their right to
		have the blue copy, but they're wrong... but they'll
		be happy with photocopies of them...  sorokin: Move to
		allocate $20 for abbe to copy shit for Jane.  uhh, I
		can't.  abbe makes the same motion.  Seconded,
		white-balloted.

		jered: I have the invoice for the memory for lola and
		limekiller, do I have to bring it up here?  no, it's
		already been approved.

	Chairman's Report:

	Office Report:

		mwhitson: the office is getting clean.  sorokin: clean
		the office, get stuff off the floor, make a path for
		fastcart, and get the private computers
		out of the office.  jweiss will send mail on the
		private computers in the office (mainly the C64's).

		hartmans: I mentioned this on some SIPB list, and
		basically if no one has any objections, as soon as a
		new install image is made, I'd like to subject
		pickled-herring to AIX 3.2.5, which is fairly stable
		and stuff.  sorokin: Any objections to this?  no
		objections.  do it.

		mhpower: Just a tip: if you happen to be called out of
		the office into the cluster to halt a user's
		workstation, make sure private mail's not showing on
		the workstation.

		jered: limekiller has a dandelion-patch srvtab.  

		jweiss: People should help clean the office before the
		carpet thingie tonight.  I don't want to be cleaning
		this up alone.

		jweiss: The old dead exabyte drive is decommissioned
		from its MIT property tag thingie, and sgw will take
		it out of here now.

		rjbarbal: a book magically appeared in my drawer over
		the past few days.  Just because it has a tea bag
		thingie for a bookmark doesn't mean it's his.

		jhawk: Some user brought in a 5.25" disk and wanted to
		read it.  Only the RT's were able to read them.
		yandros: Speaking of the RT's... jweiss: We're using
		AFS now.  We don't want RVD servers in the office.
		yandros: I'd like to suggest we stick the RT's under
		the table and use them.  jweiss: The two RT's are
		snork-like large floor model RT's that only have a tty
		console.  hartmans: jhawk brought up an interesting
		point, that RVD doesn't lose when AFS dies.  sorokin:
		Offline.  ghudson: Some people may object to the
		space, we should discuss it now. yandros: if you put
		this offline I'll take them into the office and if
		someone else objects i'll take it out.  ghudson: We
		don't have enough space, I don't think; it'll detract
		from the small amount of space we do have.  yandros
		(for the second time): How about I take responsibility
		for moving them into the office and if people want
		them out, I'll take them out.  srz: I can barely hear
		Chad because of the snork noise as it is now.  I think
		the RT's have outlived their usefulness.  I'd almost
		be willing to get rid of snork right now because of
		this issue.  jcb: I have a little problem with Chad's
		suggestion, it sounds like what he's trying to do is
		railroad the SIPB into getting them in here.  Straw
		poll is held.  It's slightly in favor of taking them
		in.  more blather.  Do we need to discuss this more?
		No, Chad will deal.  We can put the RT's and the C64's
		in Chad's bed if he doesn't deal with getting them
		out.  svalente: How about a real vote instead?  vote:
		15-8-(3+sgw), we're bringing them in.

		jered: We're supposedly going to get a SS5 and a SGI,
		where are we going to put these? we're not going to
		discuss this here, let's be real.

	MIT Computing Report:

		jhawk: Saturday, dkk killed moira and it's been down
		since then until some time this afternoon.

		sorokin complains a little incoherently about people
		saying a lot of random stuff about minor athena
		outages. srz: Ask yourself, is this something a member
		should know about? The fact that Moira was down on
		Saturday is something we don't need to know. If AFS
		goes down and keeps going down, that's something we
		should know. Think about that before you say something
		like this. sorokin: yes, that's what I meant.

	Computer Services:

		ghudson: We have a 4G disk that was manufactured by
		Micropolis; it has lots of errors.  We're supposed to
		have a 48-hour replacement time, but in fact it'll be
		at least tomorrow before we get our swap disk. I'll
		talk to them about this.  We should be getting 12G of
		disks in the mail this week because our news disks are
		coming too. .  tlyu: A number of volumes had problems
		when I tried to move them off the bad disk.
		project.{tex,butler},
		user.{mwhitson,aaron,...}... others.  djib: Are the
		new disks Micropolis or Seagate?  ghudson: yes.
		jweiss: yes. (in more words than Greg said) ghudson:
		Matt recommended we cancel the news disk order from
		R-Squared because of this, I disagreed because
		Tribeca's replacement policy is comparable.  we're
		staying with what we planned. 

		mhpower: About 30 years ago in 1965 there was a
		movement... uhh... blah blah blah.  Cultural
		Revolution?  What the hell is he talking about?  I
		don't know.  sorokin: Can you explain why you said
		that?  mhpower: I'd rather someone else follow up.

		yandros: The SIPB locker didn't respond so well when
		the SIPB cell went down, and the athena copy sucked,
		because it had a mountpoint into the sipb cell for the
		sun binaries, not actual copies of the programs.

		mhpower: RTFM is overloaded with mail from amigas at
		the University of Winsconsin in Madison. The SIPB will
		be opening talks with the State of WI soon. sorokin:
		why didn't you tell me this earlier? I was just there!

	SIPB Backup Report:

		ghudson: it may be difficult to do the backup early
		this week because we're moving a lot of things around.
		Oh, I forgot to mention we added a 1G disk to rosebud.

		jweiss: I'm doing machine backups since afs isn't
		being backed up.  Someone who knows how to deal should
		deal with anxiety-closet. 

		proven: For those of us with homedirs in the sipb
		cell, will you be backing stuff up before you transfer
		to another disk?  tlyu: Well, I'm barely keeping ahead
		of the read errors.  proven: well, offline.

		jweiss: We have a cleaning tape that looks about half
		used; in a little over the month, we'll be out.
		jweiss: Up to $50 to buy a cleaning tape?  sorokin:
		Wanna do it?  Money is seconded, white-balloted.
		yandros will deal.

	Publications Report:

		We don't seem to be low on these paper things.

		ghudson: Copies of netbsd-athena may be at graphic
		arts...  uhh...  Well, it's here somewhere.

		jtkohl: NetBSD class is happening.  ghudson: The first
		day went pretty well, we had about 20 people.  

		proven: The Threads class went well.

		nygren: Intro to Unix Development went well.

		we taught some classes and it was okay.

	CokeComm Report:

		gamadrid: people owe me lots of money.  The coke debt
		is close to an all-time high.  Your service will be
		lousy until I get money.  Leave a check in the can if
		I'm not here.

	Other:

		ghudson: use readcomics.  It's in outland.

		marc: The CERT said rhost is insecure today, but we
		already knew that. They referenced papers from 1989
		and 1985.

		jtkohl: Usenix was cool, and Derek presented.  proven:
		Usenix was fun.  You should all have been there.

		yandros: rav_eaters at Mary Chung's happened tonight,
		there were 23 people, and we sat at all the tables but
		one.

	Other Other:

		fastcart: says hi again.  sorokin: We should still
		clean up the office.

		sgw: Just for the record, proven has a much lower
		alcohol tolerance than I do.

		missing tonight's.  

		mhpower: I got some random email from someone in
		Ankara, Turkey...

		Great lineup.  Show up at 6 on Saturday for Blade

		gamadrid: Let's all say all our random stuff at the
		same time.  It'll sound really cool.

		sorokin: I saw Das Boot, and it was cool.  Great movie
		to see when you're in a bad mood, since when it's over
		you're still in a bad mood but you can't remember what
		you were originally in a bad mood about. you just sit
		there staring at the screen and going "[expletive
		removed from minutes]"

		cordelia: My birthday is in three days, but I'm still
		trustworthy for seven years.
